Tea (Camellia Sinensis): It inherits the clear qi from the earth and combines with the generative intent of early spring; therefore, its taste is sweet and bitter, its nature is slightly cold, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Due to its sweet and cold nature, it enters the heart and lungs to clear heat, eliminates phlegm, promotes urination, and detoxifies. Furthermore, inheriting the purest qi of heaven and earth, it grows in the sandy soil of valleys, nourished by cloud and dew, free from any impurity; thus, it can cleanse all kinds of grease and filth, and resolve toxins from roasting or burning. Those with cold in the heart, spleen, and stomach should avoid it. It cannot be consumed after drinking alcohol, as it may lead to "alcohol accumulation" syndrome.
Fine tea leaves are called "Cha," while coarse ones are called "Ming." They clear the head and eyes, promote urination, expel phlegm, relieve thirst and irritability, direct qi downward, digest retained food, clear heat, treat sores, remove irritability and filth, and resolve toxins from roasting or burning. Decocted with Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), it stops dysentery with red and white discharge; applied externally with sesame oil powder, it treats burns and scalds; chewed and applied to the temples for eye pain; taken in small amounts during summer diarrhea, swallowed with vinegar. Hot consumption is suitable; cold consumption gathers phlegm; excessive consumption leads to insomnia; long-term consumption causes emaciation. Therefore, it is said: "It clears stagnation and resolves obstruction, offering temporary benefit for a day, but depletes qi and invades essence, causing lifelong harm; damage outweighs benefit, which is evident here." Drinking tea on an empty stomach allows the effect to enter directly into the Kidney Meridian and cold the spleen and stomach, akin to inviting thieves into the house; this must be avoided.
Indications (Integrated Study of Smallpox and Rashes): Treats pustular sores and ulcerating wounds; grind into powder and apply mixed with sesame oil.
Frankincense (Ruxiang): It receives the qi of Wood and combines with the transformation of Fire; its taste is bitter and acrid, its nature is slightly warm, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, and also the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian; therefore, the diseases it treats are those of these three meridians. Roast over bamboo leaf to remove oil, and grind with rush pith for finer powder.
Frankincense treats sudden pain in various meridians, acute pain in the heart and abdomen, various malignant sores, all swellings and toxic masses, all types of pain, severe pain from malignant dysentery, intestinal wind pain, and exceptional torment. It protects the heart, invigorates blood, detoxifies, and generates flesh; it is also used in obstetrics. However, Frankincense's function specializes in generating blood and governing the Heart, whereas Myrrh's function specializes in dispersing blood and governing the Liver.
Indications (Integrated Study of Smallpox and Rashes): Removes evil qi, regulates qi and blood, stabilizes pain in various meridians, internally reduces swelling and toxicity, externally treats toxic vapors, and its property can extend tendons; thus, it is essential in external applications for those with stiff tendons. It is used for residual toxins after smallpox, various ulcerated sores, abscesses, flesh generation, and pain relief. However, it should not be taken internally if the sore/abscess has already ulcerated. It should not be applied externally if there is excessive pus and blood, because its acrid and aromatic nature moves and disperses qi and blood, and it also has a mild diuretic and leaching effect.
