The symptoms of Huoluan (cholera-like disease with sudden vomiting and diarrhea) arise suddenly, caused by both external pathogenic factors and internal accumulation. Stagnant fluids in the stomach are difficult to transform and digest, leading to simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea with severe abdominal pain. If the pathology is in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), there is only vomiting without diarrhea; if it is in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), there is only diarrhea without the upward reversal of vomiting. If it is in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), both vomiting and diarrhea occur together. Conditions tending toward Yin patterns manifest as Cold, while those tending toward Yang patterns manifest as Heat. Caused by Wind, there is aversion to wind and sweating; caused by Cold, there is aversion to cold and no sweat. Caused by Summerheat, there is vexation, heat, restlessness, and stifling sensation; caused by Warmth, there is fatigue and bodily heaviness/discomfort. Caused by Food Stagnation, there is natural fullness and distension in the chest and lungs; treatment should use Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Powder to Rectify the Qi). For muscle spasms (Zhuanjin), use Honghua (Carthamus Flower) and Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit); for food injury, add Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), Maiya (Sprouted Barley), and Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit). For abdominal pain, add Chao Baishao (Stir-fried White Peony Root); for Cold patterns, Guirui (Cinnamon Twig) and Paojiang (Roasted Ginger) should be used judiciously. For subcostal fullness (Xixin Pi), use Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel); for alternating chills and fever, use Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) and Gange (Pueraria Root). For difficulty in urination, use Zhuling (Polyporus) and Zexie (Alisma Rhizome); for Summerheat-induced fever, use Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit) and Xiangru (Elsholtzia Herb). For cold extremities and impending pulse disappearance, place salt in the umbilicus and smoke with moxa. After awakening from moxibustion, administer medicine, carefully analyzing the Cold, Heat, Yin, and Yang. Another type is Gan Huoluan (Dry Cholera), characterized by excruciating abdominal pain and fierce progression, with neither vomiting nor diarrhea, known as Jiaochangsha (Intestinal Twisting Miasma); inducing vomiting with salt water is a miraculous case method. As long as vomiting and diarrhea occur, the condition is not dangerous; strictly advise against drinking rice water or hot soup.
Huoxiang Zhengqi San: Guang Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Xiaqu (Bromus Medicated Leaven), Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Fupi (Areca Peel), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Chuanpu (Aucklandiae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Zaozi (Jujube).

(Previously known as Zhuxia Syndrome)
The origins of Xiexie (diarrhea) are divided into six theories: Deficiency, Dampness, Cold, Phlegm, Food, and Heat. The name "Wu Xie" (Five Diarrheas, where dampness transforms into five types) is transmitted from the *Neijing* (Inner Canon) (including Tangxie [soft stool], Lixi [dysentery], Dongxie [sloshing diarrhea], and Huaxie [slippery diarrhea]), and the essence of "San Xu" (Three Deficiencies) is the secret formula of ancient sages. Dietary injury damages the Spleen, causing deficiency and failure to transform; sexual excess damages the Kidney, leading to extreme Kidney Deficiency. Kidney Deficiency naturally fails to store and secure; anger damages the Liver, causing Wood to overact on Earth (Liver Deficiency leads to Liver Wood attacking Spleen Earth). Strengthening the Spleen and promoting diuresis is the main prescription; drying Dampness and lifting Yang cannot be omitted. The formula contains Shaoyao (Peony Root), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Qu (Medicated Leaven), Pu (Aucklandiae Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Root), Cheqian (Plantago Seed), Er Ling (Poria and Polyporus), Mutong (Akebia Stem), and Xie Er Zhu (Cangzhu and Baizhu). Intestinal borborygmus and abdominal pain clearly belong to Fire; add Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Lian (Coptis Rhizome), and Qin (Scutellaria Root) to the formula. Abdominal pain absent indicates Dampness; add Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), and Ychen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba). Undigested food in stool indicates Deficiency; add Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Biandou (Lablab Bean), Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), and Renshen (Ginseng Root). Intermittent desire to defecate or variable frequency indicates Phlegm; use Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) and Tianxing (Arisaema Rhizome). Severe pain followed by diarrhea that stops the pain indicates Food Stagnation; increase Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit). Mild diarrhea with slight abdominal pain indicates Cold Diarrhea; use Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome) and Sharen (Amomum Fruit). New-onset diarrhea should be treated by purging and digesting food; chronic diarrhea should be treated by lifting and warming tonification. Chronic diarrhea with sinking also requires lifting; Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) and Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) are more effective. For Kidney Deficiency with downward slipping, use Sishen Wan (Four Spirits Pill); Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) and Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) address Wind. Ancient formulas exist for Deficiency and Chronic Diarrhea; take one spoonful of Yellow Earth powder mixed with water.

Mr. Chen said: When Spleen Yang is weak, Dampness accumulates in the Middle Jiao, leading to poor transformation; when Kidney Yin declines, control and retention fail, resulting in Xia Xie (mass diarrhea). Therefore, the Middle should rotate to transform, and the Lower should seal to store. Kidney Yang steams upward from below, allowing Spleen Yang to begin transforming. Mr. Wang considers undigested food after eating as a lack of Yang. Mr. Chen states: Heat overcoming Dampness steams, Qi injures people causing fatigue. Penile cysts indicate severe Damp-Heat sinking into the lower fu organs, distinct from penile orifice diseases in medical texts. Foot swelling indicates weak Yang and accumulated Dampness; treating the Stomach must assist in draining the Liver to restrain its excessive overaction. Zhang Zhongjing said: A string-like pulse indicates Stomach disease; if the pulse becomes large, the disease progresses. The Spleen organ benefits from tonification to become healthy; the Stomach腑 (Fu organ) benefits from dispersing to become clear. The Spleen should ascend, the Stomach should descend. Bitter-Cold herbs must be assisted by Wind herbs; this is the principle of Li Dongyuan. Chronic diarrhea inevitably damages the Kidney; Bawei Chengqi Tang draws Yang from Yin. Watery diarrhea with lower abdominal fullness: the lower abdomen belongs to the Jueyin Liver Meridian. Liver loss of free flow requires Wuling San to promote diuresis and guide out Dampness, imitating the ancients' metaphor of "urgently opening branch rivers."
He Shutian said: Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) is the pivot of the Three Yangs, housing Ministerial Fire. Wind and Fire stir the Stomach to rot and ripen grains. Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) is the pivot of the Three Yins, housing Dragon Fire. Steaming the zang-fu organs to transport waste, the Stomach's reception and the Spleen's distribution are all operations of Fire. However, without Thunder hidden and Dragon tamed (Water and Fire harmonizing), how can there be no Dryness, no Dampness, no冒 (mist/cloud)? Understanding the harm of blazing fire above requires Earth to settle and Water to be safe, thus avoiding flooding and the harm of Clear Qi sinking below. Thus it is said: The treatment of Five Diarrheas lies in peace. For Water and Fire, clear their source and elevate the embankment; for Earth dams, block their flow.
