Note: This syndrome is purely related to liver qi, with wood qi rushing chaotically, originating from yang loss and cold water. Therefore, Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos) and Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) are used to drain Gui Water (Kidney Water) and soothe Yi Wood (Liver Wood), while Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) and Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) tonify spleen essence to nourish liver blood.
If burning needle therapy induces sweating, and the needle site becomes cold, presenting as nodular redness, Ben Tun (Rushing Pig) syndrome will definitely occur, with qi rushing from the lower abdomen to the heart. Moxibustion should be applied to each nodule (one moxa cone per nodule), and Guizhi Jia Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction with Added Cinnamon Twig) should be administered.
Guizhi Jia Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction with Added Cinnamon Twig)
Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (6 qian) Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) (3 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (2 qian, honey-fried) Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (3 qian) Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) (4 pieces) Decoct in water and take orally. Note: After sweating, yang deficiency and sinking spleen earth cause unsmooth liver wood qi, leading to Ben Tun (Rushing Pig) attacks. Therefore, increased Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) is used to soothe wind-wood and descend the rushing qi of Ben Tun.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage), if the pulse is floating and the physician uses fire methods to force sweating, causing Yang collapse, it will definitely lead to fright, mania, restlessness, and inability to lie still. It should be treated with Guizhi Qu Shaoyao Jia Shuqi Longgu Muli Jiuni Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction without Peony plus Chinese Tallow Tree Bud, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell Rescue the Lost Yang Decoction).
Guizhi Qu Shaoyao Jia Shuqi Longgu Muli Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction without Peony plus Chinese Tallow Tree Bud, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell Decoction)
Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (3 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (2 qian) Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) (4 pieces) Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (3 qian) Muli (Concha Ostreae) (4 qian) Longgu (Os Draconis) (3 qian) Shuqi (Flos Cinnamomi Cassiae) (2 qian) First decoct Shuqi (Flos Cinnamomi Cassiae), then add other herbs, decoct, and take warm. Note: Excessive sweating causes Yang collapse, allowing Minister Fire to soar, causing the soul and spirit to lose their home, thus generating fright; turbid qi rushes upward, transforming into foul turbidity, blocking the heart palace, thus generating mania. Therefore, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) are used to soothe liver wood and tonify the middle, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) tonify spleen earth and descend rebellion, Shuqi (Flos Cinnamomi Cassiae) vomits out rot and stasis to treat mania, and Longgu (Os Draconis) and Muli (Concha Ostreae) astringe the soul and spirit to stop fright.
For water reversal syndrome mistakenly treated with purgation, followed by burning needle therapy causing irritability, it should be treated with Guizhi Gancao Longgu Muli Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell Decoction).
Guizhi Gancao Longgu Muli Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell Decoction)
Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (1 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (2 qian) Longgu (Os Draconis) (3 qian) Muli (Concha Ostreae) (3 qian) Decoct in water and take orally. Note: Fire reversal and mistaken purgation deplete interior Yang, and subsequent burning needle sweating depletes exterior Yang. The spirit qi separates from its root, causing irritability. Therefore, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) are used to soothe Yi Wood (Liver Wood) and tonify the middle jiao, while Longgu (Os Draconis) and Muli (Concha Ostreae) astringe spirit qi to remove irritability.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage) after eight or nine days, if purgation was performed, resulting in chest fullness, irritability, fright, dysuria, delirium, generalized edema, and inability to turn the body, it should be treated with Chaihu Jia Longgu Muli Tang (Bupleurum Plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction).
Chaihu Jia Longgu Muli Tang (Bupleurum Plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction)
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Longgu (Os Draconis) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos) Qiandan (Mineral Lead Carbonate) Muli (Concha Ostreae) Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) (each 1.5 qian)
Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) (2 pieces) Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (2 qian) Decoct in water, add Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) near the end and boil for two or three boils, then take warm. Note: Purgation damages middle qi, causing damp spleen earth and stagnant liver wood, with Gallbladder Fire rushing upward. Therefore, Dazao (Fructus Jujubae), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), and Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos) are used to tonify spleen earth and drain dampness, Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) drain fire and soothe liver wood, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) descend rebellious qi and turbidity, and Longgu (Os Draconis), Muli (Concha Ostreae), and Qiandan (Mineral Lead Carbonate) astringe the soul and calm rebellion.
