Xinchang County Gazetteer states: Xing Zengjie studied Confucian classics in his youth but did not succeed in the examinations. He then mastered various medical texts including Suwen, Neijing, Danxi, and Dongyuan. His prescriptions were invariably effective immediately. For dangerous conditions and unusual yet effective formulas, he wrote several volumes of Yi'an Xinfa. He also authored Bencao Jiyao, Shanghan Zhizhang Xiangjie, and Maijue Shanbu, serving as a guide for practitioners of Huangdi and Qibo's arts. His character was mild and indifferent to gifts. He was particularly skilled in Dao Yin (guiding and pulling exercises). Essentially, he used health preservation methods to save people, possessing the art of a benevolent person.
[Wu Shi (Wenxian) Yaoxing Biaoben] Ten volumes. Not seen.
Wuyuan County Gazetteer states: Wu Wenxian, courtesy name Sanshi, was from Huaqiao. From childhood, he favored the arts of Qibo and Huangdi. After becoming a county student, he still did not abandon medical books. Over time, he said, "If an ancient person cannot become a good chancellor, they should become a good physician." He finally resigned from his doctoral status and devoted himself to the medical works of a hundred schools and books like Suwen. His works include Sanshi Yijiao forty volumes and Yaoxing Biaoben ten volumes. Prefaces were written by Hong Shiyu Jueshan and Yu Situ Zhongyu.
[Mei Shi (Deyuan) Yaoxing Huiyuan] Three volumes. Extant.
Chen Xingxue's preface excerpt says: In the spring months, due to prison clearance duties, I traveled between Yuan, Luxi, Chen, and Xu. I met Mei Yuanshi from Pingxi, who held his compiled Yaoxing Huiyuan three volumes, and presented it to me at the boat station. Upon completion, I found the language concise yet detailed, principles simple yet clear, directions practical and rigorous. Categories are divided by section, formulas distinguished by origin, properties and flavors differentiated by grade. Harmonized by Yin and Yang, distinguished by meridians, assisted by Water and Fire, referenced by Sovereign, Minister, Assistant, and Courier roles, accompanied by incompatibilities and contraindications. Analyzing verification in formula application, recognizing success from prior trials. There is no need to consult ancient texts far away or search near-side sects; simply searching by category is like holding a left half of a tally. It is perhaps a mirror for the heart, a compass to distinguish clarity from obscurity. The miraculous nature of Zhouhou Beiji Fang is cherished to this day; how can this be kept secret? Thus, it was given to Zhou Nan Wang Jun, Inspector of Quyang, to print and disseminate. Yuanshi's talent was sharp as a knife, his discourse fluent as a hanging river, but due to ill fortune, he only attained a military staff position. Upon arriving at the office, a severe drought and epidemic struck Pingxi. He distributed medicine to save them, saving countless lives. In the year Jiawu, he served in the examination hall. A Liu Sili assigned to test candidates was critically ill, with faint breath nearing death. Physicians retreated in fear. Yuanshi arranged the formula and administered the dose, bringing him back from death. The effect was swift as an echo. Within ten days, he recovered completely. This is indeed the miracle of the physician and the medicine, but truly the miracle lies in the book's ability to distinguish drug properties.

General Rules state: This book first respects Shennong's Benjing, then records Tao Hongjing's Bie Lu, then Tang Ben, Tang Xinding Bencao, then Zhen Quan's Yaoxing Bencao, then Sun Simiao's Qianjin Shizhi, then Chen Cangqi's Bencao Shiyi, then Meng Chang's Bencao, then Song Kaibao Bencao, then Song Jiayou Bencao, then Rihua Bencao, then Dongyuan's Yong Yao Fa Xiang, then Danxi's Yan Yi Bu Yi, up to Huibian Mengquan, and old editions from Yuan and Ming, totaling no less than forty types. Finally, Li Binhu's Bencao Gangmu, which is twice as extensive as predecessors. However, the book includes both together, having already done the work of distinction. Later experts' confirmed theories often repeat. Zhumo further screened, collected, supplemented, and revised, deleting complexity and redundancy, naming it Huiyan, aiming for accuracy and purity. While Bencao books are profound and broad, historical examination shows that some claims are disputed by ancients and moderns. Thus, the subtlety of drug use cannot be rigid; differentiation is necessary. Zhumo collected past famous sayings to avoid omissions. He also traveled provinces, visiting markets, hidden valleys, and elders, seeking knowledge, collecting previously unknown and recently verified content, verifying and recording one by one. Compared to Li's original, there are slight additions and deletions, provided for national physicians to select from, offering great benefit. Regarding formula collection, only those with ancient textual basis and contemporary verification are trusted. Each discussion and formula notes the surname and source, published for the world, fearing textual errors might mislead others, so it was carefully collated. Side notes reveal painstaking effort. Deleting redundancy is self-evident. Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs to determine drugs, hence the name Bencao. The intent was to prioritize herbs, followed by fruits, trees, minerals, birds, and fish. Thus, the collection lists herb sections first. However, drugs are taken to treat diseases effectively. Alchemists claim they can be used for furnaces and ingestion. As sages Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan stated, taking Zhuru and Golden Pills causes harm, involving more than one person. Down to Pishi transforming phlegm heat, Shengqi nourishing brain marrow, all absurd talk leads to premature death if believed. All such are excluded to uphold correct arts and refute heresies.
