东垣曰∶白术甘温补脾胃之元气,共味苦,除胃中湿热,利腰脐间血过于枳实克伐之药一倍;

Shen treats diarrhea caused by spleen deficiency and damp-heat.
Retain Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3 liang, stir-fried), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 4 liang, stir-fried until slightly yellow), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 liang, stir-fried until slightly yellow), Bai Fuling (Poria, 6 liang, baked), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, honey-fried), Bai Biandou (Dolichoris Semen, 6 liang, stir-fried until slightly yellow), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 2 liang, stir-fried). Grind all into a fine powder. For each dose, mix with black rock sugar and take with decoction of roasted ginger slices, adjusting the dosage according to the patient's size and severity of illness.
Eliminating distension and removing phlegm belongs to the "reducing method" (Xiao); strengthening the spleen and promoting appetite belongs to the "tonifying method" (Bu).
Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, 1 liang, stir-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang, stir-fried). Grind into powder, wrap in lotus leaf with leftover rice from previous days, dry by simmering, and form into pills.
Li Dongyuan said: Baizhu is sweet and warm, tonifying the primordial qi of the spleen and stomach; its bitter taste clears damp-heat in the stomach and benefits blood circulation between the waist and umbilicus, its tonifying effect being twice that of Zhishi, which is a harsh reducing herb; Zhishi is bitter and cold, draining epigastric fullness and resolving food injury in the stomach. This first tonifies the deficiency and then resolves the injury, so the action will not be too harsh.
The lotus leaf is hollow inside and green outside, with an upward shape symbolizing the Zhen trigram (East, Wood). In humans, it corresponds to the Shaoyang Gallbladder channel, serving as the root of biological generation. When food enters the stomach, Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) ascends, which is equivalent to the Qi of the Jia-Gallbladder (Shaoyang). The Stomach Qi, Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi), Gu Qi (Grain Qi), and the ascending Qi of the Jia-Gallbladder are essentially one. Food and medicine respond to this Qi transformation; how can Stomach Qi fail to ascend? Cooking rice cooperates with Baizhu to nourish Gu Qi, replenishing it to make Stomach Qi robust and preventing further injury, thereby providing extensive benefit.
Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Lian Zhu (likely referring to Baizhu or Lotus Seed related processing, but literally Lotus Art), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) (each in equal parts).
