1. Masturbation is a behavior that severely damages the body and spirit. What masturbation consumes is "Jing" (Essence), which is connected to the bone marrow and brain marrow, stored by the Kidney (Zang organ responsible for storing essence and governing reproduction), serving as the foundation of life and the source of blood production in the human body. Excessive consumption of Jing leads to hollow bone marrow and insufficient brain marrow, causing premature aging or death of life; extreme physical weakness is merely a secondary manifestation.
2. The human body relies on Blood and Qi (Vital Energy) for nourishment, and the source of Blood and Qi is diet. Unconsumed Blood and Qi transform into Jing during deep sleep, are stored in the Kidney, and sealed within the bones to meet unexpected needs. If consumption is low and storage is high, it guarantees longevity and health; if consumption is high and storage is low, it is the premise of aging and short life. Both masturbation and sexual intercourse manifest as the depletion of Jing. The abnormal accumulation of this depletion implies a reduction in quality of life and an early end to the life process.
3. Masturbation not only damages the body's vitality but also harms emotional stability, leading to mental lethargy, weak willpower, indecisiveness, vacillation, irritability, perversity, suspicion, and fear. When facing matters, one may either act rashly or retreat, lacking patience, perseverance, and the confidence and courage to win. These are all results of Essence deficiency failing to generate Qi.
4. Masturbation also affects intelligence. Long-term masturbation causes obvious damage to memory and thinking abilities; the inability to cope with learning tasks and the rapid decline in academic performance are the most obvious manifestations. This is the result of Essence deficiency failing to generate Qi, and Qi deficiency failing to generate Shen (Spirit).
5. The uncontrolled and rampant nature of masturbation is related to misleading Western medical theories. Junior high school physiology textbooks even claim that moderate masturbation is beneficial to health, arguing that semen is merely a mixture of a small amount of protein and a large amount of water, insignificant to the body. It is precisely this arbitrary misdirection and instigation by such fallacies that causes physically and mentally immature adolescents to lower their guard against masturbation, dare to try it, eventually become addicted, unable to control themselves, and embark on the irreversible path of damaging Essence, Qi, and Shen!
6. Masturbation has severe addictive properties. Once addicted, it is difficult to restrain. This is the reason why patients clearly feel physical discomfort after masturbation yet persist in it tirelessly.
7. Masturbation extracts the body's reserve energy through shortcuts, preventing the body from initiating emergency measures during sudden changes, leading to the proliferation of many chronic diseases that linger and worsen over time.
8. Masturbation overdrafts the body's generative Qi, greatly reducing reproductive ability. Even if the seed has not completely lost its vital energy, after sowing, germinating, sprouting, flowering, and fruiting, it inevitably withers and lacks vitality. These are all results of damage to the generative Qi of the "Official of Strength" (referring to the Kidney) and a decline in skill/function.
9. Masturbation is not uncontrollable. With firm confidence and the courage to win, if the Heart is clear and quiet, the Kidney can be stable; if Shen does not move recklessly, Jing will not be wasted. Cultivate uplifting sentiments, understand principles and affairs thoroughly, so that actions follow the mind's turn, resulting in clarity above and peace below.
10. Quitting masturbation is the prerequisite for treating the various consequences caused by masturbation damaging Essence. It is like inflating a tire; if you start inflating without fixing the leak, it will soon be empty again, making the inflation meaningless.
