Shengma Liuwu Tang (Cinnamon Twig Six-Ingredient Decoction) is used for pharyngeal pain and oral/dental lesions caused by erroneous sweating therapy.
Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae) each 1.5 qian; Daqing (Lithospermi Radix et Rhizoma), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) each 1 qian; Congbai (Bulbus Allii Cepae) three stalks. Decoct in water. It treats Yang Jue (Yang Reversal) syndrome where purgation should have been used but sweating was erroneously applied, inevitably resulting in pharyngeal pain, mouth sores, and dental swelling.
Qinlian Xiaodu Yin (Scutellaria and Coptis Detoxifying Drink) is used for epidemic colds causing pharyngeal swelling involving the head and forehead.
Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Shegan (Rhizoma Belamcandae), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), with three slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Decoct, add Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii) a pinch, boil once more, then mix with Zhuli (Natrii Carbonas) and Jiangzhi (Succus Zingiberis Recens) before taking. It treats Tianxing Datou Bing (Epidemic Big Head Disease), characterized by fever and aversion to cold, swelling and pain of the head, neck, throat, and a surging pulse, treated as Phlegm-Fire. When using this formula, it is advisable to first add Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) to promote bowel movement one or two times, then remove Dahuang and add Renshen (Radix Ginseng) and Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) for regulation.
In Chest Binding (Jie Xiong) with heat and thirst, use Daxianxiong Tang (Major Yellow Dragon Decoction) or Shizao Tang (Ten Date Decoction);
Daxianxiong Tang: Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 3.5 qian (5 qian for robust patients with severe illness), decoct in one cup of water until reduced to 0.7 cup, add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) 2 qian, boil one or two more times, strain, add Gansui (Radix Kansui) powder 1 fen, mix well and take warm. If there is no reaction in the abdomen, administer another dose. It treats Taiyang disease where the exterior syndrome has not resolved, but the physician erroneously used purgation, leading to rejection pain in the diaphragm, tenderness to touch, shortness of breath, mental restlessness, hardness below the heart, constipation, dry tongue with thirst, and a deep, tight pulse indicating Heat-Excess. It also treats cases without significant fever where fluid retention binds in the chest and hypochondrium. The rationale is that Dahuang's bitterness purges heat, Mangxiao's saltiness softens hardness, and Gansui unblocks fluid, allowing direct penetration through the chest binding. However, this medicine is too harsh and should not be used lightly; if unavoidable, use Daxianxiong Wan (Major Yellow Dragon Pill). Daxianxiong Wan: Dahuang 3 qian, Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Tingli (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae) each 1 qian, Mangxiao 2.5 qian, Gansui 1 fen (0.5 fen for weak patients). Grind into powder, make pills with honey the size of a bullet. Take one pill, decoct in one cup of water until reduced to 0.6 cup, take warm. If no effect after overnight, take another pill, stopping when bowels move. It treats Heat-Excess Chest Binding with neck stiffness resembling Rou Jing (Soft Spasm); purging with this formula brings harmony. The rationale is that Mangxiao and Dahuang's salty-bitter nature purges heat, Tingli and Xingren's bitter-sweet nature drains fullness, Gansui reaches directly, and white honey provides lubrication, all working to purge excess accumulation. Xiao Xianxiong Tang (Minor Yellow Dragon Decoction): Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 3 qian, Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) 1 qian, Gualou Ren (Semen Benincasae) 2 qian, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) three slices. Decoct in water, take warm. Relief occurs upon discharge of yellow sputum. Another variation adds Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae). It treats Chest Binding centered at the epigastrium, painful on pressure, with a floating-slippery pulse. The rationale is Banxia's pungency disperses binding Qi, Huanglian's bitterness drains fullness-excess, and Gualou's bitterness widens the middle and moistens downward. Shizao Tang (Ten Date Decoction): Yuanhua (Flos Genkwa), Gansui (Radix Kansui), Daye (Radix Euphorbiae Hussonis) equal parts ground to powder. Use ten large dates, decoct in one cup of water until half remains, remove dates, mix with 5 fen of powder (half dose for weak patients). After taking, profuse diarrhea with water discharge occurs; replenish with congee. It treats Taiyang Wind Strike with diarrhea, vomiting, sweating, paroxysmal headaches, epigastric hardness/fullness radiating to the hypochondrium, dry retching, shortness of breath, absence of aversion to cold, and interior water retention with cool body. The rationale is that diarrhea/vomiting indicate interior pathogen suitable for purging; sweating without aversion to cold and paroxysmal symptoms indicate exterior resolution suitable for attack; headache, hypochondriac pain, epigastric blockage, dry retching, and shortness of breath indicate internal accumulation of evil heat with latent fluid retention, meaning the interior is not harmonized. Thus, Yuanhua's pungency disperses fluid, Daye/Gansui's bitterness drains water, and dates' sweetness tonifies Earth to overcome water.
