Commentary: The *Huangdi Nanjing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) states that the first degree of damage affects the skin and hair, manifesting as clustered skin and falling hair. The second degree of damage affects the blood vessels, manifesting as deficient and scanty blood vessels unable to nourish the five zang organs and six fu organs. The third degree of damage affects the muscles, manifesting as emaciated muscles where food intake fails to transform into flesh. The fourth degree of damage affects the sinews, manifesting as flaccid sinews unable to maintain control. The fifth degree of damage affects the bones, manifesting as bone atrophy where one cannot rise from bed; this is the pathology of "damage" (sun). It further states that for lung damage, one should tonify its qi; for heart damage, one should regulate ying and wei; for spleen damage, one should regulate diet and adapt to cold and warmth; for liver damage, one should soothe its interior (soothe liver qi stagnation); for kidney damage, one should tonify its essence. These are the general principles of tonification. Human qi and blood flow in harmony with heaven and earth, inevitably experiencing fullness and emptiness. With fullness and emptiness, there must be loss and gain. The appropriate treatment principle is: tonify what is deficient, supplement what is lacking. Treatment varies according to urgency. Thus, there is mild tonification (ping bu) and severe tonification (jun bu). Some tonify qi, some tonify essence, some tonify blood vessels, some strengthen sinews and bones. This extends to promoting beard and hair growth, preserving youthful appearance, with diverse treatment methods. In summary, treatment should be appropriate and moderate, avoiding excess and deficiency, which constitutes good medical practice.

Commentary: The interplay of yin and yang is called the Dao; deviation towards yin or yang is called disease. Without understanding the Dao, one cannot cure others' diseases. People greedily consume medicinal herbs, pursuing harsh and potent effects, which not only brings no benefit but also damages the harmonious qi. Therefore, medical texts discuss mild tonification methods, aiming solely to balance yin and yang.

Only the pearl on the spotted dragon's head can replenish the blood below the jade hall." They agreed to meet in September at Mount Emei. Ninggu went as scheduled and indeed saw him under Taixu Rock. He was taught cultivation techniques: "Your qi and blood are turbulent, deficient and exhausted. You should first take Mijiao Pill to tonify qi and blood and strengthen sinews and force, then you can practice these techniques." Ninggu then understood the verse about the spotted dragon. After taking it for over a year, his body became light and complexion moist. Using the technique, he lived to 170 years old. He left the formula for posterity.
Take five large elk antlers, or four, three, or two as one dose. If elk antlers are unavailable, use large deer antlers instead. Fresh ones from the current year are best. Look for the base of the antler where cutting marks are visible; this is usable. Flat bases where antlers have fallen off are unusable. First remove the top one cun. Cut the rest, each 7-8 cun long, to fit holding. Place in a container. Hang in flowing water to soak for ten nights. If no flowing water, draw water into a clean basin to soak. Change water every night. After ten days, remove, scrape off wrinkled skin, shave the white inner part with a sharp tool until the center is reached. Soak in clear rice wash for two nights. After the first night, dry, squeeze out old water, place on new silk cloth and sun-dry. Select and remove coarse bad bone skin and unevenly shaved parts. Soak in non-ash mellow wine in a porcelain vessel for two nights. The amount of wine depends on the quantity of herbs. After soaking is complete, put into a clean cauldron. First boil vigorously for the time it takes to eat one meal. Then simmer gently over low fire until bubbling like crab eyes. Stir constantly with a wooden whisk; change persons if tired, do not stop. Add wine occasionally. When the powder dissolves like thin glue, then add five sheng of cow milk and one sheng of butter. Gradually add the following medicines in order:
