Rehmanniae Radix Preparata 30g, Braseae Semen (Stir-fried and Ground) 3g, Cornu Cervi Gelatinum 10g (Melted and taken in divided doses), Carbonis Zingiberis Rhizoma 10g, Ephedrae Herba 6g, Cinnamomi Ramulus 6g (Ground into powder, soaked in water and added to the decoction), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 6g.
Mumps (Acute Parotitis)
Patient Li X, male, five years old. In February 1964, he contracted parotitis, which had persisted for four or five days. Symptoms included fever, aversion to cold, and redness, swelling, and pain in both cheeks below the ears. His mother applied crushed leaves of *Ageratum conyzoides* externally and administered *Liushen Wan* internally, but with no obvious effect. He felt abdominal cold pain and discomfort after taking *Liushen Wan*, so he came for consultation. On initial examination, the child's chills and fever had not subsided, his cheeks remained swollen and painful, his abdomen was painful, he had no appetite, and he appeared spiritually exhausted. The pulse was wiry and fine, the tongue coating thin and white, with a slightly yellowish and greasy coating at the root. This condition is caused by an external invasion of wind-cold pathogenic factors, which obstruct the Taiyang and Shaoyang meridians, blocking the flow of meridian qi and collaterals. It belongs to the syndrome of simultaneous involvement of the Taiyang and Shaoyang meridians ("Tai-Shao Two-Yang Combined Disease"). The treatment plan was to use a combined formula of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) and Chaihu-based formulas with modifications.
Prescription: Bupleuri Radix 6g, Scutellariae Radix 6g, Codonopsis Radix (Mingdangshen) 9g, Cinnamomi Ramulus 9g, Paeoniae Radix Alba 6g, Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum 6g, Fresh Ginger 3 slices, Jujubae Fructus 3 pieces, Isatidis Radix 9g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 6g.
After one dose, the fever subsided, aversion to cold decreased, and the swelling and pain in the cheeks reduced significantly. Abdominal pain stopped, and appetite returned. The pulse became fine and slow, and the yellowish-greasy coating at the root of the tongue disappeared. Continuing with the above prescription, Scutellariae Radix was removed, and Manis Squama (Pangolin Scales) 6g and Patriniae Herba 6g were added. After two consecutive doses, the patient recovered.
Bi Syndrome due to Wind-Dampness in Joints
Patient Tian XX's wife, over thirty years old. In September of a certain year, she suffered from Bi Syndrome due to wind-dampness. There was pain and numbness in the joints of her right hand, with a sensation of burning heat between the bones, yet she also experienced chills and fear of cold. The illness had lasted for more than ten days. She had previously taken Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) plus Atractylodis Rhizoma and Angelicae Sinensis Radix without effect. The pain fluctuated in intensity, fixed in the shoulders and elbows, and was severe and unceasing. I examined her condition and previous prescriptions, concluding that this was a combination of wind, cold, and dampness pathogens obstructing the meridians. Yang Qi was insufficient to circulate and unblock the joints, leading to pain due to obstruction ("Bu Tong Ze Tong" - lack of flow causes pain). Although pungent-warm herbs like dried ginger and prepared aconite were used to dissipate cold-dampness, the inclusion of cloying and tonifying herbs like Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Atractylodis Rhizoma acted like "closing the door to catch the thief," making it difficult to resolve the pathogens. Therefore, following the previous formula, Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Atractylodis Rhizoma were removed, and Cinnamomi Ramulus, Asari Radix et Rhizoma, and Poria 24g were added. One dose showed significant effect, and after two doses, she recovered completely.
Prescription: Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fupian) 60g, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 15g, Cinnamomi Ramulus 24g, Asari Radix et Rhizoma 5g, Poria 24g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 10g.
Lower Limb Pain due to Blood Stasis and Yang Stagnation (Chronic Thrombophlebitis)
Patient Yang XX, male, 32 years old, from Kunming, working at the Provincial Construction Engineering Bureau.