When the disease is in the Yang level, sweating should have been used to resolve it. Instead, cold water was sprayed or poured on the patient. The heat is trapped and cannot escape, causing greater irritability, goosebumps on the skin, a desire to drink water but no actual thirst. Wenli San (Clam Shell Powder) should be taken. If not cured, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) should be given. For Cold-Excess Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) syndrome without heat signs, Sanwu Xiaoxiongtang (Three-Ingredient Minor Chest Binding Decoction) should be given, or Baisan (White Powder) may also be taken.
Wenli San (Clam Shell Powder)
Wenli (Concha Meretricis) (1 qian) Grind into powder, mix with boiling water, and take orally. Note: Irritability, heat, and thirst are caused by retained water internally. Therefore, Wenli (Concha Meretricis) is used to promote urination and relieve thirst.
Baisan (White Powder)
Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) (4.2 qian) Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) (4.2 qian) Badou (Semen Crotonis) (1.2 qian, husked, heart removed, stir-fried until black) Each remaining ingredient is ground into powder separately. Mix with white rice drink (millet gruel) and take 0.8 qian. Reduce dose for weak patients. Disease located above the diaphragm will likely cause vomiting; disease located below the diaphragm will likely cause diarrhea. If no diarrhea occurs, take one cup of hot porridge. If diarrhea persists, take one cup of cold porridge. Note: Cold pathogen rebels upward, excess binds the chest and diaphragm, lung stagnation generates heat. Therefore, Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) and Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) are used to clear and descend deficient heat, while Badou (Semen Crotonis) warms and breaks excess cold.
In Yangming Bing (Yangming Disease), with spontaneous sweating, if sweating is induced again and urination is naturally frequent, it is considered that internal fluids are exhausted. Although stool is hard, it cannot be purged. One must wait for the patient's natural urge to defecate, and Mi Jian Dao (Honey Suppository) method should be used to facilitate passage. Tu Gua Gen (Root of Trichosanthes Kirilowii) or Da Zhu Dan Chi (Large Pig Gallbladder Juice) can also be used as suppositories.
Mi Jian Dao Fang (Honey Suppository Formula)
Honey (1 cup) Single ingredient. Place in a copper vessel, simmer gently over low heat until slightly thickened like malt syrup. Stir constantly to prevent burning. When it can be formed into pills, shape by hand into suppositories with a pointed tip, about the thickness of a finger and two cun long. Shape quickly while hot; it hardens when cold. Insert into the anus, hold buttocks tightly together, and remove when the urge to defecate arises.
Zhu Dan Bian Fang (Pig Gallbladder Juice Formula)
Zhu Dan (Vesica Bilei Sus) (1 piece) Single ingredient. Extract juice, mix with a little vinegar, and instill into the anus. After about the time of one meal, stool should pass.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage), after taking herbal medicine, if diarrhea persists, epigastric fullness and hardness occur, and after taking Xiexin Tang (Drain the Epigastrium Decoction), further purgation with other drugs fails to stop the diarrhea. If the physician treats with Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction), the diarrhea worsens.
Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) regulates the middle jiao, but this diarrhea is in the lower jiao. Chishizhi Yuyuliang Tang (Red Kaolin and Hematite Decoction) should be used. If diarrhea persists, promoting urination is indicated.
Chishizhi Yuyuliang Tang (Red Kaolin and Hematite Decoction)
Chishizhi (Kaolin) Yuyuliang (Limonitum) (each 2 liang 6 qian) Water 3.5 cups, decoct to 1 cup, take orally, three times daily. Note: Diarrhea is due to slipping and insecurity of the lower jiao. Therefore, Chishizhi (Kaolin) and Yuyuliang (Limonitum) are used to secure the slipping of the lower jiao, so that diarrhea can stop.
In Shaoyin Bing (Shaoyin Disease) after two or three days, if there is sore throat, Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) may be given. If not cured, Jiegeng Tang (Platycodon Decoction) should be given.
Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction)
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (6 qian) Water 3 cups, decoct to 1 cup, divide into two doses. Note: In Shaoyin disease, water qi is excessive, and both Minister Fire and Sovereign Fire rise. The two fires rebel upward. Therefore, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) is used to drain heat and relieve urgency.
