Treatise
The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: "When the Yin pulse beats forcefully and differs distinctly from the Yang pulse, it is called pregnancy" (meaning the Yin pulse is palpable at the wrist, with a distinct Yang pulse within). This indicates that blood and Qi are in harmony, with Yang exerting its influence and Yin transforming. The relationship between husband and wife is akin to Heaven and Earth. The way of Heaven and Earth is that only when Yin and Yang harmonize can all things be nurtured; similarly, only when Yin and Yang harmonize between husband and wife can male and female offspring be born. Therefore, those desiring an heir must first regulate the woman's meridians. Once the meridians are regulated, blood and Qi will be in harmony; when blood and Qi are in harmony, myriad diseases will not arise, and one can joyfully have children. The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: "If the pulse of the Hand Shaoyin (Heart Meridian) moves vigorously, it indicates pregnancy." This is because the Hand Shaoyin is the Heart pulse, and the Heart governs the blood vessels. Furthermore, the Kidney is the gate of the womb and the house of the fetus; if the Kidney pulse at the Chi position remains unceasing upon pressure, pregnancy should be suspected. It is also stated: "In the first month of pregnancy, the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian nourishes the fetus; in the second month, the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian; in the third month, the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian; in the fourth month, the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian; in the fifth month, the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian; in the sixth month, the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian; in the seventh month, the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian; in the eighth month, the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian; in the ninth month, the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian; in the tenth month, the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian." Thus, each meridian nourishes for thirty days. If the relevant meridian is deficient or excessive when it should be nourishing, the pregnancy becomes unstable, potentially leading to bleeding and miscarriage. The twelve meridities of the hands and feet differ in their abundance or deficiency of Qi and Blood. For instance, the Jueyin meridities have little Qi and much Blood; the Taiyin and Shaoyin meridities have little Blood and much Qi; the Shaoyang meridities have much Qi and little Blood; the Yangming meridities have abundant Qi and Blood. The method for stabilizing the fetus involves regulating according to the specific meridian of each month, observing the excess or deficiency of Qi and Blood, thereby preventing miscarriage. If wind-cold invades causing other symptoms, treatment should follow specific protocols accordingly. *Jiyao* states: "When treating diseases related to pregnancy and childbirth, one should discuss them from the perspective of the Jueyin Meridian, avoiding injury to the Stomach Qi and the Upper and Middle Jiao. This is known as the 'Three Prohibitions': do not induce sweating, do not purge, and do not promote urination." Inducing sweating resembles complications from premature purgation in Cold Damage disorders. Promoting bowel movements causes the rapid pulse to disturb the Spleen. Promoting urination depletes internal fluids, leading to dryness in the Stomach. Formulating prescriptions without violating these three prohibitions allows Ying and Wei to harmonize naturally, stopping chills and fever; these are the standards physicians must adhere to. Pregnant women should early on abstain from desires, nurture the fetal origin, maintain a calm rather than agitated temperament, keep the body active rather than sedentary, consume cool rather than hot foods, wear warm rather than cold clothing, avoid standing, sitting, walking, or lying down for too long, and eliminate rich, greasy, fried, spicy, salty, sour foods, fruits, fish, shellfish, fox, rabbit, pigeon, sparrow, etc. This prevents conditions such as fetal leakage, fetal pain, threatened abortion, edema, eclampsia, malpresentation, breech birth, and intrauterine fetal death. Danxi said: "Women with difficult labor often failed to restrain sexual desire during the eighth and ninth months, resulting in Qi and Blood deficiency." Records state: "Anciently, pregnant women did not sleep on their sides, sit askew, stand limping, eat improper foods, meat cut incorrectly, or sit on mats arranged improperly; they did not look at lewd sights, listen to obscene sounds, or speak arrogantly. At night, blind men recited poetry to recount righteous matters, so that the child born would be handsome and talented beyond others." This is what ancients called prenatal education. Can pregnant women not be cautious?
Appendix: Treatise on Seeking an Heir
Those desiring an heir must first check if the woman's menstrual cycle is regular. If irregular, medication must be used to regulate it. Once regular, human intercourse should be timed according to specific methods to ensure conception does not miss the optimal window. A rhyme states: "Among thirty days, there are two and a half good days; calculate carefully around the twenty-eighth or twenty-ninth day. When red flow covers the ground, it is the auspicious time; after Jin-Shui passes, efforts are in vain. Wasting effort during chaos is futile; searching under trees for remaining red is useless. If you understand that flowers can bear fruit, why worry that cypress trees won't form clusters?" This refers to the time just after menstruation ends, when Jin-Shui begins to generate, the uterus opens, and it is the moment for fertilization and conception, a time of perfect harmony. After this period, the uterus closes and cannot conceive. However, the distinction between male and female has subtle secrets. Intercourse on the first, third, or fifth day after menstruation ends results in a boy; on the second, fourth, or sixth day, a girl. Beyond these times, infertility may occur. It is also said: "If Yin blood arrives first and Yang essence follows, with Zong Qi arriving, the blood opens to wrap the essence, Yin outside and Yang inside, forming the Kan trigram image, resulting in a male. If Yang essence enters first and Yin blood follows, with Heng Qi assisting, the essence opens to wrap the blood, Yin inside and Yang outside, forming the Li trigram image, resulting in a female." ...