Zhejiang Tongzhi states: Ni Zhumo, courtesy name Chunfu, was silent and fond of antiquity in his youth. He mastered the teachings of Tongjun and Qibo, achieving miraculous effects in treating diseases. Many sought him out; if refused, they complained. Zhumo thus collected历代 Bencao books, searching extensively, resolving doubts, correcting errors, with extremely detailed verification, naming it Bencao Huiyan. His son Zhu Long printed and circulated it. The world says Li's Bencao Gangmu is detailed, while this book captures the essence, making them comparable.
[Gu Shi (Fengbo) Fenbu Bencao Miaoyong] Ten volumes. Extant.
Self-preface says: I have heard that using medicine is like using troops. Reading military books, I know terrain and water/land differ. Skills vary. Southerners are accustomed to naval warfare, Northerners to land warfare. Mountains suit steepness, borders suit deserts. Some excel in swords/spears, bows/arrows, halberds/shields, fire attacks, chariot warfare. Driving land troops to water would drown them first. Driving plain troops to danger would endanger them on eggshells. Switching bows to spears makes handling difficult. Switching chariots to fire leads to self-entrapment. Heaven's timing and earth's advantage must not be violated; enemy strength and weakness must be assessed early. This is adapting to times. Reading medical books, I know using medicine is similar. Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, Kidney are drug natures, each entering its organ. Cold, Warm, Tonify, Drain, Neutral are drug functions, each showing efficacy. Wrong meridian guidance reverses generation/restriction; wrong tonification/draining worsens symptoms. Changes in Yin/Yang Qi movement, differences in five regions' dryness/humidity, varying exterior/interior deficiency/excess, different Wind/Cold/Summerheat/Dampness syndromes, should adapt to heaven's timing and human affairs, responding magically. Grasping the mechanism appropriately targets the aperture, revealing drug spirit and wonder, akin to Yafu and Wumu's armies, unfathomable. Thus, I divide Bencao into five organs, like five army divisions. Meridian-mixed drugs are like versatile commanders. Classifying cold/warm/tonify/drain is like armies excelling in specific strengths. Listed clearly before, orderly. Waiting for those who understand nature and function to achieve effects, like royal troops obeying generals. Applying Yin/Yang/Five Elements to herbs/minerals requires knowing the general's insight into Nine Heavens/Nine Earths, manipulating like a god. Alas, in my era, where are physicians like Chisongzi or Wolong? I do not claim ability, but wish to learn. Gengwu Year of Chongzhen, First Yang Day, Gu Wu Youqi Sanren Gu Fengbo Junshengfu inscribed at Zhanyu Studio.
[Li Shi (Zhongzi) Bencao Tongyuan] Two volumes. Extant.
[Leigong Paozhi Yaoxingjie] Six volumes. Extant.