Since October 1959, he experienced distending pain in the blood vessels of both lower legs, cyanotic skin color, and icy cold feet that never warmed up throughout the day. Walking slightly more caused weakness in the feet, unbearable distending pain, and difficulty walking. A hospital in Kunming diagnosed "Chronic Thrombophlebitis" with poor efficacy. Surgical treatment was suggested, but the patient refused and switched to Traditional Chinese Medicine. My diagnosis indicated internal deficiency of Yang Qi, with cold-dampness stagnating in the Lower Jiao. Insufficient Yang Qi failed to warm the sinews and vessels, leading to cold coagulation and blood stasis, causing pain due to blocked blood vessels. The pulse was deep, slow, and choppy; the tongue body had a bluish hue with petechiae and ecchymoses. The primary treatment method was to warm the Kidney, assist Yang, invigorate blood, and unblock collaterals. Formula used:
Prescription: Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fupian) 80g, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 30g, Cinnamomi Ramulus 50g, Northern Asari Radix et Rhizoma 10g, Lycopii Herba 10g, Persicae Semen 10g (Crushed), Carthami Flos 8g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 8g.
Upon initial intake, the distending pain worsened. Upon the second dose, pain and numbness occurred simultaneously, causing doubt, so he returned for a follow-up.
I informed him that this was the effect of Yang-tonifying herbs warming and transforming, promoting blood circulation and unblocking vessels, and advised continuing the medication. Following the original formula, Persicae Semen was removed, and Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) 9g and Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) 9g were added. After two doses, the pain gradually subsided, and the feet warmed up. At the third visit, the formula was modified to dispel cold, drain dampness, and unblock collaterals. After several doses, he recovered.
Eczema
Patient Li XX, female, 25 years old, from Guangdong, university teacher, residing in Kunming. She was generally healthy and rarely ill. In April 1965, she went on a business trip to a fertilizer plant in southern Yunnan, where the climate was hot and humid. One day after work, a gentle breeze blew against her face, causing a sudden feeling of facial heat and shivering. The next day, dense papules appeared all over her face, with red, tight, burning skin and unbearable itching. The factory clinic diagnosed "Allergic Eczema" and treated her with oral Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride and intravenous Calcium Gluconate. The facial rash did not subside, and new lesions appeared on the inner elbows, oozing clear yellow fluid when lightly wiped. Nighttime itching was severe, disturbing sleep and appetite. Returning to Kunming on May 1st, she consulted me. The pulse was floating and slow; the tongue was pale with a thin white coating. This was due to disharmony of Qi and Blood, failure of Ying and Wei harmonization, steaming by summerheat-dampness, and subsequent invasion of wind pathogen, resulting in eczema. The treatment principle was to harmonize Ying and Wei, disperse wind, drain dampness, and consolidate the exterior. The formula used was a combination of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) and Yupingfeng San (Jade Windscreen Powder) with modifications.
Prescription: Astragali Radix (Huangqi) 30g, Saposhnikoviae Radix 15g, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma 20g, Cinnamomi Ramulus 20g, Paeoniae Radix Alba 10g, Bombyx Batryticatus 5g, Acanthopanacis Senticulosi Radix 10g, Tribuli Fructus 10g, Cnidii Fructus 10g, Fresh Ginger 3 slices, Jujubae Fructus 3 pieces, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 10g.
Returning to the factory shortly after, she took two doses according to the prescription and recovered, with no recurrence thereafter.
Hair Loss
Patient Li XX, female, 24 years old, unmarried, student at Yunnan University. Since 1963, she noticed clumps of hair falling out, with no regrowth. The bald patches were round, coin-sized, varying in size. Over about two months, all her hair fell out, leaving her scalp bare and hairless. She was extremely anxious, disturbing her sleep and appetite. During the day, she was restless and unable to study calmly; at night, she had vivid dreams and could not sleep soundly. She sought medical help everywhere for months without success. Introduced by friends in March 1964, she came to my home for consultation, her head wrapped in a scarf. Asking about her condition, she shyly held back tears. The pulse was deep, fine, and weak; the tongue was pale with a thin, moist white coating. *Neijing* states: "The Kidney... is the residence of Essence, and its brilliance manifests in the hair." The Kidneys store the essence of the five Zang and six Fu organs. Hair is the surplus of Blood. Essence and Blood nourish each other; sufficient Essence leads to abundant Blood, and abundant Blood makes hair lustrous. Thus, hair thrives on Blood and grows from the root in the Kidney. This hair loss is not caused by ringworm or scabies, but by insufficiency of Essence and Blood. The treatment should focus on tonifying the Kidney and nourishing Blood. Formula used:
Prescription: Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fupian) 60g, Prepared Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Zhi Shouwu) 15g, Angelicae Sinensis Radix 15g, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata 15g, Cinnamomi Ramulus 12g, Stir-fried Ziziphi Spinosae Semen 15g, Qianzhangzhi 9g, Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus 9g (Stir-fried), Cornu Cervi Gelatinum 9g (Melted and added in divided doses), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 6g.