Jiegeng Tang (Platycodon Decoction)
Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) (3 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (6 qian) Water 3 cups, decoct to 1 cup, divide into two doses. Note: Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) is added to descend rebellion and open stagnation.
In Shaoyin Bing (Shaoyin Disease), if there is sore throat, Banxia San Ji Tang (Pinellia Powder and Decoction) should be used.
Banxia San Ji Tang (Pinellia Powder and Decoction)
Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (equal parts) Grind into powder. Mix with white rice drink and take 3 qian, three times daily. If unable to take powder, boil water seven times, add 3 qian of powder, boil three more times, let cool slightly, and swallow slowly in small amounts. Note: Turbid yin rebels upward, striking the throat, causing pain. Therefore, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) are used to descend rebellious qi, and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) relieves urgency.
In Shaoyin Bing (Shaoyin Disease), if the throat is injured and sores form, preventing speech and voice production, Kujiu Tang (Bitter Wine Decoction) should be used.
Kujiu Tang (Bitter Wine Decoction)
Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) Ji Zi (Ovi Albumen) (1 egg, yolk removed) Wash Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), cut seven pieces the size of a jujube pit into fourteen slices. Soak in Kujiu (vinegar). Place eggshell in a knife ring, set over fire, boil three times. Strain, hold in mouth and swallow slowly. Repeat if not cured. (Kujiu is vinegar). Note: Cold water rises excessively, fire is excessive and injures the throat, causing sores and inability to speak. Metal (Lung) is punished by fire, causing voice loss. Therefore, Kujiu (vinegar) resolves knots and reduces swelling, Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) descends rebellion and drives out turbidity, and Ji Zi Bai (Ovi Albumen) clears the lung and restores voice.
In Shaoyin Bing (Shaoyin Disease) with diarrhea, sore throat, chest fullness, and irritability, Zhufu Tang (Pig Skin Decoction) should be used.
Zhufu Tang (Pig Skin Decoction)
Zhufu (Cutis et Corium Porcinum) (4 liang) Water 7 cups, decoct to 3 cups. Add Baimi (White Honey) 7 qian and Mifen (Rice Flour) 4 qian. Cook until fragrant. Divide into two or three doses. (Zhufu is pig skin). Note: Cold water insults spleen earth, liver and spleen sink and stagnate, gallbladder and stomach rebel, and Minister Fire flares upward. Therefore, Zhufu (Cutis et Corium Porcinum) and Baimi (White Honey) clear metal (lung) to stop pain, moisten dryness to remove irritability, and Mifen (Rice Flour) stops diarrhea and astringes loose stools.
In Shaoyin Bing (Shaoyin Disease) with Si Ni (Four Extremities Cold), if the patient has cough, palpitations, dysuria, abdominal pain, or heaviness in the anus during diarrhea, Sini San (Counterflow Toxin Powder) should be used.
Sini San (Counterflow Toxin Powder)
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (1 liang) Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) (1 liang) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) (1 liang) Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) (1 liang) Grind into powder. Mix with white rice drink and take, two to three times daily. For cough, add Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) and Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis) 5 qian each, which also treats diarrhea. For palpitations, add Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 5 qian. For dysuria, add Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos) 5 qian. For abdominal pain, add Paofuzi (Prepared Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) 1 piece. For heaviness in the anus during diarrhea, first decoct Xiebai (Bulbus Allii Macrostemonis) in water, strain, add the powder to the decoction, boil again, and take warm. Note: This syndrome is generally due to spleen earth stagnation and liver wood invasion. Therefore, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) and Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) are used to tonify spleen earth and drain stagnation, while Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) and Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) soothe liver wood and dispel wind.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage), if the pulse is faint and extremities are cold, and after seven or eight days the skin is cold and the patient is restless without any peace, this is Zang Jue (Organ Cold Reversal), not Hui Jue (Roundworm Cold Reversal). Patients with Hui Jue (Roundworm Cold Reversal) typically vomit roundworms. Now, if the patient is quiet but occasionally irritable, this is because of cold organs, causing roundworms to move up into the diaphragm, hence the irritability, which stops after a moment. If vomiting occurs after eating, followed by irritability, it is because roundworms smell food and come out; the patient will likely vomit roundworms spontaneously. Hui Jue (Roundworm Cold Reversal) should be treated with Wumei Wan (Mume Pill).
