Treats summer-heat toxin invading the Heart, presenting with fever, extreme thirst, and difficult urination; as well as summer-heat and dampness clashing, causing spontaneous sweating and heaviness of the body (Formula see in Dampness-Draining Section). If thirst is prominent, remove Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), add Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) (Zhu Danxi said: Hua Borén often doubted that diaphoresis should not be used for summer-heat diseases, because summer-heat injures the Heart, heat damages Qi, sweat is the fluid of the Heart, excessive sweating will inevitably lead to collapse of Yang,
Treats Taiyang Zhongshu (Heatstroke affecting the Taiyang channel), manifesting as body heat, sweating, cold feet, aversion to cold, faint pulse, and thirst (Formula see in Fire-Draining Section).
Treats thirst caused by summer-heat injury, with a deficient pulse (Formula see in Fire-Draining Section).
Dampness is a Yin pathogen. The Classics state: When the dampness of the earth is excessive, it harms the skin, flesh, sinews, and vessels. It also states: All dampness-induced swelling and fullness belong to the Spleen. Dampness is the Qi transformation of Earth.
Treats cases where Taiyang disease, after sweating therapy, results in profuse sweating, dryness in the Stomach, irritability and inability to sleep, and desire for water. Give small amounts frequently; when the Stomach Qi harmonizes, the patient recovers. If the pulse is floating, urination is difficult, there is slight fever, and polydipsia (extreme thirst), this decoction is indicated (A floating pulse indicates the exterior syndrome persists; constipation, heat, and thirst indicate the interior Fu organ syndrome is urgent; this formula resolves both exterior and interior). Also treats Wind-stroke with fever persisting for six or seven days without resolution, accompanied by vexation, presenting with both exterior and interior signs, desire to drink water, but vomiting immediately after drinking, named Water Reversal (Exterior refers to unresolving external symptoms; Interior refers to vexation and thirst belonging to the Fu organs; pathogenic heat carrying accumulated fluid rebels upward, so ingested water is rejected and cannot enter). Also treats Cold Damage epigastric fullness, where Xixin Decoction failed to resolve symptoms, accompanied by thirst, irritability, and difficult urination (This formula excels at purging heat, moistening dryness, guiding out fluid retention, and generating fluids, thus it is also an excellent formula for resolving fullness. Cheng Jiaoqian said: Treating pathogens in the Upper Jiao by acting on the Lower Jiao allows turbid Yin to exit through the lower orifices, allowing clear Yang in the Upper Jiao to naturally circulate and transform. Pathogenic factors in the Heart are drained via the Small Intestine, which is another method. Wang Ang notes: This is standard treatment, not an alternative method; it is treating Fu excess by draining the Fu organ). It generally treats various dampness-induced abdominal fullness, edema from water retention, vomiting and regurgitation, diarrhea, Cold-Damp attacking the Lungs causing wheezing or coughing, summer-heat with vexation and thirst, fever and headache, Heat accumulation in the Bladder, constipation with thirst, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, phlegm-fluid retention and damp malaria, body pain and heaviness (These are all manifestations of Dampness injury. Excessive Dampness impairs Spleen transportation, Earth fails to control Water; overflowing into the skin causes swelling, entering the Large Intestine causes diarrhea, stopping below the Heart causes vomiting, Cold-Water attacking the Lungs causes wheezing and coughing. Summer-heat enters the Heart first, causing vexation and thirst; Wuling San promotes urination and descends Heart Fire, thus it also treats summer-heat with vexation and thirst. Lung disease means Metal cannot generate Water; Bladder Heat means Yang cannot transform Yin, leading to constipation and thirst; Yin-Yang disharmony leads to cholera with vomiting and diarrhea; Excessive Dampness leads to body pain and heaviness. Generally, if the lower orifices are not unobstructed, Yin and Yang cannot ascend and descend, leading to many complications).
