Bai Fu Zi (Rhizoma Typhonii) is born from the sensation of Yang Qi, thus its flavor is pungent, its qi is greatly warm, and it has slight toxicity. Its nature is drying and ascending; it is a Yang herb among wind-dispelling drugs. Li Dongyuan stated that it is purely Yang, guides the medicinal force upward, can remove various diseases on the face, eliminates scars and blemishes, wipes away sweat spots, expels wind-phlegm, drives out cold pathogens, dries dampness and dissipates nodules. It is an essential medicine for treating stroke with phlegm and syncope, and acute convulsions in children. However, its nature is warm and drying. For conditions resembling stroke due to Yin deficiency, and slow convulsions in children due to Spleen deficiency, it must be strictly contraindicated.
Bai Fu Zi (Rhizoma Typhonii) treats various wind-cold qi stagnation, aphonia due to stroke, blood bi with cold pain. It reduces phlegm and dispels dampness, and guides the medicinal force upward to remove various diseases on the face. If adults have conditions resembling stroke due to Yin deficiency, or children have slow convulsions due to Spleen deficiency, do not use it by mistake.
Main Indications (Integration of Smallpox and Rashes): Treats smallpox/rash where wind-heat does not subside, and where lesions on limbs, head, and face fail to erupt. Use it to disperse wind, clear heat, and resolve toxicity.
Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) obtains the Qi of Fire and Earth, and additionally inherits the Yang Qi of Heaven. Thus, its flavor is bitter and sweet, its nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. It is an essential medicine for dispelling wind, removing dampness, and tonifying the lower jiao.
Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) is incompatible with beef. The white variety is superior. It treats wind-cold-damp bi, cold pain in the waist and back, pulling pain in bones and sinews. It nourishes the Water organ, benefits essence, reduces urination, brightens the eyes, expels joint pathologies, resolves old blood stasis, clears the skin, prolongs life, treats malignant sores, anger damaging the middle, and the "Five Laxities" in the elderly. Its merit lies primarily in resolving dampness, while it is inferior in clearing heat. It can drain water accumulation in the Bladder and stop enuresis and frequent urination. For cases of chancroid/malignant sores where the disease has persisted, leading to decline of fire, consumption of Qi, and dampness stagnation, use Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) 3 liang, along with Gleditsiae Spina (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) and Phelodendri Cortex (Phellodendri Amurensis Cortex) [Note: Text says 'Jiao Ci Qian Niu' which usually refers to Gleditsia and Morning Glory seed, but context implies specific herbs. 'Qian Niu' is Pharbitidis Semen. 'Jiao Ci' is Gleditsiae Spina.] each 1 qian, add 6 bowls of water, decoct until half remains, take warm in three doses. Recovery often occurs within a few doses. If there is no effect after the first dose, it is because the internal fire is still vigorous.
Main Indications (Integration of Smallpox and Rashes): Treats smallpox/rash where vesicles are too abundant and cannot dry and crust over. Use it to渗泄 (percolate and absorb) dampness.
Commentary: The main uses of Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) are all to dispel wind-dampness and tonify the lower Yuan. Whenever there is frequent urination and pain inside the urethra, it must be due to heat closure in the Large Intestine. Fluids only flow to the Small Intestine, causing the Large Intestine to become increasingly dry and exhausted. This is caused by forcibly restraining sexual intercourse, leading to stasis and putrefaction obstructing the Lower Jiao, hence the pain. This differs from Lin Syndrome (Strangury). It is appropriate to use Salt-fried Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) 1 liang, decoct and drink. Wash the anus with Scallion Decoction, and it will heal. When the Kidney is affected by Earth-pathogens, Water declines. The Liver, carrying Ministerial Fire, retaliates against the Mother (Water) and insults Earth. With Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) to percolate dampness, Earth remains stable in its position, and Water is no longer insulted. Do not use if there is Yin deficiency with blazing fire, or Kidney deficiency without dampness presenting as lower back pain.
