The child's Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy) is not yet fully developed. Once touched by evil Qi (pathogenic factors), the body cannot maintain control, naturally leading to the separation of Hun and Po (ethereal and corporeal souls), closed eyes, cyanotic complexion, chest oppression with restlessness, and unconsciousness. The ancient method advocates internal administration of Suhexiang Wan (Ambergris Pill) to expel the pathogen (formula see section on Anus Internal Combination), and externally applying raw Zaojiao powder (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spine) into the nasal cavity to open orifices; inducing sneezing will allow Qi flow to resume and restore consciousness.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: For pediatric Zhong'e (sudden collapse due to evil Qi), externally apply equal parts of raw Banxia powder (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and raw Zaojiao powder, insufflating a small amount into the nose to first unblock orifices. Internally, decoct ten stalks of Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) and one qian half of Danzhuru (Bambusa Textilis Stalk Nodule) into a concentrated decoction, then mix with five fen of Baolong Wan (Bear-Claw Pill) fine powder for oral administration.
Appendix: Formula for Baolong Wan
Zhi Danxing (Prepared Calculus Bovis, 1 qian) Tianzhu Huang (Bambusa Textilis Stalk Nodule, 8 fen) Xionghuang Mo (Realgar Powder, 5 fen) Jing Zhusha (Polished Cinnabar, 5 fen) Chao Maidong (Stir-fried Ophiopogonis Radix, 2 fen). Grind all into powder, bind with water paste to form pills.
All cases of Panchang Qitong (colic with abdominal distension) are caused by the binding of cold pathogens. Since Liver and Kidney reside in the lower Jiao, pain causes the waist to curl. The ancient method advocates using Baidoukou San (White Cardamom Powder, e.g., equal parts of Baidoukou, Sharen, Qingpi, Chenpi, Zhi Gancao, Xiangfum, Peng'ezhu, ground into powder, take 1 qian per dose), taken with Zi Su decoction.
Externally, apply Yunqi Fa (umbilical warming therapy, e.g., 2 qian each of Danshaodouchi and Shengjiang, five stalks of Congbai, 1 liang of Yanpan, stir-fry together until cooked, place on the navel and warm).
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: Pediatric Panchang Qi is caused by the stagnation of fetal Qi, obstructing Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), resulting in no organ being free from constraint, and Qi failing to ascend and descend. It blocks between the intestines and stomach, pressing against the heart causing pain. The sound is rumbling, like a cat vomiting foul matter, with dry crying, open mouth, and cold extremities. It is suitable to regulate Qi and harmonize the Middle Jiao, using Hang Qingpi (5 fen), Guang Chenpi (1 qian), Baokouren (5 fen), Dan Jiang (5 fen), Zhi Gancao (5 fen), with Foshoupian (8 fen) as the guide drug.
Abdominal Pikuai (masses) in children may present with alternating chills and fever or intermittent pain. The ancient method advocates Aipi Wan (Mass-Removing Pill, e.g., Vinegar-treated Hematites, Xiao Qingpi, Peng'ezhu, Nanmuxiang, Qing Huagui, Badoushuang, Dahuang, ground into fine powder, bound with vinegar-boiled wheat paste), sized like radish seeds, taking five pills per dose, washed down with light ginger soup.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: For pediatric Pikuai, simply use eight liang of large red dates and five qian of Pixiao (Mirabilite), boil together until the water is dry, sun-dry, and consume these dates daily in slow succession; the masses will gradually dissipate.
