[Prescription Verse] The carbuncle and deep abscess on the zygoma gradually take on a shape resembling a pomegranate. The pathogenesis involves wind-heat or accumulated heat in the Small Intestine Meridian. The carbuncle presents with redness, swelling, burning sensation, edema, and pain; the deep abscess presents with purple discoloration, diffuse swelling, hardness, numbness, and pain.
[Annotation] These two conditions arise at the tip of the zygomatic bone and belong to the Small Intestine Meridian, regardless of whether they are on the left or right side. Initially small, they gradually enlarge like a pomegranate. Those arising in the Yang aspect are caused by wind-heat; initially presenting with redness, swelling, burning sensation, edema, and pain, they suppurate after about seven days. This is called "Zygoma Carbuncle" (Quan Yang). The toxin is mild, the root is shallow, and it is easy to heal. Those arising in the Yin aspect are caused by accumulated heat internally; presenting with purple color, diffuse swelling, hardness, numbness, and pain, they suppurate after twenty-one days (three sevens). This is called "Zygoma Deep Abscess" (Quan Ju). The toxin is severe, the root is deep, and it is difficult to heal. For the initial stage of the carbuncle condition, Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin (Immortal Life Elixir) is suitable. For the initial stage of the deep abscess condition, Nei Shu Huang Lian Tang (Internal Draining Coptis Decoction) or Mai Ling Dan is suitable. All other internal and external treatment methods should follow the chapters on Carbuncles/Abscesses, Swollen Ulcers, and Ulcerated Lesions.
Formulas: Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin (Immortal Life Elixir), Nei Shu Huang Lian Tang (Internal Draining Coptis Decoction), Mai Ling Dan (see Chapter on Swollen Ulcers).
[Prescription Verse] Zygoma Ding (hard nodule) initially appears in the shape of millet grains. The condition arises from fire-toxin in the Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming. It is hard, with a depressed apex and a firm root, accompanied by alternating chills and fever, numbness, itching, and pain.
[Annotation] This condition occurs between the zygomatic bones and belongs to the Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming, regardless of the side. Initially, it resembles a small yellow blister like a millet grain, then becomes like a red bean, with a depressed, hard apex that feels like a Ding head upon pressure, accompanied by numbness, itching, and pain. It is often caused by excessive consumption of roasted foods and medicinal wine, leading to accumulated fire in the Stomach Meridian transforming into toxin. Initially, Chan Su Wan (Toad Venom Pill) is suitable, or Mai Ling Dan can be used to induce sweating. Subsequently, Huang Lian Xiao Du Yin (Coptis Detoxification Decoction) should be taken to clear heat and detoxify. External treatments are the same as those described in the Ding chapter. All Dings are rapid-onset conditions; immediate treatment is required upon the first sign. Delay allows fire-toxin to attack the Heart, causing confusion, delirious speech, and various malignant symptoms, often leading to death and untreatability.
Formulas: Chan Su Wan (Toad Venom Pill) (see Chapter on Ding Sores); Mai Ling Dan (see Chapter on Swollen Ulcers); Huang Lian Xiao Du Yin (Coptis Detoxification Decoction) (see Bai Hui Acupoint Deep Abscess of the Head).
[Prescription Verse] Mian Fa Du (Facial Spreading Toxin) arises at the Jia Che point. Initially few, it gradually increases to resemble red beans. It presents with swelling, hardness, redness, burning pain, and exudation of yellow fluid. The condition belongs to wind-heat invading the Yangming Meridian.
[Annotation] This condition arises between the bones at the Jia Che point on the face. It starts as one lesion and gradually develops into several, resembling red beans, with red color, burning pain, hardness similar to a Ding, and frequent exudation of yellow fluid. It is caused by wind-heat invading the Yangming Meridian and attacking upwards. Initially, Jing Fang Bai Du San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Decoction for Overcoming Toxins) is suitable to induce sweating. If Stomach Fire is excessive, manifesting as dry lips, thirst, and dry stool, Liang Ge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) should be taken immediately to purge heat, and applied externally with Qing Liang Xiao Du San (Cooling and Detoxifying Powder) for cure.
Formula: Liang Ge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder)
Composition: Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, raw and ground), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus, heart removed), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, raw), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) in equal parts.

[Prescription Verse] Qing Liang Xiao Du San dispels wind-heat. Ingredients include Bai Ji, Ru Xiang, Xiong Huang, Tian Hua Fen, She Xiang, Wu Yao, Shan Ci Gu, and Huang Bo. Grind and mix with egg white and honey to extinguish the toxin.
Another Formula: Jing Fang Bai Du San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Decoction for Overcoming Toxins) (see Nuchal Brain Abscess).