Zhou Simin in *Shou Kang Bao Jian* says: "Desire for sex is the first hurdle for youth. If this hurdle is not passed, no matter how talented or learned one is, it is of no use, because everything depends on the body as the root. The flesh-and-blood body exists for long due to Jing, Qi, and Blood. Blood is Yin, Qi is Yang; the condensation of Yin and Yang forms Jing. Jing connects with bone marrow, goes up to the Sea of Marrow, and down to the Weilu point, being the supreme treasure of the human body. Therefore, if the Water of Tianyi (Kidney Water) does not dry up, ears and eyes remain sharp, limbs strong, just as water nourishes all things; like oil nourishing a lamp, as long as the oil does not dry up, the lamp does not go out. Thus, ancient scholars considered the interaction between Heart and Kidney as the Hexagram Ji Ji (After Completion). The Heart is the Minister Fire. Fire naturally flares upward, often riding on unsettled Blood and Qi to ignite lustful thoughts. Once the Minister Fire moves, the Ministerial Fire of the Liver and Kidney all move, Kidney Water is scorched, leaking outward and exhausting inward. Men reach seminal emission at sixteen; ancients married only after thirty, presumably to strengthen sinews and bones and preserve Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Moreover, with slightly settled Blood and Qi, one would not deplete oneself like youths. In recent times, young people marry too early, before sinews and bones are firm, scattering Yuan Shen (Original Spirit); before marriage, they pull up the roots; after marriage, they further cut the shoots. Within a few years, Jing and Blood vanish, leaving them breathless and weak. Though possessing human form, they quickly join the dead. This is indeed due to the sons' incompetence, but also the brothers' and fathers' failure in teaching. Now I establish three major rules: Diligence in occupation to labor the mind; distinction between men and women to prevent gradual indulgence; caution in friendships to cut off temptation. Thus, internal and external cultivation complement each other, virtue advances daily, and the way of fathers and brothers is fulfilled." How can one not strive?
Clinical Manifestations and Treatment Methods of Consequences of Masturbation
I. Deficient Sweating. Long-term masturbation damages Kidney Essence while simultaneously affecting Qi. Essence deficiency fails to secure Qi, typically manifesting as continuous deficient sweating, hot and dry hands and feet, vexation, and dry mouth.
At this stage, Essence is damaged first, followed by Qi damage; convergence is insufficient, and dispersion is excessive. Treatment should focus primarily on nourishing Yin. Prescriptions:
1. Mai Wei Di Huang Wan (Lycium and Schisandra Rehmannia Pill). Administration time: 7:00 AM, 5:00 PM. Dosage: 1-2 pills. Concentrated pills: 9-18 grains.
2. Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Emperor of Heaven's Special Formula to Tonify the Heart). Administration time: 11:00 AM. Dosage: 2 bags. One pill.
II. Diarrhea. While damaging congenital True Qi, masturbation inevitably affects acquired Spleen and Stomach functions. Loss of Spleen transformation sources leads to ineffective transportation and transformation, causing sinking and diarrhea, especially severe upon exposure to cold.
At this stage, Yin damage extends to Yang, with severe Qi damage. Treatment should focus primarily on tonifying Yang. For severe cases, use Li Zhong method; for mild cases, use Bu Zhong method. Prescriptions:
1. (Severe) Fu Zi Li Zhong Wan (Aconite and Ginger Regulate the Middle Pill). Administration time: 7:00 AM. Dosage: 1-2 pills, concentrated pills 15-25 grains.
2. (Mild) Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Pill). Administration time: 7:00 AM, 3:00 PM. Dosage: 1-2 pills. Concentrated pills 8-16 grains.
III. Chronic Prostatitis. Clinical manifestations mainly include lower abdominal distension and pain, damp scrotum, sweaty groin, or cold pain in the testicles, potentially varicose veins, difficult urination, urinary hesitation, splitting stream, or incomplete emptying. Concurrently, there is heat in the soles, soreness and weakness in the waist, potentially cold pain.
At this stage, Yang Qi fails to store, dissipating outward, while Cold Evil penetrates deeply and stagnates internally. The root of Yang escapes outward, appearing in the Jueyin Wood position. Treatment should guide Dragon back to the sea and lead Fire back to its origin. One must not lightly speak of extinguishing fire and clearing heat, as Ministerial Fire is the root of generation; it can only be assisted, not suppressed. Prescriptions:
1. (Mild) Gui Fu Di Huang Wan (Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Rehmannia Pill). Administration time: 5:00 PM, before sleep. Dosage: 1-2 pills.
