Bivalve Shell (Shi Jue Ming), also known as Qianli Guang. It is generated by absorbing the Yin Qi of water, has a salty flavor and cold nature, and is non-toxic. It enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. The Jueyin meridian opens into the eyes; when blood deficiency with heat occurs, it leads to Qingmang (blindness or severe visual impairment), redness, pain, and nebulae. Due to its salty and cold properties that stop diarrhea and clear heat, it can primarily treat various eye diseases, and entering the Kidney, it tonifies Yin and benefits essence. When ground into fine powder, processed by water levigation, and applied to the eyes, it can also eliminate external nebulae. For nebulae appearing in the eyes after smallpox/variolae, use equal parts of Bivalve Shell (Shi Jue Ming) and Corchori Semen (Gujingcao) ground finely, dipped in pig liver and consumed to make them recede. Those with seven or nine holes are of good quality; those with ten holes are inferior. For medicinal use, wrap it in flour and roast until cooked, grind off the rough skin, pound into a fine powder resembling levigated flour, before it is suitable for decoction. Paired with Dragon Bone (Longgu), it treats seminal emission.
Orally administered, Bivalve Shell (Shi Jue Ming) clears blindness, eliminates nebulae; externally applied, it reduces red membranes and removes external nebulae. It also treats bone-steaming consumptive fever. It additionally treats the five types of strangury (Wulin); long-term use can also benefit essence.
Main Indications (Integrated with Smallpox/Varicella Treatment): Treats nebulae in the eyes following smallpox/variolae.
Dragon Bone (Longgu), has a sweet and neutral flavor, slightly cold nature, and is non-toxic. Internally corresponds to the Liver. It enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian, Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, and Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and additionally enters the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. The dragon embodies Yang Qi but hides within Yin; it is the Spirit of the East, representing Yang within Yin, and the leader of scaled creatures, a spiritual entity. "Spirit" refers to the union of two essences, where Yin and Yang interact unpredictably. Spirit possesses agility and can repel evil, gu poison, nightmare spirits, and ghostly influences affecting the heart and abdomen. Cough and upward rushing of Qi occur because Qi fails to return to its root. When Qi is astringed and returned to its root, cough and upward rushing cease naturally. Its astringent nature prevents collapse, thus it can stop dysentery with pus and blood, and metrorrhagia in women. When the Heart and Liver viscera of children are deficient, heat arises; excessive heat causes fright and convulsions. If frightful Qi enters the abdomen, it causes fullness and irritability in the heart and abdomen. By astringing and pacifying the Shen (Spirit) of these two meridians, heat dissipates, and fright, convulsions, and female irritability are removed. Excessive Liver Qi overacts on the Spleen; since the Spleen governs the four limbs, this results in flaccidity and atrophy of the limbs. When the Liver is pacified, heat recedes, and the Spleen is also soothed; hence, it is indicated for these conditions. If Heart Qi fails to retain, sweating occurs. Deficiency in the Liver, Heart, and Kidney meridians leads to unsettled Hun and Po (Soul and Spirit), causing spontaneous fright. Astringing the Shen of these three meridians allows the Hun and Po to settle, regulating ascending and descending movements, calming wheezing, and stopping sweating. Excessive Liver Qi leads to anger; when the Hun returns to the Liver, anger subsides. The Small Intestine is the Fu organ of the Heart, and the Bladder is the Fu organ of the Kidney. Deficiency and collapse of Qi in these three meridians result in polyuria and incontinence. When Zang Qi is astringed, Fu Qi follows suit; thus, it can reduce urination, stop nocturnal emission and seminal leakage, and treat hematuria. Its ability to nourish spirit, stabilize soul, and calm the five viscera stems from the ultimate efficacy of gathering Shen and securing essence. It also treats hard abdominal masses (Jiajianjie), intestinal abscesses, internal ulcers, and genital erosion, because it can guide therapeutic herbs to adhere to the affected areas.
Note: Dragon Bone (Longgu) enters the Heart, Kidney, Intestine, and Stomach meridians, while Dragon Tooth (Longchi) enters only the Liver and Heart meridians. Therefore, Dragon Bone (Longgu) has the additional function of stopping diarrhea and astringing essence; Dragon Tooth (Longchi) is solely used to calm fright and stabilize the soul. For usage, soak Dragon Bone (Longgu) in wine overnight, dry by roasting, grind into powder, and process by water levigation three times. For urgent use, boil in wine and dry by roasting. Some say that for medicinal use, it must be water-levigated and sun-dried; for every jin (500g), use one dou (approx. 10L) of black beans, boil for one shichen (2 hours), then sun-dry. Otherwise, entering the intestines and stomach, it may cause heat disorders in later years.
Dragon Bone (Longgu) treats cough and upward rushing, dysentery, abdominal spasms due to ghostly influence, astringent intestines, stops diarrhea, consolidates, raises floating Zheng Qi, stops wind-intestinal bleeding, generates flesh, heals sores, rectal prolapse, leukorrhea and metrorrhagia in women, hard abdominal masses, pediatric heat-induced fright and convulsions, heart-abdominal irritability, limb atrophy, spontaneous fright during sleep, anger, stagnant Qi preventing normal breathing, intestinal abscesses, internal ulcers, genital erosion, hematuria, and seminal emission. It nourishes spirit, stabilizes soul, calms five viscera, reduces urination, secures deficiency sweating, and prohibits nocturnal emission. In summary, it is an agent that prevents loss and consolidates Qi by astringing the intestines; long-term use may instead lead to depletion of essence and dryness-heat. Dragon Tooth (Longchi) specifically treats calming fright and hyperthermia, and kills gu poison.
Main Indications (Integrated with Smallpox/Varicella Treatment): Only used temporarily in pill form for cases of slippery diarrhea during smallpox/variolae.
