The Spleen opens into the mouth. If one consumes rich and heavy flavors, then the Spleen Qi (Spleen energy) becomes stagnant. Coupled with excessive disturbance from the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensiveness, Sadness, Fear, Fright), the Heart Fire (Heart heat pathogen) flares up intensely, resulting in the formation of Mouth Ulcers (oral sores).
Generally, there are two types: Excess Heat and Deficiency Heat. A pulse that is Surging (Hong) and Rapid (Shu) indicates Excess Heat. A pulse that is Surging but Empty and Floating, accompanied by insufficient Middle Qi (Middle Jiao energy), indicates Deficiency Heat. Furthermore, tastes in the mouth may vary—Bitter, Sweet, Sour, Pungent, Salty, Bland, or Astringent—and these must be carefully differentiated.
A bitter taste accompanied by sores indicates Heart Heat. A bitter taste arising from indecisive planning or worry indicates Gallbladder Heat. A sweet taste indicates Spleen Heat. A sour taste indicates Liver Heat; however, it can also result from food stagnation. A pungent taste indicates Lung Heat. A salty taste indicates Kidney Heat. A bland taste indicates Spleen Deficiency. A sticky/musty taste indicates Heat transferring from the Bladder to the Small Intestine. Bad breath (Halitosis) results from accumulated heat harbored in the Chest and Diaphragm, rushing upwards to the mouth. Additionally, if foreign filaments enter the mouth, treatment varies accordingly.