Pulse Diagnosis
The *Mai Jing* states: "If the three positions of the woman's pulse are floating and sinking equally normal, and unceasing upon pressure, it indicates pregnancy." In early pregnancy, the Cun position is slightly small, with five breaths per pulse beat; by the third month, the Chi position becomes rapid. A slippery and rapid pulse that disperses upon heavy pressure indicates three months of pregnancy. A pulse that does not disperse upon heavy pressure but is rapid without slipperiness indicates five months. In the fourth month of pregnancy, a faster pulse on the left indicates a male, on the right a female; both fast indicates twins. Another method: obtaining a Taiyin pulse indicates a male; a Taiyang pulse indicates a female. Another method: a deep and solid left hand pulse indicates a male; a floating and large right hand pulse indicates a female; both large and solid indicate two boys. Another method: both Chi pulses floating (should be deep) indicate two boys; otherwise, a girl is mistaken for a boy. Both Chi pulses deep (should be floating) indicate two girls; otherwise, a boy is mistaken for a girl. This is the theory of mixed gender forms.
If a pregnant woman's pulse deviates from the standard and floats, accompanied by abdominal pain radiating to the lower back, it indicates impending labor. Another method: if the pulse deviates from the standard, feeling it at midnight means delivery by noon. In the sixth or seventh month, a firm, large, strong, wiry, or tight pulse indicates survival; a deep and fine pulse indicates death. In the sixth or seventh month, sudden diarrhea of over a dou of water causes the fetus to lean and miscarry due to premature rupture of membranes (isolated fluid discharge). The Cun position pulse is surging and choppy; surging indicates Qi, choppy indicates Blood. Qi moving in the Dantian warms the form; choppy below indicates a cold fetus like ice. If Yang Qi survives, Yin Qi ends (Surging Qi means life; Choppy Blood means death). To distinguish Yin and Yang, the lower body becomes rigid. If it is a Yang meridian, blood stasis accumulates like a cup (Yin indicates dead fetus; Yang indicates blood stasis). Question: In twin pregnancy, if one dies and one lives, and the physician expels the dead fetus, the illness resolves and the mother is saved. How to distinguish by pulse? Master says: The Cun position pulse shows balanced Wei Qi and slow Ying Qi, Yang exerts influence and Yin transforms, Essence is abundant, Yin and Yang are both prosperous, thus knowing it is twins. Now, the Shaoyin pulse is slightly tight, blood becomes turbid and coagulated, nourishment is insufficient, the fetus is prematurely aborted, lower abdomen is cold and full, knee and patella painful, heavy waist difficult to rise, this is a Blood pathology. If not removed early, it harms the mother and loses the fetus. If a woman's menses stop and she is pregnant, but the pulse is wiry, fear of massive hemorrhage follows, indicating failure to sustain the pregnancy. (Massive hemorrhage refers to heavy bleeding.)
Methods
Danxi said: Women infertile due to Blood deficiency unable to grasp Essence are often misdiagnosed by vulgar doctors as Uterine Deficiency-Cold, treated with acrid-hot medicines, boiling the organs, causing Blood and Qi to boil, bringing immediate disaster. Those using Mugwort (Ai Ye) do not know its extreme heat; applied externally it works, but internally it rises, and overdose causes toxicity. Who bears the blame?
For thin, weak women with dry, astringent uteri, nourish Yin and Blood using Siwu Tang plus Xiangfu and Huangqin. For obese individuals with excess fat blocking the uterus, resolve dampness and dry phlegm using Nanxing, Banxia, Chuanxiong, Huashi, Fangfeng, Qianghuo (some versions have Cangzhu, no Fangfeng/Qianghuo) or Daotan Tang.
Miscarriage is due to Qi and Blood deficiency failing to nourish the fetal origin, causing natural expulsion, like dry branches dropping fruit or withered trunks shedding flowers. Anger injuring emotions stirs internal fire, also causing miscarriage, like wind shaking trees or people hitting branches. Fire destroys matter, a natural process; disease sources attributing it to Wind-Cold injuring the Zi Zang miss the true pathology. Generally, it belongs to Deficiency or Heat, treated according to severity.
A woman who consistently miscarries had a large, powerless left pulse, choppy upon heavy pressure, indicating Blood deficiency. Due to her youth, only Middle Qi was tonified to allow Blood to naturally nourish. Strong decoction of Baizhu Tang with one qian of Huangqin powder taken, up to three or four liang, resulted in preservation and live birth.
(Four methods from Danxi above)
Gutai Yin (Stabilize Fetus Decoction)
Shudihuang, Guishenwei, Renshen, Baishaoyao, Baizhu, Chuanxiong, Chenpi, Gancao.
Yang'erteng from mulberry tree (seven leaves, round ones. I suspect this refers to round mulberry leaves, commonly known as Sangluo; genuine Sangjisheng is especially good).