Cold Chest Binding without irritability uses Zhishi Lizhong Wan (Immature Bitter Orange and Middle-Regulating Pill) or Sanwu Bai San (Three-Ingredient White Powder).
Zhishi Lizhong Wan: Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Fuling (Poria) each 1 liang, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatus) each 7.5 qian, Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) 6 qian, Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 2.5 qian. Make pills with honey the size of a bullet. Dissolve one pill in boiling water before taking. It treats Taiyin disease caused by erroneous purgation, Cold-Excess Chest Binding, and post-emesis/purgation Taiyang disease with extreme chest oppression, protruding pain, and tenderness. Add Huatufen (Radix Trichosanthis) for thirst; add Muli (Concha Ostreae) for persistent sweating/diarrhea. Sanwu Bai San: Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) each 3 qian, Badou (Semen Crotonis) 1 qian. Grind to powder. Take 5 fen (half for weak), mix with white water. Pathogens above the diaphragm cause vomiting; below cause diarrhea. If neither occurs, drink half a cup of hot porridge to assist; if vomiting/diarrhea are excessive, drink half a cup of cold porridge to stop. It treats Cold-Excess Chest Binding without heat signs.
Sanhuang Fuzi Xiexin Tang (Three-Yellow and Aconite Heart-Draining Decoction) treats epigastric hardness due to deficiency-cold coagulation;
Sanhuang Xiexin Tang: Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 3 qian, Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) each 1.5 qian. Soak in one cup of "boiling hemp tea" (hot water), cover, wait the time of one meal, cool slightly, strain, and take warm in one dose. Soaking in boiling water extracts thin qi to drain deficient heat. It treats epigastric hardness with internal heat-excess and constipation, with a floating Guan pulse; avoid if aversion to cold is present. Fuzi Xiexin Tang: Use half a Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), decoct in one cup of water until half remains, strain, then mix into Sanhuang Xiexin Tang, divide into two doses, take warm. It treats epigastric hardness with aversion to cold and sweating.
Banxia Ganjiang Xiexin Tang (Pinellia, Licorice, and Ginger Heart-Draining Decoction) treats soft epigastric fullness with rebellious Qi;
Banxia Xiexin Tang: Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) 2.5 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 3 qian, Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatus), Renshen (Radix Ginseng) each 2 qian, Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 1 qian, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) three slices, Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) two pieces. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats epigastric fullness, soft but not painful. Gancao Xiexin Tang: Same as Banxia Xiexin Tang plus Gancao 1 qian, Renshen 1.5 qian. It treats Taiyang/Shanghan after erroneous purgation, causing frequent diarrhea (dozens of times daily), undigested food, borborygmus, epigastric hardness, dry retching, and irritability. Further purgation worsens the blockage due to deficient Qi rebelling upward. Shengjiang Xiexin Tang: Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) each 2 qian, Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatus) each 1.5 qian, Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) each 1 qian, Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 0.5 qian, Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) two pieces. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats post-sweating resolution with stomach disharmony, epigastric blockage, belching with food odor, or fluid retention in the hypochondrium with borborygmus and diarrhea. All these Xiexin Tang formulas are based on Sanhuang Xiexin Tang; Dahuang, Huangqin, Huanglian's bitter-cold nature drains epigastric blockage. Since blockage is deficient-heat, aversion to cold/sweating indicates external dispersion of Yang, so add Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) to secure Yang. As the Stomach is the root of Yang Qi, sweating depletes fluids, causing Stomach deficiency and Qi rebellion (belching/food odor/inability to digest) or fluid retention/borborygmus/diarrhea (Earth weakness failing to control Water), so add Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) to benefit Stomach Yang. For persistent diarrhea, undigested food, dry retching, and worsening blockage due to Stomach deficiency and Qi rebellion, add Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) to tonify Stomach Yin Qi.