Siku Quanshu Tiya states: Leigong Paozhi Yaoxingjie six volumes, old title attributed to Ming Li Zhongzi. Metal/Stone section 33 kinds, Fruit section 18 kinds, Grain section 11 kinds, Herb section 96 kinds, Wood section 57 kinds, Human section 10 kinds, Bird/Beast section 18 kinds, Insect/Fish section 26 kinds. Below each substance, there are discussions/cases. Calling it Leigong likely extracts text from Paozhi Lun, attached at the end. Examining Song Lei Xiao's Paozhi Lun three volumes, since Yuan, no exclusive edition exists. Only Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu records it somewhat in detail. This book's collection is incomplete, so it cannot claim Leigong's name. Jiangsu Tongzhi records Zhongzi's works: Shanghan Kuoyao, Neijing Zhiyao, Bencao Tongyuan, Yizhong Bidu, Yisheng Weilun, five types total,唯独 missing this book. The front page has Taiyiyuan correction and Gusu Wenxitang printing supplements, a vulgar shop habit, likely assembled by ignorant booksellers borrowing Zhongzi's fame.

[Zhang Shi (Guangdou) Zengbu Yaoxing Leigong Paozhi] Eight volumes. Extant.
[Lu Shi (Zhiyi) Bencao Chengya Banji] Ten volumes. Not seen.
Hang Shijun's Biography of Famous Physician Lu Zhiyi states: Zhiyi, courtesy name Yousheng, during Ming Xizong's reign, styled Jingong, also called Luzhongren. Father Lu Fu, courtesy name Buyuan, was skilled in medical theory, with many students. When father Lu Fu wrote Gangmu Boyi, he had doubts about Pepper and Chrysanthemum being equally excellent, unable to decide. Zhiyi's private comments resolved it, so he was asked to judge medicines face-to-face, all containing profound truth. When seriously ill, he urged Zhiyi to complete it. After eighteen years, Bencao Chengya emerged. The part prefixed with the late father's name is Boyi. Divided into Review, Reference, Extension, Judgment four aspects. Books scattered after turmoil; Reference and Review slightly supplemented, Extension and Judgment doubled, memory lost, hence named Chengya Banji. Twelve volumes total, now circulating. After father's death, describing late father's will, he completed Mosuo Jingui nine volumes. Right eye blind, Mosuo means finding in darkness. Following Mosuo are Shanghan Jingui Chao, Yi Nan Xi Yi, citing examples, nearly 300,000 words. Refuting Bian Que, mocking Hua Tuo, twisting Wang Shuhe, refuting Cheng Wuji, criticizing Sun Simiao and below. Using Ling Su's Re Bing to discuss sudden illness is erroneous; identifying Seven Emotions/Six Qi, sexual excess/knife wounds as internal/external three causes is erroneous; limiting disease duration by skin/muscle/stomach layers is erroneous; taking Transformation Qi as root and Meridians as branch is erroneous. Profound and complex, understood through reason, enlightened by Zen. Returned to Fujian, resumed old career, accumulating thirty years to complete. Old history says: Chen Zeng commented on Zhiyi: In year Bingxu, the Regent was in Shanyin. Zhiyi visited with a cane, greatly trusted, appointed Director of Personnel. Plot failed, he fled home, mingled with old acquaintances, household chaotic, whereabouts unpredictable. Character aloof, though rising through medicine, neglected peers, proud, rode carriages with attendants, gestured and spoke freely in crowds. Scholars predicted disaster. Soon both eyes went blind, gradually became invalid, stayed indoors, cut off contacts, sighed alone, died of frustration. This may be Heaven preserving him. (Daogu Tang Wenji) Siku Quanshu Tiya states: Bencao Chengya Banji ten volumes, Ming Lu Zhiyi. Theory: Shennong Benjing 365 kinds correspond to celestial degrees, no removal/addition needed. But 1/3 are ancient but extinct. Taking 222 from Benjing, plus 143 from Tao Hongjing to Li Shizhen, totals 365, somewhat forced. Yet research is comprehensive, arguments clear. Selection strict. Though verbose, beneficial to Bencao. Chengya means four numbers multiply; initial examples have Review, Reference, Extension, Judgment. Four items per drug, hence Cheng. Banji means late Ming war lost drafts, Zhiyi reconstructed from memory, not complete original, hence Ban. Name is obscure. Case: Hang Shijun's biography says father Lu Fu wrote Gangmu Boyi, doubted Pepper/Chrysanthemum, Zhiyi resolved it, judged medicines, had truth. Urged to complete, took 18 years. Book continues father's work. This version is 10 volumes, biography says 12, reason unknown.
[Lu Shi (Zhongde) Bencao Bacui] Not seen.
