Treats malaria caused by spleen heat, presenting with thirst or no thirst, internal damage by heat qi leading to cessation of diarrhea, causing chills, abdominal pain, and borborygmus (intestinal rumbling).
Hengshan (Radix Dichroae, 3 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, half liang) Zhi mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, each 1 liang)
Grind the above four herbs into powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take ten pills with wine before the onset of the fever; take one dose when the fever is about to start, and another dose when the fever is at its peak.
Treats phlegm accumulation in the chest due to lung heat, which comes and goes unpredictably and transforms into malaria. The condition causes coldness in the heart, severe fever, and palpitations or hallucinations after the fever subsides.
Hengshan (Radix Dichroae, 3 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, half liang) Shumi (Semen Sorghi, 320 grains)
Chop the above three herbs, boil in seven sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses. Ensure all three doses are consumed by the time the malaria attack begins.
Another prescription: Treats malaria induced by kidney heat, causing a sensation of chilliness, lower back and spine pain with restlessness, difficulty in defecation, blurred vision, body tremors, and cold hands and feet.
Hengshan (Radix Dichroae, 3 liang) Wumei (Fructus Mume, 33 pieces) Zhuye (Folium Bambusae, 1 sheng, sliced) Xiangchi (Semen Sojae Preparatum, 8 he) Congbai (Caulis Allii Fistulosi, one handful)
Chop the above five herbs, boil in nine sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses. Ensure all doses are consumed by the time the malaria attack begins.
The five zang organs all have malaria syndromes, while the six fu organs generally do not, except for the stomach fu organ. Stomach malaria causes hunger immediately upon feeling ill, but the patient cannot eat; eating leads to distension and abdominal enlargement. The treatment formula is as follows:
Lilu (Radix Veratri) Hengshan (Radix Dichroae) Zaojiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, each 1 liang) Badou (Semen Crotonis, 30 seeds)
First, stir-fry Lilu and Zaojiao until they turn yellow, then pound them together into powder. Mix with honey to form pills the size of a small bean. Take one pill in the morning and one pill at the peak of the fever. Do not overeat during the day. (Note: *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* does not include Hengshan and Niuxi.)
For liver malaria, puncture the Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian until blood appears. For heart malaria, puncture the Hand-Shaoyin Heart meridian. For spleen malaria, puncture the Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian. For lung malaria, puncture the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridians. For kidney malaria, puncture the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney and Foot-Taiyang Bladder meridians. For stomach malaria, puncture the Foot-Taiyin Spleen and Hand-Yangming Large Intactine meridians, or puncture transverse vessels to bleed. In all cases of moxibustion for malaria, first ask where the symptoms started. Moxa that area first. If symptoms start from the head and neck, pre-moxa the Dazhui (GV14) acupoint before onset, continuing until past the expected time of onset. If symptoms start from the lower back and spine, moxa the Shenshu (BL23) acupoint with 100 moxa cones (zhuang). If symptoms start from the arms, moxa the Sanjian (LI3) acupoint. For malaria, moxa Shangxing (GV23) and Dazhui (GV14) until reaching 100 zhuang by the time of onset. Use moxa cones the size of a millet grain. Laypeople often misunderstand this and use excessively large cones. If slight discomfort is felt, moxa Baihui (GV20) with 7 zhuang. If it recurs, add another 7 zhuang. For extremely difficult cases, limit to three sessions. Have the patient stand on the ground, wrap a thread around the foot once, fold it in half, and moxa from Dazhui (GV14) to Baihui (GV20), using 7 zhuang at the end of the thread. The cone should be the size of a small bean. Additionally, moxa Fengchi (GB20) twice, 3 zhuang each. For all types of malaria regardless of duration, have the patient lie supine. Measure the distance between the nipples with a thread, fold it in half, and moxa downwards from the nipple. The number of zhuang corresponds to the patient's age, left side for males, right side for females. For all five-zang malaria, moxa Chize (LU5) with 7 zhuang. This point is located in the center of the elbow crease, slightly proximal to the arterial pulse. For various malaria cases where the pulse is imperceptible, prick the spaces between the ten fingers to bleed; the disease will cease once blood flows. First, observe any red spots on the body resembling small beans and treat them all. Puncturing the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian to bleed cures malaria. Shangxing (GV23) is the primary point for malaria. It is located in the depression one cun directly above the anterior hairline, capable of holding a bean. Moxa 7 zhuang. First select Shangxing, then Tianyou (TE16) and Fengchi (GB20). For malaria occurring in the late afternoon, Linqi (GB41) is indicated. It is located in the depression five fen above the anterior hairline, lateral to the outer canthus. Moxa 7 zhuang. Excess-type malaria presents with lower back and back pain; deficiency-type presents with nasal congestion or epistaxis. Feiyang (BL58) is indicated. It is located seven cun above the external malleolus. Moxa 7 zhuang. For malaria with excessive sweating, lower back pain preventing flexion and extension, eyes feeling like they are protruding, and neck feeling like it is being pulled out, Kunlun (BL60) is indicated. It is located in the depression posterior to the external malleolus and superior to the calcaneus. Moxa 3 zhuang.