Blockage with slippery discharge uses Yuyuliang Tang (Magnetite and Red Clay Decoction).
Chishizhi Yuyuliang Tang: Both ingredients 2 qian each. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats epigastric hardness where Xiexin Tang failed to stop diarrhea, or Taiyang diarrhea worsened by Lizhong Tang. This is due to lower Jiao failure to restrain, causing indistinguishable water and grain. Thus, Chishizhi (Lapis Kaolinis) astringes, and Yuyuliangshi (Haematitum) weighs down to stabilize. Materia Medica states: Astringents treat prolapse, heavy substances treat timidity. If ineffective, promote urination. Also treats excessive sweating causing mental confusion, pain in the yin channel after urination.
Blockage with dry belching uses Daizhe Shi Tang (Magnetite Decoction).
Xuanfu Daizhe Shi Tang: Xuanfuhua (Flos Inulae) 3 qian, Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) each 2 qian, Daizhe Shi (Lapis Magnetitum) 1 qian, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) five slices, Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) two pieces. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats post-sweating/vomiting/purgation epigastric hardness, Stomach deficiency with rebellious Qi, dry belching or vomiting. The rationale is Xuanfuhua's saltiness softens hardness, Daizhe Shi's heaviness calms rebellious Qi, Shengjiang/Banxia's pungency disperses blockage Qi, and Renshen/Gancao/Dazao's sweetness tonifies Stomach deficiency.
Chaihu Xianxiong Tang combined with Guizhi Renshen Tang treats blockage by releasing the exterior and harmonizing the middle;
Chai Xian Tang: Combination of Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) and Xiao Xianxiong Tang (Minor Yellow Dragon Decoction). It treats early-stage Chest Binding/blockage with exterior symptoms, as well as Fluid, Phlegm, and Heat bindings. Guizhi Renshen Tang: Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatus) each 1 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) each 2 qian. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats unresolved Taiyang syndrome exacerbated by multiple purgations, leading to協熱下利 (Collaborative Heat Diarrhea) with epigastric hardness and simultaneous exterior-interior disharmony. The rationale is that while exterior evil remains, interior Qi is deficient, so Guizhi is added to Lizhong Tang.
Binglang Zhike Geng Tang (Betel Nut, Immature Bitter Orange, and Platycodon Decoction) regulates Qi to open the diaphragm for blockage;
Binglang Tang: Binglang (Semen Arecae), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) equal parts, slight amount of Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis). Decoct in water, take warm. It treats pre-formed Chest Binding/blockage; take this first to regulate Qi. Zhige Geng Tang: Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) equal parts. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats Chest Binding/blockage, chest fullness with difficulty, severe stifling sensation, applicable to both cold and heat. If phlegm exists, combine with Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) to form Zhige Erchen Tang. Add Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) for exterior heat or alternating chills/fever; add Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) for internal heat; add Gualou Ren (Semen Benincasae) for phlegm-wheezing; remove Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) and add Huatufen (Radix Trichosanthis) for dry mouth.
Critical Chest Binding uses moxibustion filled with Badou (Croton Seed) and Huanglian (Coptis);
Moxibustion for Chest Binding: Crush 10 Badou (Semen Crotonis) seeds, mix with 1 qian Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) powder, form into cakes, place in the umbilicus. Apply moxa cones finger-sized. Light cases: one cone; severe cases: no more than two. Wait until abdomen feels slightly warm, then evacuate foul matter for immediate effect. Wash hands with warm water after moxibustion to prevent sores. It treats critical Chest Binding where touch is intolerable, constipation/urinary retention, or days without passage, faint breathing, or persistent vomiting, unresponsive to other medicines.
