It is appropriate to use bitter-cold herbs, while aromatic herbs are contraindicated. After taking the medicine, cold water should be avoided; violating this rule will lead to suppuration with delayed efficacy.

Chaihu Qinggan Tang (Bupleurum Decoction for Clearing Liver Heat): Treats Bin Ju (abscess at the temple) in its early stage. Regardless of whether it is a Yin or Yang syndrome, exterior or interior syndrome, this formula can be used.
Formula: Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Shengdi Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii), Gancao Jie (Joint of Radix Glycyrrhizae). Equal parts.

Guijin Wan (Precious Gold Pill), Bawei Dihuang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill), Canzhu Dan (Purple Pearl Pellet), Shenshou Weisheng San (Divine Protection Health Powder), Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction), Tuoli Xiaodu San (Supporting Interior and Eliminating Toxin Powder), Liuwu Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill), Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Decoction for Boosting Middle-Jiao and Replenishing Qi), Lafan Wan (Beeswax and Alum Pill), Yueju Wan (Pill for Resolving Stagnation) (all see Volume 1), Chansu Wan (Toad Venom Pill), Badingsan (Ding Extracting Powder) (see Ding Section), Shenmiao Bageng Fang (Miraculous Root-Pulling Formula) (see Needle Section), Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) (see Luoli Section), Jiufa for Various Syndromes (see Volume 1), Huanglian Jiuku Tang (Coptis Decoction for Saving from Suffering) (see Neck Section).
Meridians: All Yang meridians converge on the face. Summarizing their affiliations, only the Stomach Meridian originates at the nose, intersects at the root of the nose, enters the upper teeth, flanks the mouth and encircles the lips, follows the Jiache point, ascends anterior to the ear passing through the Guest Master point. Therefore, the human face belongs to the Yangming category. From the nose straight up to the forehead belongs to the Du Meridian. The inner canthus upward belongs to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, and downward to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The pupil upward belongs to the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, and downward to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The outer canthus upward belongs to the Hand and Foot-Shaoyang meridians. Chengjiang belongs to the Ren Meridian and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.
Quan Yang (Cheek Ulcer): Manifests as swelling and pain of the zygomatic bone, with intense alternating chills and fever, caused by Wind-Heat in Yangming. It is suitable to use Shenshou Weisheng San, added with Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), decocted with water and wine. Or use Guijin Wan.
Quan Ju (Cheek Carbuncle): Initially like a pine nut, slightly swollen, red, and itchy, gradually enlarging like a phlegm nodule or like a toxic lump. Caused by accumulated Heat in Yangming. It is suitable to use Chansu Wan, and Weisheng San added with Nanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis, processed with gallbladder bile). The Ling Shu Jing states: Heart disease causes redness of the cheeks, suitable to descend Heart Fire, such as using Huanglian Anshen Wan. It also says: Kidney disease causes blackness of the cheeks and forehead, suitable to nourish Kidney Water, such as using Dihuang Wan. Thus, diseases of the cheek cannot be exclusively attributed to the Yangming meridian.
Quan Ding (Cheek Ding): Initially like a millet grain, numb, itchy, hard, and painful, white in color with a depressed apex, with alternating chills and fever. It is suitable to use the picking method, apply Badingsan, and mash fresh Juhua Ye (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici Folium) to apply to the swollen area. Internally take Chansu Wan, or moxa Pianli (SI6) for fourteen moxa cones.
Mian Fadu (Facial Toxic Sores): Boils on the face that are swollen and painful, caused by Wind-Heat lodging in the Yangming meridian. It is suitable to use Liangge San (Cool the Chest Powder) added with Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), and Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae). Apply Qingliang Xiaodu San (Cooling and Detoxifying Powder). If not swollen or painful, use Tuoli Xiaodu San.
Mian Youfeng (Wandering Wind of the Face): Initially slight itching, then feeling like ants crawling, with swelling of the face and eyes, accompanied by pain. Caused by stagnating Heat in Yangming. It is suitable to use Liangge San added with Shengma, Gegen, Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), and Niubangzi. Externally apply wind-dispelling and skin-moistening medicines.
Sa Yong (Parotid Swelling): Swelling that is pointed and red indicates Wind-Heat; swelling that is flat and pale indicates Damp-Heat. Both belong to the Stomach. For strong constitutions, use Heiniu San (Black Ox Powder) to purge, or Jiawei Xiaodu Yin (Modified Detoxifying Decoction) to dissipate. Avoid external applications, fearing toxin attacking the throat.
Jia Yang (Cheek Ulcer): Occurs above the Jiache point below the ear, also known as Jin Sai. Initially like a millet grain, gradually enlarging to the size of a bean, also caused by Stomach Heat. For strong constitutions, use Guijin Wan to purge, or Xijiao Shengma Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Cimicifuga Decoction). If suppurated, use Neituo San added with Qianghuo and Duhuo. After ulceration, healing is difficult, often involving bone attachment, eventually forming a fistula. Steam therapy is suitable, moxa Sidu points for twenty-one to forty-nine cones.
Jia Du (Cheek Toxin): Occurs about half an cun anterior to Jia Yang, shaped like an egg, hard and difficult to suppurate, with constant pus discharge, lasting for years without healing. Internally take agents for supporting interior and resolving hardness, or moxa Tianjing (SI10) for twenty-one to forty-nine cones.
