(There are five categories in total)
(One treatise, eighty-three prescriptions, sixteen moxibustion methods)
The treatise states: Regarding the disease known as Nine Types of Scrofula (Jiu Lou), which manifests as scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis) with alternating chills and fever in the neck and axillae, what pathogenic qi causes it to arise? This is due to the toxic vapors of rat-scrofula chills and fever stagnating and remaining within the meridians without dissipating. The root of rat-scrofula lies internally in the zang organs, while its branches emerge externally above the neck and axillae. If the pathogen floats within the vessels but has not yet attached to the muscles, and externally turns into pus and blood, it is easy to eliminate. How should it be eliminated? It is answered: Follow the branch to guide the root, so that the pathogen may decline and the chills and fever may be cut off. Carefully follow the therapeutic principle to administer treatment, moving slowly back and forth to remove it. For those as small as wheat grains, one acupuncture insertion brings improvement, and three insertions lead to recovery. How to determine survival or death? It is answered: Turn the eyes upward to observe the pupils. If red vessels run vertically through the pupil, seeing one vessel indicates death in one year; seeing one and a half vessels indicates death in one and a half years; seeing two vessels indicates death in two years; seeing two and a half vessels indicates death in two and a half years; seeing three vessels indicates death in three years. If the red vessels do not penetrate downward through the pupil, the condition is treatable.
Whenever scrofula first appears on the sides of the neck or in the axillae, it is about to develop into a fistula (Lou). One should abstain from the Five Pungent Spices (Wu Xin), alcohol, wheat products, and all hot-natured foods. In cases of fistula resembling hard carbuncles (Shi Yong) appearing in clusters, with nodules in both necks and axillae that are neither painful nor hot, practitioners should apply Lian Shi San (Polished Stone Powder) externally and internally administer Wu Xiang Lian Qiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction) to purge the accumulation. (Both prescriptions are found in Volume 22, under the section on Carbuncles and Ulcers). For those already ulcerated, treat according to the methods for carbuncles. For various fistulas with nodules that have not yet ruptured, use fire needles to puncture directly into the center of the nodule; there will be no case that does not heal. What are the Nine Types of Fistula? First is Wild Wolf Fistula; second is Rat Fistula; third is Mole Cricket Fistula; fourth is Bee Fistula; fifth is Ant Fistula; sixth is White Worm Fistula; seventh is Floating Dampness Fistula; eighth is Scrofula Fistula; ninth is Pulse-Shifting Fistula.
To treat Wild Wolf Fistula: It begins with swelling in the neck, having no head but possessing a root, arising above the Clavicular Fossa (Quepen) and extending to cause swelling at the root of the ear. This arises from sorrow and indignation, causing Qi to rise upward without descending; its root lies in the Liver. (Another version states the Lung). Use Kong Qing (Azurite) as the principal herb, with Shang Lu (Phytolacca Root) as the assisting formula.
Kong Qing Nao (Azurite Brain) (each 2 fen) Gan (Liver) (one whole organ) Shang Lu (Phytolaccae Radix) Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) Fu Ren Ru Cao (Placentae Humanae / Women's Placenta) Bie Jia (Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum) Ban Mao (Mylabris)
The above sixteen ingredients are processed and sifted into powder. Take one Fang Cun Bi (approx. 3-5 grams) with wine, three times daily. Administer for fifteen days.
