(The formula is seen in the preceding text.)
Within seven days postpartum, if one accidentally contracts wind-cold, presenting with nasal congestion, cough, and a heavy voice, add Xingren (Apricot Seed), Suzi (Perilla Fruit), and Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel) to Shenghua Tang (Invigorating Blood Decoction) to promote qi circulation and resolve phlegm. Do not use diaphoretic methods for releasing the exterior, and strictly avoid cold-natured medicines.
The *Neijing* states: "When the body is shaken and labored over, sweat issues from the Spleen; when startled and essence is depleted, sweat issues from the Heart; when fear arises, sweat issues from the Liver." Postpartum, labor injures the Spleen, startling injures the Heart, and fear injures the Liver. Consequently, symptoms of palpitations and spontaneous sweating are common. However, if abdominal pain due to blood stasis masses has not yet subsided, Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) should not be used hastily. Add Chao Zaoren (Stir-fried Ziziphus Seed) two qian to Shenghua Tang. If there are palpitations with a sense of insecurity, sweating, and a sallow or lost complexion, this indicates Yang collapse due to excessive sweating. In this case, one must adapt by doubling the dose of Renshen (Ginseng Root) in Shenghua Tang to rescue the critical condition. If sweating continues after taking the medicine, treat with Tiaowei Shen Tang (Regulating Stomach Ginseng Decoction); it may save four or five out of ten patients.
Renshen (Ginseng Root) (3 qian), Huangqi (Astragalus Root) (Raw, 2 qian), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (2 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (4 fen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (3 fen), Mahuanggen (Ephedra Root) (Ephedra induces sweating, its root stops sweating; use the root, 5 fen).
Add one black date to the above herbs. Use one and a half cups of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain. Take warm after meals.
For thirst, add Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) 1.5 qian and Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry) 9 grains. For phlegm, add Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Grandis) 4 fen. For collapse with cold extremities, add Shu Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) 5 fen, Heijiang (Black Ginger) 4 fen, and Muli (Oyster Shell) 1 qian.
Sweating during sleep that stops upon waking is called night sweats, belonging to Yin deficiency. However, one should not rely solely on Yin-nourishing medicines. It is advisable to concurrently administer Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Huangqi (Astragalus Root), so that abundant Qi generates Yin, yielding effects as swift as shadows and echoes. Administer Musan San (Oyster Powder) mixed with Shenghua Tang (Invigorating Blood Decoction).
Muli (Oyster Shell) (2 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Root) (2 qian), Huangqi (Astragalus Root) (Raw, 2 qian), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (3 qian), Shudi (Rehmannia Root Preparata) (3 qian), Mahuanggen (Ephedra Root) (Ephedra induces sweating, its root stops sweating; use the root, 1 qian), Xiaomai Fu Pi (Wheat Bran) (Stir-fried until yellow, 2 qian).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder and mix evenly. Take 3 qian per dose.
Postpartum blood deficiency leads to intestinal dryness, making transportation difficult; constipation is common. The *Neijing* states: "Zang organs obtain blood and can then produce fluids." Treatment should primarily focus on nourishing blood, supplemented by Qi-tonifying agents. Taking several doses of Yangzheng Tongyou Tang (Nourishing Rightness Unblocking Obscurity Decoction) will bring relief. If harsh purgatives are recklessly used, the more one attempts to purge, the more constipated one becomes, potentially leading to death. Exercise extreme caution.