Polyporus (Zuling), Poria (Fuling), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) (stir-fried, 18 zhu), Alisma Rhizome (Zexie) (1 liang 6 zhu half), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) (0.5 liang. Note: For miscellaneous diseases, Guizhi should be used; for Cold Damage where the exterior is unresolved, Guizhi should still be used to simultaneously release the exterior). Grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Drink plenty of hot water after administration; recovery occurs with sweating. For summer-heat injury, add Cinnabar (Zhusha).
This is a medicine for the Foot-Taiyang bladder channel. Heat from Taiyang transmits to the Bladder Fu organ, causing thirst and urinary obstruction. The Classics state: Bland flavors have seeping and draining properties and belong to Yang; the two Ling herbs (Polyporus and Poria) are sweet and bland, enter the Lung meridian, and unblock the Bladder, serving as Sovereign herbs (Water has no specific correspondence to the five flavors, so blandness can promote urination. Fuling moves in the Qi level, Zuling moves in the Blood level, but they must ascend to the Lung before descending into the Bladder); Salty flavors have surging and draining properties and belong to Yin; Alisma Rhizome (Zexie) is sweet and salty, enters the Kidney and Bladder meridians, jointly promoting water pathways, serving as Minister herbs; Strengthening Earth controls Water, so Bitter-Warm Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) strengthens the Spleen and removes Dampness, serving as Assistant herbs; The Bladder stores fluids, and Qi transformation allows them to exit, so Acrid-Hot Cinnamon Bark (Rougui) serves as Guide herbs. Using heat to treat heat, it guides the action into the Bladder to transform Qi, allowing Damp-Heat pathogens to exit via small urination (If after sweating or purging, internal loss of body fluids leads to urinary difficulty, Wuling San should not be used, lest it further deplete fluids and Yin; do not treat it directly, normal urination will restore itself spontaneously. There are also cases of severe heat with delirium and urinary difficulty where this decoction is used, aiming to direct Taiyang pathogens traveling along the channels directly to the Bladder to exit via urine, which embodies the principle of "pulling firewood from under the pot". Chen Laizhang said: There are three ways to treat constipation: First, Lung dryness fails to transform Qi, so use the sweet-bland Polyporus and Alisma to drain the Lung and descend Qi; Second, Spleen dampness fails to raise essence, so use bitter-warm Atractylodes to dry the Spleen and raise essence; Third, Bladder lacks Yang to transform Qi, so use acrid-hot Cinnamon to warm the Bladder and transform Yin; once water pathways are unobstructed, it stops thirst above, removes dampness in the middle, and drains pathogenic heat below. Li Dongyuan said: Wuling San is a purgative for Taiyang interior syndromes. Taiyang superficial syndromes are treated by sweating; interior syndromes are treated by guiding them out. Thirst indicates pathogens have entered the Taiyang root, requiring purging to allow exit via the Bladder. It is unsuitable if urination is already free, yet even if urination is free, if Taiyang heat causes thirst, Wuling San should still be used to purge. He also stated: Pathogens between Ying and Wei are called Half-Exterior Half-Interior; Wuling San regulates the Half-Exterior Half-Interior of the Bladder channel, while Lizhong Tang treats the Half-Exterior Half-Interior of vomiting and diarrhea. *Huoren* states: Floating and large pulses indicate exterior syndromes, requiring sweating; fever, vexation, thirst, and red urine indicate interior syndromes requiring purging; when both exterior and interior signs are present, Wuling San is indicated. How can Wuling San, which promotes urination, stop thirst and generate fluids? Because Damp-Heat stagnates in the Middle Jiao, Qi cannot transform, leading to fluid exhaustion and urinary obstruction; using Wuling San to promote urination eliminates Damp-Heat downward, restoring fluids and stopping thirst, aligning with the *Neijing* principle of "treating obstruction with unblocking methods". Li Dongyuan said: Injury from fluids involves formless pathogens, suitable for sweating and promoting urination to guide out Dampness; injury from food involves tangible...
