虎潜丸,息肝肾之虚风。风从虎,虎潜则风息也。惟知柏苦寒,用以泄肾经之邪火则可;
Huangbai (Salted and wine-fried Rhizoma Phellodendri) 8 liang, Zhi mu (Salted and wine-fried Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) 3 liang, Shu Dihuang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae) 3 liang, Hu Jing Gu (Suet-roasted Tibia Pantherae Tigris) 1 liang, Gui Ban (Suet-roasted Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis) 4 liang, Suo Yang (Wine-moistened Herba Cynomorii), Dang Gui (Wine-washed Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 1.5 liang, Niu Xi (Wine-steamed Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Bai Shao (Wine-fried Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Chenpi (Salt-water moistened Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) 2 liang.
Cook the mutton with wine until soft, mash it, and make pills. In winter, add Gan Jiang (Dry Ginger) 1 liang.
Huqian Wan (Tiger-Hiding Pill) extinguishes deficiency wind of the Liver and Kidney. Wind corresponds to the tiger; when the tiger hides, the wind ceases. However, Huangbai and Zhimu are bitter and cold; they can be used to drain pathogenic fire from the Kidney channel. If one claims they tonify the Kidney and nourish Yin, I do not agree; it is better to use herbs such as Gou Qi Zi (Fructus Lycii) and Tu Si Zi (Semen Cuscutae).
Jing Yang Rou (Lean Mutton) 7 jin (remove sinews, fat, and skin, slice open, insert the following powdered herbs), Rou Cong Rong (Herba Cistanche) and Shan Yao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) each 10 liang, Dang Gui (Wine-washed Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 12 liang, Tian Dong (Radix Asparagi) 1 jin.
Grind into powder, place inside the mutton, tie securely, and boil in four bottles of pure wine until dry. Then add two dou of water, boil until soft, and add the following medicines.
Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) 5 liang, Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 3 liang, Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 2 liang. Grind into powder, form cakes using Nuomi Yin (Rice Decoction), bake until dry, mix with other ingredients to make pills, and take with warm wine.
This formula uses "blood and flesh sentient substances" (meat-based tonics) to supplement shape with shape. Fortunately, it avoids the cloying nature of Di Huang, harmoniously regulating Ying and Wei without obstructing the Spleen and Stomach, thus being extremely appropriate.
Tian Dong (Radix Asparagi) and Shu Di Huang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae) each 2 liang, Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 1 liang, Huang Bai (Wine-fried Rhizoma Phellodendri) 3 liang, Sha Ren (Fructus Amomi) 1.5 liang, Gan Cao (Roasted Radix Glycyrrhizae) 0.75 qian.
Make pills with wheat paste. Take Wu Rong Pian (Cistanche slices) 5 qian, soak in one large cup of wine overnight, decoct the liquid, and use it to swallow the pills.
This formula is suitable for treating nocturnal emission due to restless Dragon Fire (Long Lei Zhi Huo). However, if Kidney Qi has been deficient for a long time and the Essence Palace is insecure, how can bitter-cold herbs still be used! It is imperative to adopt methods that tonify the Kidney and grasp Qi.
Zi He Che (Placenta Hominis) one piece, Bai Gui Ban (Child's urine-soaked for three days, suet-roasted yellow) 2 liang, Huang Bai (Salted and wine-fried Rhizoma Phellodendri), Du Zhong (Suet-roasted Cortex Eucommiae) each 1.5 liang, Niu Xi (Wine-soaked Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Tian Dong (Radix Asparagi, de-centered), Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis, de-centered), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) each 1 liang, Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae) 2 liang (boiled together with Fu Ling (Poria) and Sha Ren (Fructus Amomi) 6 qian, then remove Fu Ling and Sha Ren).
In summer, add Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae) 5 qian, boil with wine, and make pills with rice paste. For women, remove Gui Ban and add Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 2 liang, boil with milk, and make pills with paste.
The combination of Fu Ling (Poria) and Sha Ren (Fructus Amomi) in this formula is excellent for counteracting the cloying nature of Di Huang. However, one must fear that the bitter-cold nature of Huang Bai may damage the Spleen and Stomach, gradually leading to poor appetite and loose stools, thereby further injuring Metal (Lung) Qi. This is a concern that cannot be ignored; it is better to omit Huang Bai.