2. (Severe) Wu Mei Wan (Mume Pill). Administration time: Before sleep. Dosage: 1-2 pills.
IV. Hyperactive Yang. This situation is relatively rare, manifesting as steaming bone tidal fever, weak waist and knees, inability to stand for long periods, intense heat in the soles, stabbing pain in the heel root, persistent erection, and craving for rich, greasy foods.
At this stage, Yin is deficient and Yang is hyperactive; Fire is vigorous and Water is depleted; Water fails to nourish Wood; shallow Water allows the Dragon to rise high. Urgent treatment requires tonifying Yin to match Yang, vigorously tonifying True Yin, extinguishing evil fire, and controlling solar flare. Prescriptions:
1. (Mild) Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). Administration time: 5:00 PM, before sleep. Dosage: 1-2 pills.
2. (Severe) Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Rehmannia Pill). Administration time: 5:00 PM, before sleep. Dosage: 1-2 pills.
V. General Tea Substitute Formula (This formula can be used first for adjustment or last for recovery):
Ophiopogon Radix (Maidong) 4g, Schisandra Fruit (Wuweizi) 2g, Codonopsis Root (Dangshen) 5g, Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 8g, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) 5g, Poria (Fuling) 4g, Prepared Licorice Root (Zhigancao) 5g, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 5g, Black Aconite Root (Heifuzi) 6g, Dodder Seed (Tusizi) 6g.
Steep in boiling water. Brew one cup at 7:00 AM and another at 5:00 PM. Take one dose per day. Can be taken continuously for ten doses.
VI. Guizhi Fuzi Granules (This formula is mainly used for confusion, heavy head, soreness, heaviness, and fatigue in the waist and back):
Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 10g, Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui) 5g, Prepared Licorice Root (Zhigancao) 5g, Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) 5g, Jujube (Dazao) 2 pieces (split open), Black Aconite Root (Heifuzi) 5g, Dodder Seed (Tusizi) 5g.
Steep in boiling water. Take one cup at 7:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 4:00 PM. Can be taken continuously for seven doses.
VII. Danggui Sini Lizhong Granules (Indications: Poor appetite, abdominal distension, dull testicular pain, damp scrotum, sore waist and legs, and various symptoms of chronic prostatitis):
Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) 5g, Codonopsis Root (Dangshen) 5g, Prepared Licorice Root (Zhigancao) 5g, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 5g, Black Aconite Root (Heifuzi) 6g, Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui) 7g, Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 8g, White Peony Root (Baishao) 3g, Asarum Root (Xixin) 3g, Tetrapanax Medulla (Tongcao) 2g, Peach Kernel (Taoren) 3g, Jujube (Dazao) 2 pieces (split open).
Steep in boiling water. Take one cup at 7:00 AM, 4:00 PM, and before sleep. Take continuously for five doses (symptoms leaning middle) or eight doses (leaning lower).
Precautions: Three parts treatment, seven parts nursing. This applies to all diseases, especially masturbation. During medication, try to maintain regular作息 (daily routine), ensuring sleep before 10:00 PM every day. Moderate exercise during the day is appropriate, but avoid excessive fatigue. If symptoms from various formulas appear simultaneously, they can be combined, following the administration times and dosages above. Silence nourishes Qi, closing eyes nourishes Blood, sleep nourishes Essence, stillness nourishes Shen. When alone, pay attention to your mind; when with others, keep watch silently. Aim high, set intentions, constantly sharpen yourself, and do not deceive yourself. Over time, you will naturally lack the idle mind and mood to engage in masturbation. Men should strive for strength; gentlemen should encourage themselves! Wishing success in revolution and recovery of body and mind!
