Houji Heisan (Marquis Hou's Black Powder) treats severe wind disease causing heaviness and restlessness in the four limbs, and a sensation of coldness and insufficiency in the heart. The *Waitai* (External Cabinet) uses this formula for wind epilepsy. The discussion of the formula is found in the preceding methods; however, using Chrysanthemi Flos (Chrysanthemum Flower) as the sovereign drug is likely to prevent pathogenic wind from entering the Heart due to deficiency. Chrysanthemi Flos (40 fen), Atractylodis Rhizoma (10 fen), Asari Radix, Poria, Ostrea Concha (each 3 fen), Platycodonis Radix (8 fen), Saposhnikoviae Radix (10 fen), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Alum, Scutellariae Radix, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Cinnamomi Ramulus (each 3 fen). These fourteen ingredients are pounded into a powder. Take one fangcun bi (a measure roughly equivalent to a square inch) with wine, three times daily. For the first twenty days of treatment, take it mixed with warm wine. Avoid all fish, meat, and garlic. It is advisable to consume cold food for sixty days. This is because the medicine accumulates in the abdomen without descending; hot food causes it to descend immediately, whereas cold food naturally assists the medicinal power.
Fengyin Tang (Wind-Driving Decoction) clears heat-induced paralysis. The discussion of the formula is found in the preceding methods. Generally, wind externally governs the Jueyin meridian, internally belongs to Liver Wood, ascends to the Hand meridians, descends to the Foot meridians, and manifests Shaoyang Ministerial Fire. Therefore, wind originating internally arises from fire and heat. When wind arises, it inevitably damages the Earth element (Spleen/Stomach); Earth governs the four limbs, so when Earth is diseased, the extremities lose function, and accumulated fluids transform into phlegm. Paralysis occurs because wind and fire carry phlegm to deposit in the four limbs. Observing this formula in the *Jinkui Yaolue*, it is evident that unless fire is reduced, wind will not extinguish; unless the orifices are filled, wind will regenerate. Once wind and fire blaze fiercely, the Five Spirits lose their master; thus, its medication is so comprehensive. Rheae Fructus, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Longgu (each 4 liang), Cinnamomi Ramulus (3 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Ostrea Concha (each 2 liang), Talcum, Gypsum Fibrosum, Natronis Aquastone, Ferri Oxydum Rubrum, Ferri Oxydum Album, Purpureum (each 6 liang). These twelve ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted, stored in a leather bag. Take a pinch held by three fingers, boil in three sheng of well water for three boils, and take one sheng warm. It treats adult wind-driving symptoms, pediatric convulsions and spasms occurring dozens of times daily, which physicians cannot treat. Chao Yuanfang used this formula for podagra.
Yufeng Dan (Wind-Curing Pill) treats various wind syndromes, including lateral and frontal headaches. Fangfeng Tongsheng San, Siwu Tang, Huanglian Jiedu Tang, each one portion, plus Notopterygii Rhizoma, Asari Radix, Chrysanthemi Flos, Gastrodiae Rhizoma, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (each 1 liang). Pound these into a fine powder, refine honey to make pills the size of bullet seeds. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly, and swallow with clear tea infusion. Take at any time. Note: External wind combines with internal heat-fire, following yang to attack the head. However, when wind and fire are excessive, Ying blood must be deficient; hence, the medication is as such.
Weifeng Tang (Stomach-Wind Decoction) treats deficiency-wind syndrome, characterized by ability to eat, numbness in hands and feet, stiffness and twitching of the jaw, internal trembling of the eyes, and facial swelling due to stomach wind. Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (each 1 qian 2 fen), Ephedrae Herba, Puerariae Radix (each 1 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Bupleuri Radix, Notopterygii Rhizoma, Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma, Phellodendri Cortex, Alpiniae Katsumadai Semen, Viticis Fructus (each 5 fen). Take two zhan of water, three slices of fresh ginger, one jujube, decoct until one zhan remains, strain, and drink. Note: Why can one eat if wind enters the stomach? Generally, wind generates heat, which aligns with the principle in the *Neijing* where "damp-heat becomes Xiao Zhong" (excessive heat leading to consumption). The formula only dispels wind but does not clear heat, because heat will resolve externally along with the wind, requiring no separate treatment.
