Pathogenic factors invading the collaterals cause Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome), and heat in the collaterals also causes Wei syndrome. Wei syndrome is essentially a disease of the Liver, Kidney, Lung, and Stomach meridians. The Liver governs the sinews; when the Liver is injured, the four limbs cannot be used, resulting in stiffness and contraction of the sinews and bones. The Kidneys store Essence (Jing); Essence and Blood generate each other. If Essence is deficient, it cannot irrigate the extremities; if Blood is deficient, it cannot nourish the sinews and bones. The Lungs govern Qi and are the organ of clarity and height. When the Lungs are deficient, the source of transformation (Upper Source) is cut off. When the source of transformation is cut off, fluids dry up. When fluids dry up, they cannot moisten the sinews and bones. The Yangming Meridian is the chief of the Zongjin (major sinews). When Yangming is deficient, the Zongjin become lax and cannot bind the sinews and bones to facilitate joint movement. The Classics state: "If damp-heat is not eliminated, the large sinews become soft and short, and the small sinews become flaccid and long." Softness and shortness manifest as stiffness; flaccidity and length manifest as Wei syndrome. Flaccidity syndrome of the four limbs is characterized by weakness, absence of itching or pain, and difficulty in walking. The five types of Wei syndrome involve sinews, vessels, flesh, skin, and bone; the treatment principle focuses exclusively on the Yangming Meridian. The Yangming Meridian is the chief of the Zongjin, primarily moistening them and allowing mutual nourishment. Deficiency leads to laxity and inability to retain the Zongjin, causing failure in binding bones and facilitating joints. This is ultimately due to injury of the Liver, Kidney, Lung, and Stomach, rendering the four extremities useless and affecting the Liver and Spleen. How can Lung Heat provide moisture? The manifestation is clear: the Upper Source of transformation is cut off, and water/fluids are depleted. Clearing the Heart and tonifying the Kidney using formulas like Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) and Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) is beneficial; Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) clear heat; Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) guides herbs to the Lungs; Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), and Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus) are used; Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis) opens orifices; Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) lifts Qi. The method for treating Wei syndrome specializes in tonifying Yin; medicines for strengthening bones and tonifying deficiency must be prepared.

Chen Xiu Yuan said: The method for treating Wei syndrome, as stated in the Classics, "focus exclusively on Yangming," is nothing but to circulate Stomach Qi, because the Stomach meridian governs binding sinews and bones and facilitating joints. If the head and neck feel suddenly hot and steaming, phlegm and saliva surge, and the taste is sour, this indicates that the Du Meridian fails to govern reception and binding, Kidney deficiency fails to receive and hold, Yin Fire flares upward, and Internal Wind rises together. It is appropriate to use methods to open and receive into the meridians to gather scattered Yin and Yang.