Gu Cao Feng (Bone Trench Wind): Occurs at the junction of the jaw and connecting bone, also known as Ya Cha Fa. Starts anterior to the ear, extending to the cheek and neck, with hidden pain in bones and sinews, eventually becoming diffuse swelling, trismus, and malaria-like chills and fever. This is caused by anger injuring the Liver and overthinking injuring the Spleen. Initially hard and difficult to resolve, later difficult for the sore to close. Initially, moxa the swollen area and five fen below the earlobe, seven cones each, covered with plaster. Apply Ligong Dingzi (Palace Offering Paste) to the swollen area. For internal swelling of the jaw, prick with a thread needle to remove bad blood, apply Bingpeng San (Ice and Borax Powder) to resolve internal and external toxins. Take Qingyang Sanhuo Tang (Clearing Yang and Dispersing Fire Decoction). If after ulceration, add Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), and Huoxiang (Herba Pogostemonis) to the interior-supporting medicines to raise Water and descend Fire, strengthening the Spleen and clearing Metal for recovery. If mistakenly using cold-cooling herbs, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) assisted by Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) is required for success. For external necrotic tissue, use Jiangzhu Gao (Cinnabar Pearl Ointment). Contraindicate knife, needle, and cauterizing drugs. If hard swelling does not resolve, external necrosis does not heal, deficiency heat persists, and the body becomes emaciated and scorched, it is a adverse sign and untreatable.
Fa Yi (Parotitis): Occurs below the zygomatic bone and above the mandible, one cun and three fen anterior to the ear. Caused by exogenous Heat in the Hand and Foot-Yangming meridians, or incomplete release of exterior syndrome in Shanghan. Initially use Guijin Wan, Canzhu Dan, or Weisheng San added with Shengma, Jiegeng, and Huanglian. If swelling and pain do not subside, use Tuoli Xiaodu San. If pain increases after pus discharge, with aversion to cold, fever, and afternoon tidal fever, it indicates Qi and Blood deficiency, suitable for Shiquan Dabu Tang to tonify. If cheek swelling extends to behind the ear, tonify Kidney deficiency fire. The classics state: Kidney heat causes initial redness of the cheek. If cheek swelling extends below the ear, clear and disperse Liver fire, as the area below the ear belongs to the Hand and Foot-Shaoyang meridians.
Shi Du (Seasonal Toxin): Initially resembles Shanghan. Within one to two days, redness, swelling, and pain of the face, nose, ears, and eyes occur, potentially extending to the throat and neck, caused by contracting abnormal Qi of the four seasons. There may be rooted nodules and throat obstruction. By the fifth to seventh day, if there is coma, throat closure, inability to eat or speak, it is untreatable. If it extends beyond ten days, it may heal spontaneously even without treatment.
Syndromes have Yin and Yang distinctions, treatments involve sweating and purging. Use cold-cooling herbs cautiously, combined with sneezing methods.
If the pulse is floating and rapid, the pathogen is in the exterior, suitable for Gegen Niubangzi Tang. If the pulse is deep and solid, the pathogen is in the interior, suitable for Neishu Huanglian Tang. If the pulse is deep and choppy, the pathogen has penetrated deeply, suitable for Loulu Tang. If originating from the Shaoyang meridian, swelling connects to below the ear, guide with Chaihu. If originating from the Yangming meridian, major swelling of head and face, guide with Shengma and Gegen. If originating from the Taiyang meridian, swelling connects above the ear, guide with Qianghuo, Jingjie, and Fangfeng. If both exterior and interior are excess, use Guijin Wan. However, this condition differs from accumulation of heat from rich diet; Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas) and Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) should not be used unless constipation is present. If the pulse is surging-rapid or floating-rapid, treat with Neixiao Weisheng San. If the pulse is slippery-rapid, suppuration is impending, treat with internal support, such as Tuoli Xiaodu San. For swelling, pain, and heat, use bian (pricking) to remove bad blood and apply detoxifying medicines. If contracted in winter, with a floating-tight pulse that feels surging-slow upon pressure, it is Cold-Qi郁 (stagnating) Heat, suitable to disperse with bitter and pungent herbs, such as Tuoli Wenjing Tang (Support Interior and Warm Meridian Decoction). Use needles and pricking cautiously; in winter, when storage prevails, use more medicine and fewer needles/stone tools.
Feng Mei Ju (Phoenix Eyebrow Carbuncle): Occurs on the eyebrow, also known as Mei Fa. Shape long like a melon, red and painful radiating to the brain, with both eyes swollen shut. If extremely hard, painful, and black, with vomiting, counterflow, and confusion, it is critical. Belongs to the Hand and Foot-Taiyang and Shaoyang meridians. Moxa Yanggu (SI07) for seven cones. Prickable after six days; if pus is obtained, symptoms decrease. Otherwise, females die in seven days, males in twenty-four days.
Long Quan Ju (Dragon Spring Carbuncle): Occurs in the philtrum, small and distinct shape, intermittent numbness and itching, with alternating chills and fever. Caused by latent Yang attacking Heart and Lung, and deficiency heat pouring into the Triple Burner. Treat like Ding methods, or moxa Baihui (GV20) for seven small cones.
Hu Zi Du (Tiger Whisker Toxin): Occurs at the corner of the chin, also known as Chengjiang Ju or Ke Yong. Caused by accumulated Heat in the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. For strong constitutions, use Guijin Wan to purge, and Liangge San added with Shengma, Gegen, Qianghuo, and Fangfeng to clear. Or moxa Baihui (GV20) for seven small cones.
