In cold damage and febrile diseases, a floating and surging pulse is auspicious; if a deep, minute, choppy, or small pulse appears, the symptoms contradict the pulse, indicating certain peril. After sweating resolves the pathogen, the pulse should be calm and the body cool; if restlessness and heat appear, it indicates that the pathogen has not diminished due to sweating, making treatment difficult. If a yang syndrome presents with a yin pulse, life is in imminent danger; if a yin syndrome presents with a yang pulse, although the condition is severe, there is no great harm. In malaria, the pulse should be wiry; wiry and slow often indicate cold, while wiry and rapid often indicate heat, which is natural. If a choppy or scattered pulse appears, the pathogen has not yet resolved, and the healthy qi has declined, so life may be hard to preserve. In wind-stroke, a floating and slow pulse is suitable; a firm, large, and rapid pulse is adverse. Fatigue damaging the spleen and stomach should present with a weak and deficient pulse as favorable. If spontaneous sweating occurs but the pulse is instead rapid and restless, it is adverse. In diarrhea and dysentery causing interior deficiency, a deep, small, slippery, or weak pulse is favorable. If instead a solid, large, floating, or rapid pulse appears, the body will surely develop fever and form an ominous condition. In vomiting and reverse flow of food, due to spleen deficiency with phlegm, a floating and slippery pulse is favorable. If a deep, rapid, thin, or choppy pulse appears, it indicates insufficient qi and dried fluids, eventually leading to death from intestinal obstruction. Cholera presenting with a yang pulse is good. If a choppy pulse appears, it is caused by temporary confusion of clear and turbid qi and discontinuity of the pulse, not necessarily a death omen. If the pulse is hidden and invisible, limbs are cold and inverted, the tongue curls, and the scrotum retracts, this indicates extreme yin-cold, a critical condition. Cough is a lung disease, where a floating pulse is suitable. If accompanied by a soggy pulse, the illness will recede. If deep-hidden and tight pulses appear, they contradict the condition, indicating deep-seated disease. Yang asthma is mostly excess, attributed to wind and phlegm, where a floating and slippery pulse is favorable. If a deep and choppy pulse appears with cold limbs, it is yin-asthma attributed to cold and deficiency, an untreatable adverse condition. In fire-heat syndromes, a surging and rapid pulse is suitable. If a weak and minute pulse appears, the syndrome and pulse contradict, the root is detached, and medication cannot be applied. In bone-steaming heat, the pulse is rapid and deficient. If a choppy and small pulse appears, it is incurable. In consumptive disease, a deficient pulse is suitable. If the left and right guan positions are wiry, it is liver wood overacting on spleen earth. If a thin and rapid pulse appears, it is yin deficiency with flourishing fire, attacking metal of the lungs, making it untreatable. In various blood-loss syndromes, the pulse must be knifelike (Kou). If slow and small, it is still favorable; if rapid and large, it is worrisome. Blood stasis is a tangible excess syndrome; a firm, large, and solid pulse suits the condition. If deep, choppy, and minute, it involves deficiency. Since the blood cannot move on its own, and harsh agents are difficult to apply, how can rapid recovery be expected? In the three consumptions, dryness-heat is excessive, so only a rapid and large pulse is auspicious. If a fine, minute, short, or choppy pulse appears, death is incurable. In stranguria and urinary retention, the nose color must be yellow; if the pulse is solid and large, purgative drugs can be used. If a choppy and small pulse appears, it indicates failure of essence and qi transformation, and death is imminent. In mania and madness, a floating and surging pulse is auspicious; if deep and rapid, the illness cannot be saved. In epilepsy, a floating and moderate pulse is suitable; if deep, small, rapid, and solid, the disease is deep. Or if only a wiry pulse appears, the true organ pulse of the liver without stomach qi is seen, how can one hope for regeneration? In heart and abdominal pain, a slow and thin pulse is suitable. If floating and large, it indicates middle deficiency and abundant pathogen, preventing quick success. Hernias belong to liver disease, where the pulse must be wiry and urgent. A firm and urgent pulse indicates survival, while a weak and urgent pulse indicates certain death. In jaundice with damp-heat, a surging, rapid, floating, and large pulse is suitable. Once a minute and choppy pulse appears, deficiency and decline are severe, and no medicine can treat it. In swelling and distension, a floating, large, surging, and solid pulse is suitable; if deep, thin, and minute, the syndrome is excess while the pulse is deficient, making survival unlikely. In accumulation and gathering, a solid and strong pulse allows for survival; if deep and thin, it is deficiency, true qi is exhausted, and it is untreatable. In sudden evil causing abdominal distension, a tight and thin pulse indicates survival, while a floating and large pulse indicates peril. The "ghost" pulse is uneven on left and right, suddenly large and small, suddenly rapid and slow. For carbuncles and sores before ulceration, a surging and large pulse is suitable; after ulceration, a surging and large pulse is contraindicated. When lung abscess is formed, the cun position is rapid and solid. In lung flaccidity, the pulse is rapid and powerless. In carbuncle-flaccidity with white complexion, a short and choppy pulse is suitable; if a rapid and large pulse appears, qi is damaged and blood is lost. In intestinal abscess with excess-heat, a slippery and rapid pulse is suitable; if deep and thin without root, death is evident.