Wumei Wan (Mume Pill) (Also treats chronic diarrhea)
Wumei (Fructus Mume) (93 pieces) Xixin (Herba Asari) (6 qian) Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis) (1 liang) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (1.6 liang) Shuzhao (Semen Zanthoxyli) (4 qian, stir-fried) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (4 qian) Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (6 qian) Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (6 qian) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) (6 qian) Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) (6 qian) Grind each into powder. Soak Wumei (Fructus Mume) in bitter wine overnight, remove pits, steam over rice, mash into paste. Mix with medicines until uniform. Add refined honey, pound together one thousand times. Form pills the size of tung seeds. Take before meals, mixed with white rice drink, ten pills at a time, three times daily. Gradually increase to twenty pills. Note: Hui Jue (Roundworm Cold Reversal) occurs because cold organs cannot settle the roundworms. Therefore, Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis) and Xixin (Herba Asari) kill roundworms, stop vomiting, and descend rebellious qi; Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), and Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) tonify the middle, soothe liver wood, and moisten wind-dryness; Shuzhao (Semen Zanthoxyli) and Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) warm water and lower cold; Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) drain fire and clear upper heat.
After a major illness recovers, if the patient likes to sleep and remains lethargic for a long time, it is due to cold in the stomach. Pills should be used to warm it; Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) is suitable.
Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) (See formula in Huoluan section)
After Shanghan (Cold Damage) resolves, if the patient is weak and emaciated, short of breath, and has rebellious qi with nausea, Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) should be used.
Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction)
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (8 qian) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) (2 qian) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) (1.3 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (1 qian, honey-fried) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis) (3 qian) Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae) (4 qian) Zhuye (Folium Bambusae) (10 leaves) Water 3 cups, decoct to 1.5 cups. Strain, add rice, cook until half-done. Remove rice when decoction is ready. Take warm, three times daily. Note: Fire and Metal do not descend, lung heat stagnates and generates. Therefore, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) clears metal and moistens dryness, while Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae), and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) tonify the middle and descend rebellion.
After a major illness recovers, if recurrence is caused by overexertion, Zhishi Zhizi Tang (Immature Bitter Orange and Gardenia Decoction) should be used. If there is retained food, add Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) equivalent to five or six boqi (chess pieces).
Zhishi Zhizi Chi Tang (Immature Bitter Orange, Gardenia, and Fermented Soybean Decoction)
Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) (2 qian) Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) (5 pieces) Chichi (Semen Sojae Praeparatum) (a pinch) First, use Qingjiangshui (Clear Fermented Rice Water) 3 cups, boil empty until 2 cups remain. Add Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) and Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), decoct to 1 cup. Add Chichi (Semen Sojae Praeparatum) and boil five or six boils. Take. Cover to induce slight sweating. If there is retained food, add Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 1.5 qian. Qingjiangshui is the water from washing rice. Note: In recurrence due to exertion, turbid yin condenses, clear qi stagnates, interior heat regenerates, and stuffiness recurs. This is because the middle qi is newly deficient and easily injured. Therefore, Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) drains fullness, Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) clears stagnant heat, and Chichi (Semen Sojae Praeparatum) disperses stagnant qi.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage) Yin-Yang Yi (Yin-Yang Exchange) disease, the patient has heavy body, shortness of breath, lower abdominal urgency, possibly pulling tendons in the genitals into spasm, heat rushing to the chest, heavy head unwilling to lift, visual disturbances, and stiffness in knees and shins. Shao Kun San (Burnt Underwear Powder) should be used.
Shao Kun San (Burnt Underwear Powder)
Take woman's underwear from the crotch area, near the anterior genitals, cut off, burn to ash, grind into powder. Mix with water and take 1-2 qian. Cure when urination is smooth and glans penis swells slightly.
For women's disease, take man's underwear. Note: After new recovery from Shanghan (Cold Damage), sexual intercourse between men and women transmits yin pathogens, called Yin-Yang Yi (Yin-Yang Exchange). Therefore, Shao Kun San (Burnt Underwear Powder) is used. Through resonance of similar qi, yin-cold is drained downward, restoring the original state of harmony.
