Dai Mao (Trionyx sinensis shell), also known as Dai Mao, belongs to the turtle family. It absorbs the most Yin Qi of water, thus having a cold nature and being non-toxic, capable of resolving all kinds of heat toxins, with its nature being extremely spiritual. Whenever it encounters food-related Gu poison (parasitic poisoning), its body will inevitably shake spontaneously. However, only living specimens are effective; dead ones lose this efficacy. For those poisoned by Gu, blood from a live Dai Mao can be extracted and drunk, or a thick juice made from grinding a live specimen can be taken for immediate relief. Dai Mao treats Xin Feng Jing Xian (convulsions and epilepsy caused by wind affecting the Heart). It resolves irritability and heat, promotes the flow of Qi and Blood, breaks up accumulations (masses in the abdomen), dissipates carbuncles and swellings, and unblocks the large and small intestines. This is because its nature is purely Yin and its flavor and aroma are extremely cold, enabling it to treat such conditions. It is also highly effective in resolving pox toxins. In cases of epidemic pox diseases, taking this herb before the eruption helps resolve it internally, and after eruption reduces the number of lesions. The method involves grinding raw Dai Mao and raw Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn) into thick juices, mixing them evenly, and taking half a he (a traditional unit of volume) warm, three times a day, which is optimal. If the pox lesions are black and sunken, it indicates Heat in the Heart and congealed Blood. To this formula, add a small amount of Zhu Xin Xue (Pig Heart Blood) and five spoons of Zi Cao Zhi (Gardenia Juice/Gromwell Juice), mix well, and take warm.
Zhen Zhu (Pearl) is formed from the essence of Tai Yin (Great Yin). Therefore, when there is no moon in mid-autumn, clams do not form pearls. Its functions mostly enter the Yin meridians. Its color is bright, its texture is hard, and its size varies. The best quality is fresh, complete, and unperforated. Its taste is slightly salty, its nature is cold, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Hand Shaoyin (Heart) and Foot Jueyin (Liver) meridians. When the Heart is deficient and has Heat, Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy) floats and escapes; when the Liver is deficient and has Heat, visual obstructions (cataracts/macular degeneration) form. By clearing Heat from these two meridians, it can calm the Heart and brighten the eyes. Deafness originally belongs to Kidney deficiency with Heat; since Pearl is sweet and cold, it treats this condition. "Reversing the Lung" refers to Lu Zhang (skin edema/swelling). There is rebellious Qi causing distension and fullness in the chest and abdomen, and swelling of the skin on the hands, feet, and body. The Classic states: "All dampness-induced swelling and fullness belong to Spleen Earth." All abdominal distensions and enlargements belong to Heat. This is caused by Spleen deficiency with Heat combined with stagnation. Pearl is sweet in taste; it can tonify the Spleen, clear Heat, soften hardness, grind away accumulations, and eliminate stagnation, thus also treating this condition. When Pearl resides in marshes, rivers and mountains naturally become charming; how much more so when applied to the face, making the complexion lustrous? Regarding Ding Du (carbuncles) and Yong Zhong (abscesses), promoting flesh growth and healing wounds achieves miraculous effects. However, Pearl is extremely hard and must be ground into a fine powder like flour to be edible; otherwise, internal use damages the Zang-Fu organs, and external application causes muscle pain. Clams have no Yin-Yang male-female distinction and require magpie transformation for hatching; thus, Pearl specializes in Yin Essence.
Pearl calms the Spirit, cools Liver Heat, treats skin swelling on hands and feet, pediatric Wind-Heat convulsions, is wrapped in cotton and inserted into the ear to treat deafness, applied to the face to make skin lustrous, descends Phlegm, stops thirst, removes visual obstructions, brightens the eyes, generates flesh, and closes wounds. Bang (Clam) is the mother of Pearl; its meat functions to sober up intoxication, remove Heat, and relieve irritability.
Main Indications (Integration of Pox and Rash): Pearl, finely ground into powder, treats pediatric convulsive heat, calms the Heart, and brightens the eyes. For Ding Du and Yong Du within pox lesions, it is mixed into topical medications for miraculous effects.