Blockage uses warming compresses wrapped in silk with Ginger and Scallion.
Compress for Chest Binding: One fresh hen egg, four liang of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Mash, stir-fry until slightly warm, spread over the firm chest area like a plate. Bind with bamboo leaf and silk. After half a day, when abdominal heat/dryness subsides, remove and massage with warm hands. Use regardless of time. First step must be done first. Warming Compress for Chest Binding: Ten stalks of Congbai (Bulbus Allii Cepae), one liang of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Mash into cakes, heat, apply to umbilicus. Place heated iron over the cake. After half an hour, when heat enters and sounds are heard, stop. Then take Zhishi Lizhong Wan with Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) or Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder). It treats Yin syndrome cold binding with cold limbs, and applies to Yin Du (Yin Toxin) until sweating occurs; replace cakes 3-5 times. Blockage Qi Method: Er Zi (Semen Brassicae), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) two liang, Congbai (Bulbus Allii Cepae) seven stalks, Juye (Folium Citri Reticulatae) one handful, Baifan (Triticum Vulgare Farina) half he. Mash, stir-fry until slightly warm, apply to fullness, bind externally. After half a day, if chest becomes hot/stifled, remove, clean, and massage with warm hands. Applicable to all conditions. Warming Compress for Blockage Qi: One handful of Juye (Folium Citri Reticulatae), half sheng of Maifan (Farina Tritici Vulgaris Roast). Stir-fry hot, wrap in paper and silk, apply hot to fullness. Reheat when cold. Stop when patient feels relief. Best used early in blockage onset.
Zhizi Houpo Tang (Gardenia and Magnolia Bark Decoction) treats Ao Nan (Restlessness) and distension; Houpo (Magnolia Bark) should be raw.
Zhizi Houpo Tang: Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae) 1.5 qian, Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) 3 qian, Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) 2 qian. Decoct in water, take warm. Stop if vomiting occurs. It treats post-purgation Taiyang with mental restlessness and abdominal fullness, inability to sit/lie comfortably. The rationale is Shanzhi's bitterness induces vomiting of deficient restlessness, Zhishi/Houpo's bitterness drains abdominal fullness. Without abdominal fullness, Zhichi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is excellent.
Guizhi Gancao Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Licorice Decoction) treats palpitations and intermittent pulse; use roasted Gancao.
Guizhi Gancao Tang: Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 3.3 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 2.2 qian. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats palpitations wanting pressure after excessive sweating, or body trembling wanting to fall. If pulse is intermittent/knotted, use Zhigancao Tang (Roasted Licorice Decoction).
Chest fullness with deficiency and vomiting uses Zhichi Gancao Shengjiang Tang (Gardenia, Licorice, and Ginger Decoction);
Zhichi Gancao Tang: Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae) four pieces, Douchi (Soybeans Preparatum) 5 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 2 qian. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats chest fullness with shortness of breath. Heat damages Qi, so Gancao is added to Zhichi Tang to tonify Qi. Zhichi Shengjiang Tang: Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae) four pieces, Douchi (Soybeans Preparatum) 5 qian, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) one liang. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats chest fullness with vomiting. Heat struggles with Qi rebellion, so Shengjiang is added to Zhichi Tang to disperse rebellious Qi.
Hypochondriac fullness with heat and phlegm uses Chaihu Jiegeng Qingpi Xingren Tang (Bupleurum, Platycodon, Green Tangerine Peel, and Apricot Kernel Decoction);
Chaihu Jiegeng Tang: Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) minus Renshen (Radix Ginseng), combined with Zhige Geng Tang (Immature Bitter Orange and Platycodon Decoction). It treats chest/hypochondriac blockage or pain. Chaihu Banxia Tang: Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 2 qian, Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Gualou Ren (Semen Benincasae) each 1 qian, Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) each 0.8 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 0.4 qian. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats fever/cough, chest fullness, tearing pain in both hypochondria, caused by evil heat combining with phlegm. Remove Banxia if dry mouth/thirst; add Baijiezi (Semen Sinapis) or Zhuli/Jiangzhi if phlegm is in hypochondrium. Chai Chen Tang: Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) combined with Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction). It treats Phlegm-Qi chest/hypochondriac obstruction and Phlegm Malaria.
