*Huangdi Neijing Suwen* records: The Yellow Emperor asked, "What is meant by changes occurring after a disease has formed?" Qibo replied, "Wind lingering can transform into cold-heat disorders; excessive heat can transform into Xiao Zhong (Middle Jiao Consumption); Qi rebellion can transform into Dian Ji (Epilepsy/Manic Disorder); long-standing wind can transform into Sun Xie (Undigested Food Diarrhea); wind invading the vessels can transform into Li Feng (Leprosy). The variations of diseases are countless." (From *Mai Yao Jing Wei Lun*) It is also stated: "Diseases of the Yang Ming channel originating from the Heart and Spleen involve unspoken difficulties [sexual dysfunction or emotional distress], and women experience amenorrhea. If it transmits to become Feng Xiao (Wind Consumption), or transmits to become Xi Ben (Breathful Accumulation), it is a death case that cannot be treated. Diseases of the Tai Yang channel manifest with chills and fever; downward transmission results in abscesses and swelling, as well as Wei Jue (Flaccidity and Cold Extremities). If it transmits to become Su Ze (Withered Dryness), or transmits to become Tui Shan (Scrotal Hernia). Disease of the Shao Yang channel manifests as shortness of Qi, frequent coughing, and frequent diarrhea. If it transmits to become Xin Che (Heart Palpitation/Tugging Pain), or transmits to become Ge (Diaphragmatic Obstruction). When both Yang Ming and Shao Yang channels are affected, the main symptoms are fright, back pain, frequent belching, and yawning; this is named Feng Jue (Wind Rebellion). When both Tai Yin and Shao Yang channels are affected, there is frequent distension, chest fullness, and frequent sighing. When both Tai Yang and Tai Yin channels are affected, it results in Pian Ku (Hemiplegia), Wei Yi (Flaccid Paralysis with Change), and inability to move the four limbs." (From *Yin Yang Bie Lun*)
The Yellow Emperor asked, "What is the mechanism behind the mutual transfer of cold and heat among the Zang and Fu organs?" Qibo replied, "When Kidney cold transfers to the Liver, it causes abscesses and shortness of Qi. When Spleen cold transfers to the Liver, it causes abscesses and tendon spasms. When Liver cold transfers to the Heart, it causes mania and diaphragmatic obstruction. When Heart cold transfers to the Lung, it causes Fei Xiao (Lung Consumption). In Fei Xiao, one drink yields two parts urine; this is a death case that cannot be treated. When Lung cold transfers to the Kidney, it causes Yong Shui (Gushing Water). Yong Shui is characterized by a non-tender abdomen; water Qi resides in the Large Intestine, making gurgling sounds when walking quickly, like a bag containing liquid; this is a disease of water accumulation. When Spleen heat transfers to the Liver, it causes fright and epistaxis. When Liver heat transfers to the Heart, it leads to death. When Heart heat transfers to the Lung, it transmits to become Ge Xiao (Diaphragm Consumption). When Lung heat transfers to the Kidney, it transmits to become Rou Jing (Flaccid Spasm). When Kidney heat transfers to the Spleen, it transmits to become deficiency, accompanied by intestinal rumbling and diarrhea; this is a death case that cannot be treated. When the Bao Organ [lower jiao blood chamber] heat transfers to the Bladder, it causes Lin syndrome [dysuria] and hematuria. When Bladder heat transfers to the Small Intestine, it causes blockage of the intestines, and upward steaming leads to mouth ulcers. When Small Intestine heat transfers to the Large Intestine, it causes Lu Jia [abdominal masses] and Chen [sinking hernia]. When Large Intestine heat transfers to the Stomach, it causes increased appetite but emaciation; this is also called Shi Yi (Food Transformation). When Stomach heat transfers to the Gallbladder, it is also called Shi Yi. When Gallbladder heat transfers to the Brain, it causes pungency in the nose and Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis). Bi Yuan is characterized by continuous discharge of turbid nasal mucus; if it transmits to cause epistaxis and blindness, it is due to Qi rebellion." (From *Qi Jue Lun*)