Four Discussions on Medicine
Theory of Four Images, Five Flavors, Substance, and Function
The five flavors enter the five Zang organs. Except for Central Earth, the directions of the flavors of Metal and Wood, Water and Fire in the four directions are exactly opposite to the direction of the "Qi" of the entering Zang organ. For example, the Liver: its nature is primarily generating, ascending, and dispersing, moving upward and outward, while its flavor is sour, primarily converging, moving downward and inward. Its nature and flavor directions are exactly opposite. Actually, there is a relationship here between "Substance" (Ti) and "Function" (Yong). The nature of the Zang belongs to "Function," while the flavor entering the substance acts as a restraint on its nature. Excessive restraint is also a form of "damage." The same sour flavor can both tonify the Substance of Wood and drain the Function of Wood. Hence, it is said, "Pungent tonifies, Sour drains" (*Zangqi Fazhi Lun*: The Liver desires dispersion, urgently eat pungent to disperse it; use pungent to tonify, sour to drain). This actually refers to the "Function." The Lung's nature is primarily converging, while its flavor is pungent, primarily dispersing, exactly opposite to the Lung's nature. The Lung resides upper, governs descent, its Substance belongs to Yang, and its Function belongs to Yin. This Yin Function primarily converges, hence it is said, "Sour tonifies." The sour flavor tonifies its "Function," not its "Substance." Regarding the Lung's Function, it is stated, "Use sour to tonify, pungent to drain" (The Lung desires retention, urgently eat sour to retain it). Furthermore, regarding Water and Fire: Fire's nature is naturally flaming upward, but its flavor is bitter, bitter primarily stores internally and can persevere; Water's nature is moistening and descending, while its flavor is salty, salty flavor transforms externally and can soften and scatter. Water nature is cold, cold nature primarily converges and solidifies, but its flavor instead primarily softens and scatters; Heart nature is hot, hot nature primarily flares and ascends, while its flavor is bitter, which instead can persevere. The natures of flavor and property mutually function and supplement each other. In summary, the flavors of Heart and Kidney, Liver and Lung can complement each other: Metal's flavor can tonify Liver and Wood; Wood's flavor can tonify Lung and Metal; Fire's flavor can solidify Kidney ("The Kidney desires solidity, urgently eat bitter to solidify it"); Water's flavor can soften Heart ("The Heart desires softness, urgently eat salty to soften it"). These four flavors belong to the Four Images, having a complementary relationship among them. Earth, because it resides in the center, is not discussed together with the four dimensions, using sweet flavor to harmonize hundred medicines and warm-tonify the Four Images. This is closely related to medication usage. For instance, Shengmai San is a medicine to tonify Lung; Guizhi is a medicine to tonify Liver; Baishao is a medicine to drain Liver; Mahuang is a medicine to drain Lung. Lung deficiency cannot use Mahuang. Mahuang Tang drains excess pathogens in the Lung; Shengmai San tonifies positive deficiency in the Lung. However, none can lack sweet medicine to harmonize.
Sayings on Appropriateness and Taboos of Medication in Four Seasons
Medication in the four seasons has its respective appropriatenesses and taboos. Following appropriateness and avoiding taboos yields the benefit of medicinal power without harm. This matter is of great significance and cannot be ignored:
In the three months of Spring, this is called Fa Chen (Developing the Old). Heaven and Earth grow together, all things flourish. It is the time when Yang generates and Yin grows. In hexagrams, it is Zhen, its image is Wood, with one Yang line below and two Yin lines above. Yang Qi carries Yin outward, representing generation. If Spring Qi is excessive, there is much Yang and little Yin, Water fails to nourish Wood, Wind Qi moves internally. Nourish Yin to converge it. Medicines should include Shaoyao Gancao Tang, Xiao Jianzhong Tang, Qiju Dihuang Wan, etc. Greatly taboo are items that lift, disperse, assist Yang, and suppress Yin. If Spring Qi is insufficient, there is little Yang and much Yin, generation is unsmooth, Yin congeals and Yang depresses. Prolonged depression generates Damp-Heat. Assist Yang to ascend it. Medicines should include Danggui Sini Tang, Guizhi Jia Guizhi Tang, Guizhi Jia Fuzi Tang, Guizhi Fuzi Tang, etc. Greatly taboo are items that clear and drain Damp-Heat, assist Yin, and attack Yang.