Yiyiren Tang (Coix Seed Decoction) treats stroke with flowing pain in hands and feet, numbness and insensitivity, and difficulty in flexion and extension. Coicis Semen (3 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Paeoniae Radix Alba (each 1 qian 2 fen), Ephedrae Herba, Cinnamomi Ramulus (each 5 fen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (soaked in rice wash water, cut, fried, 1 qian 5 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (8 fen). Take two zhan of water, seven slices of fresh ginger, decoct until 8/10 remains, strain, and take warm before meals. Reduce Ephedrae Herba if spontaneous sweating; reduce Cinnamomi Ramulus if there is heat. Note: This treats the syndrome of wind-dampness battling, causing joint dysfunction; hence, the medication is as such.
Paifeng Tang (Wind-Expelling Decoction) treats wind-deficiency, cold-dampness, pathogenic qi entering the zang organs, delirious speech, mental confusion, and other syndromes of five-zang wind onset. Saposhnikoviae Radix, Atractylodis Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Paeoniae Radix Alba, Cinnamomi Cortex, Armeniacae Semen Amarum, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Dictamni Cortex, roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (each 1 qian), Ephedrae Herba, Poria, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (each 3 qian). Divide into two doses. Each dose takes two zhan of water, three slices of fresh ginger, decoct until 7/10 remains, strain, and drink. Note: Although deficiency-wind, cold, and dampness have entered the zang, the treatment method must first disperse them to exit externally; hence, the medication is as such.
Renshen Buqi Tang (Ginseng Qi-Nourishing Decoction) treats numbness of the fingers. Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Astragali Radix (each 2 qian), Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Bupleuri Radix, Paeoniae Radix Alba, raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Schisandrae Fructus (each 5 fen). Take one zhan of water, decoct until 5/10 remains. Take after meals and before sleep. Decoct the dregs again. Note: All Yang meridians originate in the fingers. Numbness indicates the beginning of wind. One should urgently tonify qi to resist external wind; thus, this formula is used as a precautionary measure.
Shujin Bao'an San (Tendon-Calming Security Powder) treats left hemiplegia and right paralysis, tendon and vessel spasm, body immobility, weak legs and feet, dry and wet podagra, and long-standing dampness obstructing collaterals. It promotes the circulation of various qi. Chaenomeli Fructus (5 liang), Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma, Panzeris Schizurae Carapax, wine-soaked Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, Dipsaci Radix, fried white Bombyx Batryticatus, Pine Node, Paeoniae Radix Alba, Linderae Radix, Gastrodiae Rhizoma, Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, Astragali Radix, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Saposhnikoviae Radix, tiger bone (wine-fried, each 1 liang). Soak these herbs in one dou of unadulterated wine for forty-two days, seal tightly. After the period, take the herbs, bake dry, pound into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with the soaking wine. When the wine is finished, mix with rice soup. Note: This treats wind-dampness knotting between tendons and vessels, stagnating and not dispersing, obstructing healthy qi and preventing its smooth flow; hence, the medication is as such.
Jiefeng San (Wind-Resolving Powder) treats wind-induced alternating chills and fever, dizziness of head and eyes, limb pain, hand and foot numbness, and upper chest congestion. Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (half tael), Ephedrae Herba (2 liang), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Asari Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (each 1 liang). Pound into a fine powder. Take 5 qian per dose, with one and a half zhan of water, five slices of fresh ginger, and a little mint leaf. Decoct until 8/10 remains. Take at any time. Note: Wind causing alternating chills and fever results from wind entering the stomach, brewing imbalance in Ying and Wei. The fourth formula, Weifeng Tang, is precisely a medicine to drive stomach wind out externally. Here, because wind has invaded for a long time, Stomach qi becomes deficient. Thus, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma is the sovereign, Ephedrae Herba and Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma are ministers, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix and Asari Radix are assistants, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma is the envoy, harmonizing Ying and Wei to achieve external resolution. If chronic wind leads to undigested stool diarrhea, wind has entered the interior; then Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma should be sovereign, Cinnamomi Ramulus and Atractylodis Rhizoma ministers, Poria and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma assistants and envoys, to drive wind from within. This is the balance of exterior and interior, the essence of the *Neijing*. Although this formula uses the phrase "wind causing chills and fever," it lacks specific grounding, so I mention it here.
