Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, two liang, stir-fried with soil) Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, one liang, stir-fried with bran)
Wrap Chen Fan Si (aged rice) in lotus leaves, bake until dry, grind into powder, and use this powder as a binder to make pills.
This formula primarily governs the strengthening of the spleen and resolution of fullness.
It is a conditioning formula combining purgation and tonification. Therefore, Bai Zhu is used to tonify the spleen, and Zhi Shi is used to resolve fullness. The roasted rice is employed for its aroma to benefit the stomach; the lotus leaf is chosen because its upward orientation symbolizes the Zhen trigram (Thunder). Symbolizing Zhen implies the desire to promote the ascending and generating energy of the Shaoyang Gallbladder. This was a creation by Yi Lao (Zhang Yuansu) at one time, and a realization by Li Dongyuan in his later years. Who would say that the principles of formulating prescriptions are easy to comprehend?
Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, stir-fried with soil) Fu Ling (Poria, peeled) Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, wine-fried) Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, wine-fried, each three qian) Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis, two qian) Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, one liang) Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, stir-fried with bran) Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, each five qian)
This formula primarily governs cases where consumption of damp-heat damaging substances leads to indigestion and results in epigastric fullness.
The so-called damp-heat damaging substances refer to items such as alcohol and wheat noodles. Drying agents control dampness, and bland agents leach out dampness; thus, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, and Ze Xie are used. Bitter agents descend heat, and cold agents overcome heat; thus, Huang Qin, Huang Lian, Zhi Shi, and Da Huang are used. Agents that facilitate transformation can eliminate the old and generate the new; thus, Shen Qu is used.
San Leng (Rhizoma Sparganii, boiled in vinegar) E Zhu (Rhizoma Curcumae, boiled in vinegar) Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, white pith removed) Qing Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, stir-fried with bran, each five liang) Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis, processed) Hu Jiao (Fructus Piperis Nigris, each two liang)
Grind all into powder, bind with vinegar paste to make pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds, and coat with red alum. Take thirty pills per dose.
This formula primarily governs cases where consumption of cold substances leads to abdominal pain and the formation of accumulations.
San Leng and E Zhu are drugs that attack hardness and break accumulations, thus they can remove stagnation; Gan Jiang and Hu Jiao are acrid-hot substances, thus they can dispel cold; Qing Pi and Chen Pi are qi-moving substances, thus they can relieve pain. The reason for using vinegar paste to make pills is that the Classic states "sour overcomes sweet," thus it is used to treat stagnation caused by rich and sweet foods. It is necessary to use alum...
Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, skin and umbilicus removed, processed) Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis, processed) Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, radix tip removed) Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, stir-fried) Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, honey-fried)
When cold food is ingested, causing external cold to invade the stomach, resulting in severe middle jiao pain and a deep, slow pulse, this formula should be urgently administered.
Whenever ice is swallowed, spring water is drunk, or any cold substance is consumed beyond appropriate limits, cold qi condenses in the middle jiao, causing severe abdominal pain. A deep pulse indicates an interior condition, and a slow pulse indicates cold. In this formula, the acrid-hot nature of Gan Jiang and Fu Zi is used to warm the middle and dispel cold. The sweet-warm nature of Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, and Gan Cao is used to benefit the stomach after it has been injured.