Qian Qianyi's preface says: Medical classics and formulas were perfected by Hejian and Dongyuan. Early Qing physicians had lineages, but Bencao was nearly lost. My friend Miao Zhongchan sighed, saying Qin fire burned Three Fens, leaving only Suwen and Bencao. Bencao's main text comes from Huangdi and Qibo, sages matching heaven/earth, classifying things, exploring nature, entering spirit, changing things. Modern learners just use it for decoctions, superficially studying, never deeply researching. Since Tang/Song, additions to ancient Bie Lu, refutations in modern Gangmu, learners ignore origins, leading to bad medicine, false formulas, killing with stones, starting here. He wrote commentary to fix this, organizing errors like historical records, clear rules. Spanning 500 years, revealing hidden secrets of Xuanqi, only Zhongchan. Zhongchan suffered illness young, traveled much, always researched drugs with pen/knife, 50 years to complete. 20+ years after his death, son Lu Zhongde read Miao's book, learned his learning, wrote Bencao Bacui to clarify essentials. How hard! Zhongchan was agile, magnificent, studied with Zi Bo Laoren, mastered Buddhism, did medicine as spare time to save world. I saw him resolve strange diseases, deep thinking like Zen, waking refreshed, rolling sleeves, prescribing, fingers moving fast. Dangerous like Duke Huan cutting Guzhu, wondrous like Di Qing crossing Kunlun, cautious like Zhao Chongguo's Jincheng strategy. Shallow people hear rumors, mouth agape, let alone discuss/read/love/transmit. Thinking of Zhongchan's words, sighing no Ziyun later, seeing Zhongde means Zhongchan lives. Glad to write preface, guiding his will, starting with Zhongchan. Zhongde loves learning, reflects, improves virtue daily. Though old, I can narrate top doctors healing nations, like Sima Qian writing Bian Que/Cang Gong, writing this to wait. (Youxue Ji)

[Shen Shi (Mu) Bencao Dongquan] Twenty volumes. Extant.
Self-preface excerpt says: I read Qiyang Li's Gangmu, precise and comprehensive, admired its perfection. Extracted essences, gathered famous experts' works, added classics/history/unofficial histories, related subtle meanings, compiled into one volume. Shunzhi Xin Chui month, Wu Xing Shen Mu, Shipao Shi wrote.
[Zhang Shi (Zhicong) Bencao Chongyuan] Three volumes. Extant.
Self-preface says: Shennong Bencao, called Benjing, counts 365 kinds, corresponding to celestial degrees. Top grade 125 kinds as Sovereign, non-toxic, long-term use, nourishes life, extends years, boosts Qi, lightens body, immortality. Middle grade 120 kinds as Minister, toxic or non-toxic, regulates blood/Qi, expels evil, treats disease. Bottom grade 120 kinds as Assistant/Courier, toxic/non-toxic/severe toxic, removes cold/heat/evil, breaks accumulations, stops when disease cured. Heaven/Earth opened, plants born. Nong Huang observed Six Qi of Heaven, Five Elements of Earth. Six Qi: Jueyin, Shaoyin, Taiyin, Shaoyang, Yangming, Taiyang, Three Yin Three Yang. Five Elements: Shen/Si transport Earth, Yi/Geng transport Metal, Bing/Xin transport Water, Ding/Ren transport Wood, Wu/Gui transport Fire, Five Movements Five Elements. Based on Five Movements/Six Qi principles, distinguishing herb/mineral/insect/fish/bird/beast natures, combining with human Five Zang/Six Fu/Twelve Meridians, having cold/warm/rise/descend/tonify/drain treatments. Heaven/Earth things do not exceed Five Elements. Origin: Five Directions East/South/West/North/Central. Growth: Five Times Spring/Summer/Long Summer/Autumn/Winter. Form: Five Colors Green/Yellow/Red/White/Black. Qi: Five Smells Musk/Burnt/Fragrant/Fishy/Rotten. Substance: Five Flavors Sour/Bitter/Sweet/Pungent/Salty. Recorded as drug properties, opening things, accomplishing tasks, passing to posterity. Language ancient, meaning deep, hard to fathom. Later compilers of drug properties did not understand Benjing, only saying "Drug X treats Disease Y," not exploring origin, only treatment. This is drug usage, not drug nature. Knowing nature and using it gives foundation, divine change without limit. Copying usage without foundation leads to obstruction. Thus I interpret Benjing, clarify drug nature, root in Five Movements/Six Qi.