Soufeng Shunqi Wan (Wind-Searching and Qi-Smooth Pill) treats constipation due to wind-dryness, leading to qi closure. Use temporarily to disperse wind, moisten dryness, and smooth qi; it is indispensable. The original text exaggerates, claiming long-term use cures all diseases and rejuvenates the elderly, which is unreasonable. It also states pregnant women should not take it; if mild abdominal pain occurs during medication, supplement with lamb lung soup, indicating the medicine is harsh and should not be taken long-term. Plantaginis Semen (1.5 liang), Arecae Semen, toasted and husked Cannabis Fructus, wine-soaked Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, Pruni Semen (soaked in boiling water, peeled, ground separately), Cuscutae Semen (processed), dried Dioscoreae Rhizoma (each 2 liang), bran-fried Aurantii Fructus, Saposhnikoviae Radix, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (each 1 liang), Rheae Radix et Rhizoma (5.5 qian, half raw, half processed). Pound into powder, refine honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, with wine, tea, or rice drink, on an empty stomach and before bed. Removes intestinal wind and old stagnation, and intestinal wind bleeding.
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) treats wind coming from outside, lodging in the collaterals, remaining and not departing. This formula is indicated. Cinnamomi Ramulus, Paeoniae Radix Alba, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (each 3 qian), Jujubae Fructus (2 pieces). Take one and a half zhan of water, simmer gently until 8/10 remains. Take warm. Shortly after, drink hot thin porridge to assist medicinal power. Cover warmly for about an hour until slight general sweating occurs, which is best. See *Shanglun* Taiyang Upper Chapter. Note: This formula is the ancestor of all formulas for stroke. Not only for wind entering collaterals, but also for wind entering meridians, fu-organs, or zang-organs, this base formula should be added. Because wind enters from outside, it must ultimately be driven out via the exterior. Later generations compete to modify Xuming Tang, ignoring this formula, forgetting the source. How much more so those who have lost both source and lineage!
Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) treats stroke with loss of consciousness, gradually developing hemiplegia, deviation of mouth and eyes, tremors of hands and feet, slurred speech, limb numbness, mental confusion, dizziness, excessive phlegm-fire, tendon spasm preventing flexion/extension, painful joints preventing turning, effective for various wind syndromes. Effective for podagra weakness; long-term use brings recovery. Patients with chronic wind should take this proactively during cloudy weather or seasonal changes to prevent aphonia. Saposhnikoviae Radix, Guixin (Cinnamon Bark), Scutellariae Radix, apricot kernels (peeled, tip removed, fried), Paeoniae Radix Alba, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Ephedrae Herba (nodes removed), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (each 1 qian 4 fen), Podagrici Radix (2 qian), prepared Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, 7 fen). Pound into coarse pieces, divide into two packets. Each packet takes one and a half zhan of water, five slices of fresh ginger, one jujube, decoct until 8/10 remains. For mental vagueness, add Tianmae Rhizoma and Polygalae Radix. For painful joints with heat, remove Fuzi and double Paeoniae Radix Alba. Without heat, double Cinnamomi Ramulus and Fuzi. For vexation and frequent fright, add Cornu Bubali. For vomiting and abdominal distension, add Pinelliae Rhizoma and double Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma. For irritability and constipation, remove Fuzi, double Paeoniae Radix Alba, add Bamboo Juice. For cold-zang diarrhea, remove Podagrici Radix and Scutellariae Radix, double Fuzi, add Atractylodis Rhizoma. For spontaneous sweating, remove Ephedrae Herba and Armeniacae Semen Amarum, add Atractylodis Rhizoma. For weak ankles/knees, add Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix and Dendrobii Caulis. For body pain, add Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix. For lower back pain, add Persicae Semen and Eucommiae Cortex (fried with ginger juice). For aphonia, add Armeniacae Semen Amarum. Note: This formula does not distinguish meridians or excess/deficiency/cold/heat. Without careful differentiation and modification, efficacy is hard to achieve. I record Yi Lao’s Six-Meridian modification methods as examples. Practitioners should learn the intent. Yi Lao’s Six-Meridian Modifications: Mahuang Xuming Tang treats stroke with no sweat and aversion to cold; double Mahuang, Armeniacae Semen Amarum, and Saposhnikoviae Radix in this formula. Guizhi Xuming Tang treats stroke with sweat and aversion to wind; double Guizhi, Paeoniae Radix Alba, and Armeniacae Semen Amarum. Both are Taiyang wind-stroke. Baihu Xuming Tang treats stroke with sweat, body heat, no aversion to cold; add Shizhus Mu and Gypsum Fibrosum (1 qian 4 fen each), remove Fuzi. Gegen Xuming Tang treats stroke with body heat, sweat, no aversion to wind; add Puerariae Radix, Guizhi, and Scutellariae Radix (double amount). Both are Yangming wind-stroke. Fuzi Xuming Tang treats stroke with no sweat and cool body; add double Fuzi, Ganjiang and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (1 qian each). This is Taiyin wind-stroke. GuiFu Xuming Tang treats stroke with sweat and no heat; add double Guizhi, Fuzi, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma. This is Shaoyin wind-stroke. Qianghuo Lianqiao Xuming Tang handles confused six wind syndromes linked to Shaoyang/Jueyin, with joint spasms or numbness; add Qianghuo and Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (1.5 qian each).
Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Wind-Protecting Universal Rescue Powder) treats various wind convulsions, limb spasms, pediatric acute wind-stroke, constipation, sudden severe pathogenic heat, muscle twitching, and all wind syndromes. Saposhnikoviae Radix, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Paeoniae Radix Alba, Rheae Radix et Rhizoma, Mirabilite, Forsythiae Fructus, Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, Ephedrae Herba, Gardeniae Fructus, Gypsum Fibrosum, Platycodonis Radix, Scutellariae Radix, Atractylodis Rhizoma, Schizonepetae Spica, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Talcum (each 5 fen). Take two zhan of water, three slices of fresh ginger, decoct until 8/10 remains. For phlegm-cough, add Banxia processed with fresh ginger. For obstruction, add 2 qian Rheae Radix et Rhizoma. For broken-wind-stroke, add Qianghuo and Scorpio (each 5 fen). For waist/flank pain, add Mirabilite and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (each 1 qian). Note: This is a light formula treating both exterior and interior. Using Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Paeoniae Radix Alba, and Atractylodis Rhizoma harmonizes blood and benefits spleen. Thus, sweating does not damage the exterior, purging does not damage the interior, allowing multiple doses.
Qufeng Zhibao Gao (Wind-Expelling Precious Ointment/Pill) treats various wind-heat. Saposhnikoviae Radix (1.5 liang), Atractylodis Rhizoma (1.5 liang), Paeoniae Radix Alba (2.5 liang), Mirabilite (5 qian), Gypsum Fibrosum (1 liang), Talcum (3 liang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (2.5 liang), Scutellariae Radix (1 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (2 liang), Rheae Radix et Rhizoma (5 qian), Forsythiae Fructus (5 qian), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (2.5 liang), Ephedrae Herba (5 qian, nodes not removed), Gastrodiae Rhizoma (1 liang), Schizonepetae Spica (5 qian), Gardeniae Fructus (5 qian), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (1 liang), Phellodendri Cortex (5 qian), Platycodonis Radix (1 liang), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (5 qian), Notopterygii Rhizoma, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (each 1 liang), Scorpio, Asari Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma (each 5 qian), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (1 liang). Pound into fine powder, refine honey to make pills the size of bullet seeds. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly, swallow with tea or wine, before bed. Note: This formula also treats both exterior and interior. It consists of the seventeen ingredients of Fangfeng Tongsheng San, plus Rehmanniae Radix Preparata to nourish blood, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma to boost qi, Phellodendri Cortex and Coptidis Rhizoma to clear heat, Notopterygii Rhizoma, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Gastrodiae Rhizoma, Scorpio, and Asari Radix to expel wind. It is an exclusive formula for the wind-stroke chapter, not comparable to generic formulas.
Buhuan Jin Dan (Unchanging Golden Pill) reduces wind and clears heat, treating stroke with locked jaw. Schizonepetae Spica, Bombyx Batryticatus, Gastrodiae Rhizoma, roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (each 1 liang), Qianghuo, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Bai Fu Zi (Typhonii Rhizoma), Wutou (Aconiti Radix), Scorpion Tail, Huoxiang Ye (Perillae Folium, each half tael), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (3 liang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (1 liang). Pound into powder, refine honey to make pills the size of bullet seeds. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly, swallow with tea or wine. Can also be applied topically. Note: This formula has strong wind-expelling power, but its heat-clearing effect is uncertain. It is suitable mainly for wind combined with cold and phlegm-qi obstruction.
