The *Yunqi Pian* (Chapter on Five Movements and Six Qi) states: Excess of Wood is called "Fa Sheng" (Generation). In the years of "Fa Sheng," diseases related to anger occur. It further states: When Wood Qi is excessive, Wind Qi prevails; in severe cases, people become irritable and prone to anger.
It also states: When the annual Earth Qi is insufficient, Wind Qi will prevail greatly, and the common people will suffer from diseases characterized by irritability and anger.
Qibo stated: The body's Yang Qi, when subjected to extreme anger, causes the form and Qi to sever, with blood stagnating in the upper part, leading to sudden syncope (sudden loss of consciousness). It also states: Sudden anger damages Yang Qi. Furthermore, anger causes Qi to rebel; in severe cases, it leads to hematemesis (vomiting blood) or Yin leakage (diarrhea or discharge from the lower orifices).
(Xiangfu Gancao San / Cyperi Rhizoma and Glycyrrhiza Decoction by Zhu Danxi) Treats conditions caused by angry emotions.
Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu Mi) (6 liang), Glycyrrhiza Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (1 liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with warm water for administration; symptoms will dissipate immediately.
The *Yin Yang Ying Xiang Da Lun* (Great Treatise on the Correspondences of Yin and Yang) states: In the Zang organs, it corresponds to the Heart; in the five sounds, it corresponds to laughter; in the five emotions, it corresponds to joy. It also states: The Heart stores the Shen (Spirit); an excess of Shen manifests as incessant laughter.
It further states: When Jing-Qi (Essence and Qi) gathers in the Heart, joy arises.
The *Yunqi Pian* states: Excess of Fire is called "He Xi" (Blazing Heat). In the years of "He Xi," diseases involving laughter and madness occur. It also states: Where Shao Yin (Lesser Yin) arrives, there is joy and laughter.
The *Yuan Bing Shi* (Book on the Origins of Diseases) states: Laughter symbolizes luxuriant growth, freshness, comfort, glory, and manifestation; this is the transformation of Fire. Therefore, joy is the emotion of the Heart. Laughing out of extreme joy is like the sound made by burning fire; it is the image of joy vocalizing. Thus, pathological laughter indicates excessive Heart Fire.
Zihe (Zhang Yuhe) encountered a woman on the road who had been laughing incessantly for half a year. All other physicians' treatments had been exhausted. Upon seeing her, Zihe said, "This is easy to treat."
He used 2 liang of salt, heated a lump until red-hot, allowed it to cool, ground it into a fine powder, and decocted it in one large bowl of river water until it boiled three to five times. After cooling to a warm temperature, he instructed her to drink it in three divided doses. Shortly after, he induced vomiting by probing the throat with a hairpin, expelling five sheng of hot phlegm. Subsequently, she took a large dose of Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Detoxification), and within a few days, the laughter ceased.
Huanglian Jiedu Tang (See formula in Hot Disease chapter) administered with Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) can treat incessant laughter with extreme efficacy.
The *Neijing* (Inner Canon) states: Sweat is the fluid of the Heart. When Yang acts upon Yin, it is called sweat. It also states: Labor consumes Qi, leading to panting and sweating. If one eats to fullness, sweat comes from the Stomach; if startled and essence is depleted, sweat comes from the Heart; if carrying heavy loads and traveling far, sweat comes from the Kidney; if running fast and fearing, sweat comes from the Liver; if moving the body and laboring bitterly, sweat comes from the Spleen.
The *Yuan Bing Shi* states: When the Heart is hot, sweat is produced.
Dongyuan (Li Dongyuan) stated: The southwest belongs to Kun Earth, corresponding to the Spleen and Stomach in humans. Human sweat is like the rain of heaven and earth; Yin nourishes dampness, forming mist, dew, and rain. The Heart is Sovereign Fire, governing heat; the Spleen and Stomach belong to Earth, governing dampness. The interaction of dampness and heat clearly produces sweat.
The classics state: Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) warms the muscles, fills the skin and hair, thickens the interstices, and controls the opening and closing of pores. It also states: Yang Qi guards the exterior and maintains solidity. Therefore, in individuals with weak constitutions, if invaded by Wind, Summerheat, or Dampness pathogens, the muscles fail to be warmed, the skin and hair fail to be filled, the interstices fail to be dense, and the opening/closing mechanism fails to be secure. This causes Yang Qi to leak outward, resulting in sweat. It also states: Qi deficiency leads to cold; although there may appear to be internal heat with steaming sweat, it ultimately transmits to severe cold. Knowing that it starts as internal heat, but due to exterior deficiency and loss of Yang, it cannot withstand external cold, it transmits inward to become interior cold, often forming Bi syndrome (obstruction) and cold patterns.