Removing Cinnamon Twig from this formula yields Siling San (Li Dongyuan said: Without aversion to cold, Cinnamon Twig should not be used. Zhou Yangjun said: Wuling San is designed for thirst with difficult urination; if no thirst, Fuling Gancao Decoction suffices; if only thirst, Siling San suffices); Adding Cinnabar yields Chensha Wuling San: Both treat difficult urination. Adding Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome (Cangzhu) yields Canggui Wuling San: Treats Cold-Damp. Adding Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (Yinchen) yields Yichen Wuling San: Treats Damp-Heat jaundice with constipation and thirst. Adding Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo) yields Yuanrong Wuling San: Treats Middle Jiao heat accumulation. Adding Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Talcum (Huashi), and Hypocoelites (Hanshui Shi) clears Heat of the Six Fu organs, yielding Guiling Ganlu Yin (*Xuanming Lun* sees in Fire Section). Removing Cinnamon Twig and Alisma Rhizome yields Zhuling San (*Jinkui Yaolue*): Treats vomiting, pathology above the Diaphragm, with desire for water. Using equal parts Cinnamon Twig and Poria, honey-pilled, yields Guiling Wan: Treats summer-heat vexation and thirst, excessive drinking, abdominal distension, and red urine. Using only Alisma Rhizome (5 liang) and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (2 liang) yields Zexie Tang (*Jinkui Yaolue*): Treats subdiaphragmatic fluid retention with frequent dizziness. Using equal parts Poria and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome yields Fuling Baizhu Tang: Treats Spleen deficiency failing to control Water, excessive Dampness diarrhea. Adding Prunus Li Seed (Yuliren) taken with Ginger Juice yields Bai Fuling Tang: Treats edema. Adding Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi) treats Hydrocele. Adding Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) yields Chunze Tang; adding Licorice Root (Gancao) combined with Sizijunzi Tang also yields Chunze Tang: Treats thirst without disease and thirst after convalescence. Removing Cinnamon Twig, adding Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome, Licorice Root, White Peony Root, Gardenia Fruit, Scutellaria Root, and Notopterygium Rhizome yields Ershu Siling Tang: Treats exterior-interior Dampness and clears summer-heat. Doubling Cinnamon Twig and adding Phellodendron Cortex (Huangbai) in equal amount to Atractylodes treats summer-heat with profuse sweating. Adding Licorice Root, Talcum, and Gardenia Fruit, decocted with Salt and Juncus Effusus (Dengcao) yields Jian'an Daochi San: Treats Heat accumulating in the Bladder with constipation and thirst; for Damp-Heat jaundice, add Artemisiae Scopariae Herba; for Fluid binding in the Chest, add Akebia Caulis (Mutong). Combining with Yi Yuan San treats various dampness-related dribbling urination. Adding Amber yields Fuling Hupo Tang (Qianfu says: Treats frequent short urination). Combining with Pingwei San yields Weiling Tang, also known as Duijin Yinzi: Treats summer-heat with Dampness injury, retained fluids with food stagnation, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and thirst with constipation (This disperses Dampness from upper and lower). Note: *Jiyao* discusses diarrhea due to Wind, Dampness, Cold, and Fire, originating from external pathogens; *Sanyin* mentions emotional disturbances causing organ imbalance leading to loose stools, originating from internal injuries; externally regulate the Six Qi, internally regulate the Five Zang. Diarrhea due to dietary injury requires digestion-promoting methods; Wind-induced diarrhea requires dispersion; Phlegm accumulation in the Upper Jiao causing Large Intestine insecurity requires phlegm-resolving methods; Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency diarrhea requires tonifying Middle Qi to raise Stomach Qi, stopping diarrhea spontaneously. Combining with Huanglian Xiangru Yin yields Ruling Tang: Treats summer-heat diarrhea. Combining with Xiaochaihu Tang yields Chailing Tang: Treats diarrhea with fever and thirst, malaria with more heat than chills, dry mouth, and vexation. The above three formulas are decocted with Ginger and Jujube. Shenshi used this formula to treat white hair and alopecia: Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (1 jin), Cinnamon Twig (0.5 jin), the two Ling herbs, and Alisma Rhizome (4 liang each), renamed Fuling Zhu San.
