[Qian] The complexion is pale and lacks luster, the breath from the mouth is cold, there is no desire for food, vomiting of clear fluid occurs. It is indicated to tonify the Spleen, with Yihuang San (Benefit Yellow Powder) as the primary formula.
[Zhu] Vomiting of roundworms in winter is mostly due to deficiency-cold of the Stomach causing the worms to revolt and vomit. Use Qian's Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) added with three cloves (Dingxiang).
[Qian] Continuous vomiting of clear fluid belongs to Heart pain and Cold Stomach. Vomiting clear fluid accompanied by Heart pain indicates worm pain. Spitting out foamy water from the mouth indicates that worm pain will follow later.
[Zhu] Wan'an Gao (Ten Thousand Safety Plaster) treats vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting of milk. (Formula see "Vomiting" section.)
[Chen] For vomiting and diarrhea. Use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Chenpi (Tangerine Peel) and Houpo (Magnolia Bark) in equal proportions, decocted together. (Another method adds Chenpi, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Dazao (Jujube).)
For slipping and leaking of Zang-Fu organs. Use Sijunzi Tang added with Hezi (Chebula Fruit) 5 fen, taken down with rice drink.
[Qian] Huang Chengwu's son, aged two, suffered from diarrhea due to food injury. Other physicians administered astringents for more than ten days, resulting in greenish-white stools undigested milk and food, cool body temperature, frequent hiccupping, and lethargy. Everyone considered the condition critical and summoned Qian. Qian first administered Yihuang San and Bufei San (Tonify Lung Powder), three doses each. After three days, the body became warm and hiccupping ceased. Then, Baixia Zi (White Pill) was used to mildly purge, followed by three doses of Yipi San (Benefit Spleen Powder), after which the diarrhea stopped. Why is this so? The diarrhea originated from Spleen deficiency and food injury. Initially, purgatives were not used; the pathogen lingered for ten days, leading to excess above and deficiency below. The weakness of Spleen Qi led to the weakness of Lung Qi, as Spleen and Lung share a mother-son relationship. By tonifying the Spleen first, the Lung pathology recedes naturally, resulting in warmth and cessation of hiccupping. Only then should the injured accumulation be purged. One might ask: Why not purge first and then tonify? The answer is: Green stool indicates cold in the lower Zang-Fu. If purging is done first, it will cause severe deficiency. Now, by solidifying the Spleen Qi before purging, deficiency is avoided. Subsequent tonification ensures stability. (Yihuang San formula see "Pediatric General Principles".)
Wenzhong Wan (Warm Middle Pill) treats white diarrhea due to Stomach cold, abdominal pain, and borborygmus. (Formula see "Vomiting and Diarrhea".)
[Zhu] Green stool also indicates cold syndrome. Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) and Pingwei San (Calm the Stomach Powder) in equal proportions are suitable, mixed with honey water for administration.
[Tian] Green stool results from internal disharmony of Spleen Qi due to wind-stroke fright. Treatment should use Baizhu Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction).
[Li] In cases of severe diarrhea with thirst and desire to drink, regardless of whether the disease is new or chronic, Baizhu San is appropriate. Dysentery is treated similarly.
[Zhu] For pediatric summer diarrhea, Yihuang San is used. Diarrhea with yellow, red, or black stool indicates heat syndromes; Yi Yuan San (Benefit Primordial Powder) or Huangbai Wan (Phellodendron Pill) etc. are used.
[Qian] Shijunzi Wan (Quisqualis Pill) treats malnutrition emaciation, dysentery, and abdominal and hypochondriac fullness. (Formula see "Malnutrition" section.)
[Mai Jing] In children with green, unformed stools and sun-xie (undigested food in stool), if the pulse is small and hands/feet are cold, it is difficult to cure; if the pulse is small but hands/feet are warm, it is easy to cure.
