The areas of the two cheeks correspond to the Liver and Lung, while the tip of the nose (Nose Tip) corresponds to the Spleen.
The center of the forehead corresponds to the Heart, and the chin area corresponds to the Kidney.
Internal organ pathologies manifest externally on the body shape; by observing these signs, one can discern the mechanism of disease.
A red face with cyanotic lips is generally deduced as a Heat Syndrome (Re Syndrome) of Cold Damage (Shanghan).
Cyanosis or blackness should be anticipated in Convulsive Disease (Jing Feng), which can be known from the condition of the lips and face.
A yellowish complexion indicates many cases of Food Stagnation Disease (Ji Bing); Malaria (Nuè Ji) also presents with this color.
A pale complexion suggests Diarrhea (Xie), while patients with Dysentery (Li) often have knitted brows.
A bluish-green face indicates Liver pathology; if contracted in Spring, it is hardest to treat.
Apply the principle of Metal overcoming Wood to deduce other situations accordingly.
The head is the convergence point of all Yang meridians; the face is the flourishing manifestation of Qi and Blood of the Five Zang organs; complexion is the splendor of the Spirit of the Five Zang organs. When the Five Zang organs are deficient and failing, the complexion must be withered. When the Five Zang organs are full and solid, the complexion must be radiant.
A lustrous complexion indicates life; a withered complexion indicates death. The Classics prioritize inspection (Wang Zhen), stating: "If one can inspect complexion and pulse, the treatment can be flawless."
A greenish face belongs to Liver disease; a red face belongs to Heart disease; a yellow face belongs to Spleen disease; a white face belongs to Lung disease; a black face belongs to Kidney disease. The appearance of various colors should be discussed based on the generating and overcoming cycles (Sheng Ke).
The Tiger's Mouth refers to the area where the hand crosses. The Three Passes refer to the three segments of the second finger. Excluding the thumb, the second finger is named the Index Finger (Shi Zhi). The first segment is the Initial Pass (Chu Guan), also known as the Wind Pass (Feng Guan). The second segment is the Middle Pass (Zhong Guan), also known as the Qi Pass (Qi Guan). The third segment is the Terminal Pass (Mo Guan), also known as the Life Pass (Ming Guan). For males, observe the left hand; for females, observe the right hand, viewing from the side. When Convulsive Disease (Jing Feng) first occurs, the vein emerges at the Tiger's Mouth or at the Initial Pass, mostly appearing red. If it transmits to the Middle Pass, it becomes red and purple. If the disease further transmits, the color becomes purple and cyan, indicating a deep and severe condition. If the color is cyan-black and the pattern is chaotic, the disease is deep. If pure black is seen, it is critical. Generally, red indicates mild Wind-Heat; red indicates severe Wind-Heat; purple indicates Heat and Convulsion; cyan indicates Accumulation and Convulsion. Equal parts of cyan and red indicate Convulsion, Accumulation, Wind, and Heat, primarily pointing to Acute Convulsive Disease (Ji Jing Feng). Cyan with faint purple, moving in and out, points to Chronic Convulsive Disease (Man Jing Feng). Purple, cyan, or black patterns mixed indistinctly, seemingly emerging but not fully, point to Chronic Spleen Wind (Man Pi Feng). Veins located at the Initial Pass are easy to treat; those exceeding the Middle Pass are difficult to treat; those penetrating the Terminal Pass are untreatable; veins penetrating all three passes straight through are generally untreatable. However, if the vein twists and curves inward, although the disease is severe, the syndrome is favorable, and effort can still be made. If the vein's momentum resembles a bow, curving outward toward the nail, survival is impossible. If the veins at the three passes resemble flowing pearls, connected in groups of three or five, or appearing on the face or body, this is an extremely critical and malignant condition.