Abdominal pain with lower cold uses Huanglian Ganjiang Tang (Coptis and Dried Ginger Decoction);
Huanglian Tang: Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 2 qian, Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatus), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) each 1 qian, Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 1.5 qian, Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) 1.2 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 0.5 qian, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) three slices, Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) two pieces. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats heat in the chest, evil Qi in the Stomach, abdominal pain, and desire to vomit, representing Upper Heat and Lower Cold. The rationale is Yang cannot descend causing chest heat/vomiting, Yin cannot ascend causing lower cold/abdominal pain. Thus, Huanglian's bitterness descends Yang, Ginger/Cinnamon/Pinellia's pungency ascends Yin, and Ginseng/Licorice/Date's sweetness benefits the Stomach.
Abdominal distension after sweating uses Houpo Banxia Tang (Magnolia Bark and Pinellia Decoction);
Houpo Banxia Gan Shen Tang: Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) 3 qian, Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) 2 qian, Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 1 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 0.5 qian, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) three slices. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats abdominal distension and pain after sweating. The rationale is Houpo's bitterness drains fullness, Ginseng/Licorice's sweetness benefits Spleen/Stomach, Banxia/Ginger's pungency disperses stagnant Qi. Jiegeng Banxia Tang: Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), three ingredients equal parts. Decoct with ginger, take warm. It treats abdominal/chest fullness due to disharmony of Yin/Yang Qi.
Moving Qi rushing to the heart uses Bawei Ligen Tang (Eight-Ingredient Plum Root Decoction);
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Fuling (Poria), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) each 2 qian, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 3 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) each 1 qian, Gan Li Gen Bai Pi (Cortex Pruni Padus) one liang. Decoct in water, take warm. It treats Moving Qi in the upper region; sweating causes Qi to rush to the heart causing breathlessness.
Huo Luan (Colic and Vomiting) often due to summerheat, removed by Erxiang Huanglian San (Two-Aromatic Coptis Powder);
Huoxiang (Herba Pogostemonis), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Bian Dou (Semen Lablab Album), Xiangru (Herba Moslae) each 1 qian, Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis) each 0.8 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 0.3 qian. Decoct, add one spoon of Jiangzhi (Succus Zingiberis Recens), take warm. Double dosage if vomiting is severe. It treats sudden Huo Luan due to latent summerheat, with mental restlessness, agitation, abdominal pain, cold sweat, deep Chi pulse, and cold limbs. Hot medicines are contraindicated.
Dry stool uses Maziren Wan (Hemp Seed Pill);
Maziren Wan, also known as Pi Yue Wan (Spley Restriction Pill): Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) each 5 qian, Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) 2 qian, Maziren (Semen Cannabis) 3 qian. Grind, make pills with honey the size of mung beans. Take 30 pills with warm water. Repeat if no bowel movement, stop when effective. It treats frequent urination and difficult defecation, named Spley Restriction, suitable for unblocking intestines and moistening dryness. The rationale is Hemp/Apricot kernel's sweetness moderates Spleen and moistens dryness; insufficient fluids are astringed by Shaoyao's sourness; intestinal dryness and Stomach strength are drained by Zhishi/Houpo/Dahuang's bitterness to purge dryness and reduce Stomach excess. After taking, sudden pulse emergence indicates death; slight emergence indicates survival. The rationale is Kidney governs water; invading cold damages Kidney, failing to control water, causing cold reversal/diarrhea. Congbai's pungency opens Kidney Yang; Ginger/Aconite's pungency disperses Yin cold. Adding Tongbian/Bile follows Neijing's principle of balancing cold/heat reversals, mixing cold/hot administration. Otherwise, hot medicine taken cold eliminates the cold nature first, allowing heat nature to act, harmonizing with the disease to overcome rejecting cold.