Add small amounts of Huanglian and Huangbai, with fifty to seventy glutinous rice grains, decoct and take. For Blood deficiency with instability, add Ejiao Zhu. For fetal Qi pain, add Suosha.
Antai Yin (Stabilize Fetus Decoction)
After conception, if fetal Qi feels unstable, mild abdominal pain, or lower back pain, or poor appetite, take this. Or take several doses continuously at five or six months.
Baizhu, Danggui, Baishaoyao, Shudihuang (each one qian), Renshen, Chuanxiong, Tiao Huangqin.
Chenpi (each half qian), Gancao, Sharen, Zisu (each three fen).

Antai Wan (Stabilize Fetus Pill)
Baizhu, Tiao Qin, Shenqu (stir-fried, equal parts).
Grind into fine powder, make pills with congee, take fifty pills each time with clear rice soup. Baizhu and Tiao Qin are the sacred medicines for stabilizing the fetus.
Danxi said: Heavenly movement never ceases, thus generating life endlessly. Chongweizi activates Blood and moves Qi, having the subtlety of nourishing Yin, named Yimu (Beneficial Mother) because it moves while tonifying. Thus it is said: Before birth, no stagnation; after birth, no deficiency.
Tiao Qin and Baizhu are sacred medicines for stabilizing the fetus. Vulgar people consider Huangqin cold and avoid it, wrongly believing warm-hot medicines nourish the fetus. They do not realize pregnancy requires clearing heat and nourishing Blood so Blood follows the meridians without reckless flowing, which truly nourishes the fetus. Huangqin must be selected as slender, dense, and substantial.
Suosha stabilizes the fetus because it stops pain and moves Qi. (Sharen should not be used excessively in the eighth or ninth month.)
Cravings during pregnancy indicate deficiency of one Zang organ. Craving sour substances indicates Liver deficiency, where the Liver can only nourish the fetus but is itself deficient.
Fetal movement caused by Fire forcing the fetus upward, causing wheezing, urgently requires Tiao Qin and Xiangfu.
Taimou (Fetal Leakage) refers to bleeding during pregnancy, belonging to Qi deficiency with Heat. Use Siwu Tang plus Ejiao Zhu, Baizhu, Tiao Qin, Suosha (stir-fried), Xiangfu (charred black), add glutinous rice, decoct in plain water.
Another prescription for Taimou bleeding.

For fetal pain, use Danggui Dihuang Tang (Liangfang).
Danggui (one qian), Shudihuang (two qian). Finely chopped, decoct in one and a half cups of water until one cup remains, take warm.
For various heart and abdominal pains, if a pregnant woman suffers accidental injury, abdominal discomfort, falls from height, is crushed by heavy objects, disturbing the fetal origin, unbearable pain and bleeding, this is excellent. (Chanbao)
Sharen any amount, stir-fry with peel slightly, do not let it burn completely black, remove peel, take kernel, grind to powder, mix with hot wine. Non-drinkers can use rice drink, Ai Ye soup, or salt water. If fetal heat is felt, the fetus calms. This prescription is effective; pregnant women should always have it, regular use stabilizes fetus and facilitates birth.
For sudden heart pain and discomfort in the second or third month of pregnancy. (Chanbao)
Danggui (three qian), Ejiao (fried, two qian), Gancao (roasted, two qian), Congbai (four qian).
Finely chopped, divide into two doses, decoct each dose in two cups of water until one small cup remains, take warm.

Taizhong (Fetal Edema) refers to swelling of hands, feet, face, or whole body during pregnancy, belonging to excess Dampness. Use one he of Shanzhizi stir-fried, ground to powder, mix with rice soup. Pills also acceptable.
Ezu (Nausea of Pregnancy) refers to nausea and obstruction of diet during pregnancy, mostly treated from Phlegm, using Erchen Tang. Another method: make Baizhu into pills. (One says: Obese people have Phlegm, thin people have Heat.)
Banxia Fuling Tang treats Ezu with loss of appetite, vomiting, dizziness, lethargy and painful limbs, aversion to cold and spontaneous sweating.

(Danxi Medical Case)
A woman pregnant two months vomited and had dizziness. Doctor used Renshen, Baizhu, Chuanxiong, Chenpi, Fuling, condition worsened. Pulse wiry, worse on left. This is Ezu, provoked by anger. Indeed confirmed. Liver Qi rebellious, combined with fetal Qi, tonification with Renshen/Baizhu was inappropriate. Used Fuling Tang to deliver Yiqing Wan twenty-four pills, five doses slightly relieved. Pulse slightly rapid, mouth dry bitter, sour taste after eating. Suspected lingering Qi in diaphragm not fully moved. Used Chuanxiong, Chenpi, Zhizi, Shengjiang, Fuling decoction to deliver Yiqing Wan fifteen pills, cured. But sour taste and easy hunger indicated Liver Heat not settled. Used hot water to deliver Yiqing Wan twenty pills. After cure, both hands pulse平和 (harmonious), but Right very weak, fetus likely to abort. Now Liver Qi settled, could use Renshen/Baizhu to prevent, took one day then fetus aborted spontaneously.
