In all cases of postpartum deficiency of Qi and Blood, along with a significant depletion of Middle Qi, any resulting diseases inevitably take advantage of this deficiency. Regarding Yin deficiency, spontaneous fever, body pain, spontaneous sweating, aversion to food, headache, dry mouth, aversion to cold and heat naturally occur. This is what Mr. Lizhai referred to as: various symptoms manifest due to the deficiency of Qi and Blood, making it difficult to categorize them under a specific disease name. (Zhang) I formulated this prescription to nourish Kidney Water to benefit Spleen Earth and Lung Metal, addressing the source of transformation. It is specifically used for insufficiency of Spleen and Kidney Yin, having proven effective in numerous instances, hence named Suyuan Jiushen Tang (Source-Tracing Kidney-Saving Decoction).
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang, 4 qian) Stir-fried Ophiopogonis Radix (Chao Maidong, 1.5 qian, heart removed, stir-fried until yellow) Stir-fried Yellow Atractylodis Rhizoma (Chao Huang Baizhu, 2 qian) White Paeoniae Radix (Bai Shaoyao, wine-stir-fried, 1 qian) White Poria (Bai Fuling, 1.2 qian) Raw Eucommiae Cortex (Sheng Duzhong, 2 qian) Sichuan Dipsaci Radix (Chuan Xuduan, 1.5 qian) Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 2 qian) Charred Zingiberis Rhizoma (Jiang Tan, 6 fen) Add Junci Medulla (Dengxincao) and Nelumbinis Semen (Lianzi), decoct in water, take warm before meals. If there is slight abdominal pain, add Leonuri Herba (Yimucao, 1 qian); if the deficiency is severe, administer with Ginseng Decoction (Renshen Tang). Why does the previous formula use both Charred Zingiberis Rhizoma (Jiangtan) and Junci Medella (Dengxin)? Ancients using Yin-nourishing medicines invariably included one or two herbs with mild diuretic properties such as Polyporus (Zeling), Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie), Poria (Fuling), or Junci Medulla (Dengxin) to slightly drain excessive floating Yang Qi, thereby supplementing the insufficiency of Metal (Lung) and Water (Kidney). If abdominal pain is severe and lochia fails to discharge, the subsequent Jiawei Shenghua Tang (Modified Transformation-Decreeing Decoction) is most appropriate.
The name "Shenghua" implies that "Sheng" (Generate) refers to restoring the old vitality, while "Hua" (Transform) refers to resolving new stagnation. Its efficacy is double that of Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), without the harm of cold-natured herbs damaging the interior. The original formula contains only five herbs: Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Persicae Semen (Taoren), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao), and Blackened Zingiberis Rhizoma (Heijiang). (Zhang) added Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Carthami Flos (Honghua), and Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), three additional herbs, which greatly enhances the effect. It can serve as a sacred medicine for inducing labor; compared to Foshou San (Buddha's Hand Powder), it acts more swiftly and effectively resolves myriad postpartel disorders caused by lochia.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, de-gorged, 3 qian) Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 1 qian) Persicae Semen (Taoren, 13 grains, skin and tips not removed, crushed) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang, 1 qian, stir-fried) Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 2 qian) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao, 6 fen) Carthami Flos (Honghua, 3 fen, washed with wine) Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, peeled, 6 fen, for inducing labor prenatally; add Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 3 qian) for deficient constitutions; remove Renshen postnatally for expelling lochia) Add one Jujubae Fructus (Zao), decoct in water.