After eight consecutive doses, silver-white short downy hair began to grow on her scalp, and her sleep and appetite improved. Continuing the above formula, Psoraleae Fructus 12g and Cuscutae Semen 9g were added. Without stopping the medicine, she took fifteen more doses. After one month, her hair grew to over one inch long, with darkening color. Following the original formula, Qianzhangzhi was removed, and Cynomorii Herba 12g was added. After another twenty-plus doses, her hair continued to grow, turning progressively black. Half a year later, she had a full head of black hair, with no further loss.
Treatment of Hiccups Caused by Consuming Quinine Seeds (Shijunzi)
Patient Zhang XX, from Sichuan, residing in Kunming, has a ten-year-old son who often suffers from ascariasis abdominal pain, sallow complexion, emaciation, poor appetite, and teeth grinding with salivation during sleep. He purchased two taels of Quinine Seeds (Shijunzi) from a pharmacy for his son to expel roundworms but did not know the correct dosage. He peeled off the shells and let his son eat the kernels directly. Since the kernels are sweet and fragrant, the young boy consumed up to one tael in one day, triggering incessant hiccups, frequent retching, nausea, and loss of appetite. He came to consult me. Recalling my early training, I remembered my master saying that the shells of Quinine Seeds can cure hiccups and vomiting caused by consuming too many kernels. I introduced this method for trial. Upon returning home, he boiled one tael of Quinine Seed shells in water and gave it to his son. After several doses, the hiccups ceased the next day.
Note: Quinine Seed kernels are sweet and warm, entering the Spleen and Stomach meridians, commonly used to expel roundworms. Excessive consumption easily causes dizziness, hiccups, and vomiting, especially in those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency. However, the shells can counteract these side effects.
This is an effective folk remedy. If encountered, it may be tried.
Remedy for Complications of Measles Due to Excessive Exterior-Releasing Treatment
Patient Zheng XX's daughter, three years old, residing in Guanyin Bridge, Lu Chang, Huili County, Sichuan. The child developed measles in March 1913. After seeing a doctor and taking three doses of exterior-releasing herbs, the measles remained hidden, wanting to erupt but failing. She had fever, lethargy, listlessness, and sudden hardness and swelling under both cheeks. I consulted her case, believing that excessive use of exterior-releasing herbs damaged Qi and Blood, preventing the measles toxin from venting outward, causing it to condense under the cheeks. I prescribed Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonifies the Blood Decoction) combined with Shengma Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root and Cimicifuga Decoction) with a small amount of Menthae Haplocalycis Herba.
Prescription: Astragali Radix (Beihuangqi) 24g, Angelicae Sinensis Radix 24g, Cimicifugae Rhizoma 5g, Paeoniae Radix Alba 10g, Puerariae Lobatae Radix 6g, Menthae Haplocalycis Herba 3g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 3g.
On the next day's follow-up, the rash had erupted, turned rosy, and the cheek swelling had completely resolved. After one more dose of the original formula, the rash covered the whole body, the pulse calmed, and the body temperature normalized. She then took Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction to Build the Middle) for two doses to regulate and tonify, leading to recovery.