In the three months of Summer, this is called Fan Xiu (Flourishing and Beautiful). Heaven and Earth Qi intersect, all things flower and bear fruit. It is the time when Yang reaches extremity and Yin reverses. In hexagrams, it is Li, its image is Fire, with two Yang lines outside and one Yin line inside. Yang extremizes outward, Yin Essence generates internally. Flavor remains bitter and astringent, representing growth. If Summer Qi is excessive, there is much Yang and little Yin, dispersion is unregulated, Yin Essence leaks outward, sweat flows profusely. Assist Yin to collect it. Medicines should include Zhigancao Tang, Huanglian Ejiao Tang, Maimendong Tang, Shengmai San combined with Shaoyao Gancao Tang, etc. Greatly taboo are items that strengthen fire, scatter Qi, assist Yang, and attack Yin. If Summer Qi is insufficient, there is little Yang and much Yin, dark clouds obscure the sun, Earth Qi covers brightness, Shen cannot reach outward, head becomes heavy and confused. Benefit Fire to eliminate it. Medicines should include Guizhi Gancao Tang, Fuzi Lizhong Tang, Guizhi Fuzi Tang, etc. Greatly taboo are items that collect Yin and drain Yang. At Summer Solstice, Yang extremizes; pungent-warm substances are taboo, lest they damage the mechanism of Yang-Ming Yin reversal. Those with Yin excess are not included in this example.
In the three months of Autumn, this is called Rong Ping (Containing and Level). Heaven Qi becomes urgent, Earth Qi becomes clear. It is the time when Yang kills and Yin stores. In hexagrams, it is Dui, its image is Metal, with one Yin line above and two Yang lines below. Yin Qi covers Yang entering inward, representing convergence. If Autumn Qi is excessive, there is much Yin and little Yang, Qi reverses upward. Assist Yang to open it. Medicines should include Ganjiang Gancao Tang, Lizhong Tang, Chaihu Guizhi Ganjiang Tang, etc. If Autumn Qi is insufficient, there is little Yin and much Yang, Yang Qi fails to converge, Metal Qi transforms, Fire Qi flares upward, Dryness and Excess arise. Nourish Yin to converge it, combine Yang to descend it. Medicines should include Shengmai San, Maimendong Tang, Baihu Jia Renshen Tang, or even San Chengqi Tang, etc. Greatly taboo are items that assist fire and punish metal.
In the three months of Winter, this is called Bi Cang (Closing and Storing). Water freezes, earth cracks, Essence and Qi gather inward. It is the time when Yin extremizes and Yang reverses. In hexagrams, it is Kan, its image is Water, with one Yang line inside and two Yin lines outside. Yin extremizes inward, Yang Qi generates internally. Qi is still weak, representing return and storage. If Winter Qi is excessive, there is much Yin and little Yang, Qi mechanism blocks, Yang Qi declines, Blood and Qi stagnate. Assist Yang to raise it. Medicines should include Sini Tang, Zhenwu Tang, Fuzi Tang, etc. Greatly taboo are items that nourish Yin, descend fire, and use bitter-cold to attack Yang. If Winter Qi is insufficient, there is little Yin and much Yang, storage order does not operate, Essence and Qi leak outward, disturbance and unrest occur. Strengthen Water to control it. Medicines should include Maiwei Dihuang Wan, Shenqi Wan, Zishen Wan, Fengsui Dan, etc. Greatly taboo are items that support Yang and suppress Yin. At Winter Solstice, Yin extremizes; bitter-cold substances are taboo, lest they damage the mechanism of Jueyin Yang reversal. Those with Yang excess are not included in this example.
During Changxia (Late Summer) when Earth reigns, transforming and generating all things, one should tonify Qi and eat essence, carefully harmonize the five flavors, and taboo draining Yin or Yang, attacking, consuming, and scattering.