Sanhua Tang (Three Transformations Decoction) treats stroke with exterior Six-Meridian symptoms; initially treat with modified Xuming Tang. If there is internal obstruction of urination/defecation, this formula is indicated. Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, Rheae Radix et Rhizoma, Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, Notopterygii Rhizoma (equal parts). Take 1 liang per dose, decoct in water. Note: This is a harsh purgative for the interior. Do not take lightly unless constitution is solid. In cold damage, stomach heat and intestinal dryness require Dachengqi Tang to open blockage. Yet, Xiaochengqi Tang and Tiaowei Chengqi Tang are used first to avoid harm from misuse. In stroke, there is often upward reversal of deficient qi and obstruction of passages; there is absolutely no reason to use Dachengqi Tang. Ancient formulas sought to keep medicine in the abdomen to gradually fill empty orifices, extinguishing internal wind. Why do modern practitioners open orifices to expel wind, leaving orifices empty and wind fiercer? Where does this end?
Sheng Yin Tiao Suhewan (Life-Preserving Drink Adjusted with Suhewan) treats all apoplexy, whether wind-stroke, cold-stroke, summerheat-stroke, damp-stroke, or qi-stroke. Also applicable to phlegm-jue and fluid-jue at onset. First, take soap bean (destringed), Asari Radix, raw Arisaema Rhizoma, and Pinelliae Rhizoma as powder, blow into nose. Wait for sneezing, then administer the previous medicine. For locked jaw, dip middle finger in Arisaema Rhizoma, Pinelliae Rhizoma, and Asari Radix powder mixed with sour plum flesh, frequently apply to open mouth. Arisaema Rhizoma (round white ones, wrapped in wet paper and baked), Nanmuxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Atractylodis Rhizoma, Asari Radix, raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Changpu Rhizoma (each 1 qian), Pinelliae Rhizoma (soaked in boiling water briefly, 1.5 qian). Chop these seven items into pieces. Divide into two doses. Take one and a half zhan of water, seven thick slices of fresh ginger, decoct until half remains. Mix hot with half a pill of Suhexiang Wan and force down. For heavy phlegm, add two roasted Scorpios. Note: This formula is necessary for stroke with qi closure and phlegm confusion. However, those with inherent deficiency cannot tolerate Moschus, Bovaris Calculus, and pungent aromatics that destroy wood. Adjust dosage to 20-30%. Niuhuang Qingxin Wan and Suhewan have different treatments: for heat blocking orifices, use Niuhuang Wan; for cold blocking orifices, use Suhewan. For death signs like open mouth, scattered hands, and incontinence, urgently use large doses of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Fuzi; survival is possible. If Niuhuang or Suhewan enter the mouth, death follows instantly, akin to crushing a thread with a thousand-weight stone.
Wuyao Shunqi San (Lindera Smooth-Qi Powder) treats wind qi attacking four limbs, joint pain, whole-body numbness. Also treats paralysis, slurred speech, difficult walking due to podagra, and limb immobility. First, take this medicine in large amounts to smooth rebellious qi, then prescribe wind-dispelling medicines according to symptoms. Ephedrae Herba (nodes removed), Chenpi (tangerine peel, pith removed), Wuyao (wood removed, each 2 liang), fried white Bombyx Batryticatus (mouth removed), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, bran-fried Aurantii Fructus, Platycodonis Radix (each 1 liang), prepared Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 5 qian). Pound into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, with one zhan of water, three slices of fresh ginger, one jujube, decoct. For aversion to cold, high fever, headache, and fatigue, add three cun of scallion white, decoct, and take to induce sweating. Or, if body cannot flex/extend, take with warm wine. Note: Stroke syndromes often involve qi-strike, not just acute cases. All stroke syndromes exhibit this. Yan Yonghe said: If vital qi is strong, Ying and Wei are peaceful, and pores are tight, how can external pathogens cause harm? If Seven Emotions, diet, or labor weaken true qi, making Ying and Wei sparse, pathogens enter via deficiency, causing disease. If caused internally by Seven Emotions, regulate qi, do not treat wind. If caused externally by Six Evils, first regulate qi, then treat based on external Six Qi. This is a good method; use Ba Wei Shun Feng San. Yan’s theory is sound. His Ba Wei Shun Qi San uses Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Atractylodis Rhizoma, Poria, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Chenpi (five of the six ingredients of Liujunzi Tang), plus Wuyao, Qingpi, and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, totaling eight ingredients. Compared to the Bureau Formula Wuyao Shunqi San, which excludes Ephedrae Herba, Aurantii Fructus, Platycodonis Radix, and Bombyx Batryticatus, it embodies the profound principle of treating qi first, then wind. Later critics claimed his theory was incomplete and objected to Angelicae Dahuricae Radix in the formula. They did not realize Angelicae Dahuricae Radix is fragrant but not drying, a good herb for harmonizing Ying and Wei.