Note: This girl had a delicate constitution. Although she took many exterior-releasing herbs, fortunately, she did not take cold-cooling agents. Thus, using strong Qi and Blood tonification with slight lifting herbs yielded good results. Had cooling exterior-releasing herbs been mistakenly used, the consequences would have been dire. Since then, in treating measles, I have avoided excessive exterior release and sudden use of bitter-cold cooling or purgative agents, strictly adhering to pattern differentiation and treatment, achieving remarkable effects.
Two Cases of Measles Treatment
Case 1.
Eldest son (9 years old) and second son (7 years old) of Patient Li XX, residing outside the South Gate of Lufeng County, Yunnan Province, contracted measles together in March 1922. Initially, they had fever for two days, clear nasal discharge, cough, cold ears and fingers, slightly red eyes, tearing, and faint red rashes appearing on the face. They were given Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) plus Puerariae Lobatae Radix, Saposhnikoviae Radix, Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, and Cimicifugae Rhizoma, taken by both brothers.
Prescription: Cinnamomi Ramulus 15g, Paeoniae Radix Alba 15g, Puerariae Lobatae Radix 12g, Saposhnikoviae Radix 13g, Menthae Haplocalycis Herba 6g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 6g, Cimicifugae Rhizoma 6g, Fresh Ginger 24g, Jujubae Fructus 4 pieces.
After one dose, the measles gradually erupted and turned rosy. Subsequently, Puerariae Lobatae Radix and Cimicifugae Rhizoma were removed, and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Guangpi), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum, and Asari Radix et Rhizoma were added. After ingestion, the rash fully emerged and faded, the pulse calmed, and the body temperature normalized. One dose of Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction to Build the Middle) led to complete recovery.
Prescription: Astragali Radix (Huangqi) 30g, Cinnamomi Ramulus 15g, Paeoniae Radix Alba 15g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 6g, Fresh Ginger 30g, Jujubae Fructus 5 pieces, Maltose (Yitang) 30g.
(Note: Since both children had identical symptoms, they shared one dose with slightly heavier dosages. If taken separately, the dosage should be reduced.)
Case 2:
Son of Patient Chen XX, two years old, residing outside the South Gate of Lufeng County, Yunnan Province. The child developed measles in March 1922, having had fever for four days. Faint red rashes appeared on the head and face, pale and dull, accompanied by coma-like state, cough, and diarrhea. Due to his weak constitution, I dared not use strong exterior-releasing or cooling methods. Instead, I prescribed Maxing Guanxi Tang (Ephedra, Mahtian, and Aconite Decoction) combined with Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) and Fresh Ginger to warm the meridians, release the exterior, support healthy Qi, eliminate pathogens, stop cough, and arrest diarrhea.
Prescription: Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fupian) 24g, Ephedrae Herba 5g, Asari Radix et Rhizoma 3g, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium 6g, Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum 6g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 3g, Fresh Ginger 10g.
After ingestion, the rash gradually emerged, becoming rosier, but the child remained lethargic and spiritless. Then, Zitong Tang (Self-Flowing Decoction) was given for one dose.
Prescription: Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fupian) 30g, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 13g, Scallion White (Congbai) 4 stalks.
After ingestion, the rash fully erupted, body heat gradually subsided, but cough persisted. Following the above formula, Scallion White was removed, and Asari Radix et Rhizoma 3g, Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum 6g, Honghua (Carthami Flos) 6g, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 6g were added. After ingestion, the measles faded, the pulse calmed, the body temperature normalized, mental clarity returned, and recovery was smooth.
Note: All three children mentioned above had measles, were not mistreated, and recovered smoothly after medication. Had they been subjected to indiscriminate cold-cooling or unrestricted exterior-releasing treatments, complications would have arisen, potentially leading to premature death!
Severe Complications of Measles in Post-Illness Weak Constitution
Daughter of Patient Gan XX, over two years old, from Yao'an, residing in Kunming. The child developed measles in March 1924. Symptoms included fever, clear nasal discharge, cough, red eyes with tearing, cold ears and fingers, and faint red spots on the face. Because she had suffered from Slow Pi Feng (Chronic Spleen Wind) in the winter of the previous year and her constitution had not yet recovered under my treatment, I dared not use exterior-releasing or cold-cooling agents. Instead, I primarily prescribed Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) plus Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fupian) and Asari Radix et Rhizoma.
Prescription: Cinnamomi Ramulus 6g, Paeoniae Radix Alba 6g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 3g, Fresh Ginger 10g, Jujubae Fructus 2 pieces, Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fupian) 15g, Asari Radix et Rhizoma 3g.
After one dose, the measles gradually emerged; after two doses, they fully erupted; after three doses, they began to fade. However, there was slight irritability. Due to my lack of experience at the time, I suspected this was dryness from the warm herbs, so I removed Asari and Fupian from the formula, doubled the Paeoniae Radix Alba, added Angelicae Sinensis Radix to nourish Yin and Blood, and added Ophiopogonis Radix to clear irritability and heat.
Prescription: Cinnamomi Ramulus 6g, Paeoniae Radix Alba 12g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 3g, Fresh Ginger 10g, Jujubae Fructus 2 pieces, Angelicae Sinensis Radix 10g, Ophiopogonis Radix 10g.
Next day's follow-up. After taking the above formula, the child's pulse became urgent, fever and irritability worsened, panting and wheezing with phlegm rattling, alar flaring, cyanotic lips, white slippery tongue coating, and blue-black finger veins extending past the second joint, indicating impending convulsions. This condition showed signs of Yin excess forcing Yang outward. I immediately prescribed Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) plus Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui) and Poria to support Yang and suppress Yin.
Prescription: Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fupian) 24g, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 10g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 5g, Upper Cinnamomi Cortex (Shang Rougui) 6g (Ground, soaked in water, and added), Poria 12g, Syzygii Arillatus (Gongding) 1.5g.
After ingestion, wind movements occurred, and I was called back for consultation. The child exhibited limb spasms, opisthotonos, panting with phlegm rattling, alar flaring, inability to suckle, vomiting saliva when medicated, and green diarrhea. These symptoms were critical. However, the pulse was more relaxed than before, and body heat had dropped by 20-30%. This was a sign of the medicine fighting the disease, known as the "Mingxuan" phenomenon ("If the medicine does not cause dizziness/nausea, the chronic disease will not heal"). I advised the family not to worry. I immediately increased the dosage of the original formula.
Prescription: Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fupian) 50g, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 15g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma 6g, Upper Cinnamomi Cortex (Shang Rougui) 6g (Ground, soaked in water, and added), Poria 12g, Syzygii Arillatus (Gongding) 1.5g.
Instructed the family to brew and administer overnight. Next day's follow-up: Pulse calm, body cool, able to suckle, slight cough and panting persist, stool still loose but turning yellow, cyanotic color of face, lips, and finger veins receded. One more dose of the original formula stopped diarrhea and eased panting. Then, Astragali Radix (Huangqi) 12g and Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen) 6g were added to the formula, while Syzygii Arillatus and Poria were removed. After five consecutive doses, full recovery was achieved.
Note: For such conditions, if one assumes severe Yang-toxin heat and administers clearing-heat detoxifying agents, it will inevitably lead to critical complications. Even if knowledgeable practitioners use warm-hot remedies to rectify the situation, if the dosage is too light or the compatibility improper, it will still fail. Therefore, one must distinguish Yin and Yang, analyze deficiency/excess and cold/heat, and treat according to patterns to avoid misdiagnosis and mistreatment.
Measles Turning to Yin Syndrome Due to Mistaken Use of Exterior-Releasing Cooling Agents
Son of Patient Gan XX, three years old, from Yao'an, residing in Tuzhumiao Street Alley, Kunming.
The child developed measles in March 1924. According to his father, initially he had fever and cough. A doctor was consulted, and after two doses of lifting/exterior-releasing herbs supplemented with cooling agents, the measles appeared as faint spots, dull in color. Fever had persisted for five or six days, and the rash had not fully erupted. Upon examination, I saw he was listless and spiritless (symptoms of Shaoyin syndrome: desire to sleep). With fever lasting five to six days and measles not yet fully erupted, delay would surely lead to danger. I immediately prescribed Bitong Tang (White Connecting Decoction) for one dose.
