Ergou Chuang (Thrush) is caused by fetal heat attacking upward from the Heart and Spleen meridians, resulting in white patches like snowflakes covering the entire mouth; in severe cases, the throat becomes layered and swollen, making breastfeeding difficult and causing frequent crying. Wrap a piece of green gauze around the tip of a chopstick, dip it in freshly drawn cool water, and wipe away the white membrane until clean. It does not matter if slight bleeding occurs with firm pressure. Subsequently, apply Bingpeng San (Ice and Borax Powder) to the affected area and internally administer Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Decoction).
Dou Yong (Varicella Abscess) occurs when insufficient pus formation in primary smallpox allows toxic pathogens to flow into the Spleen and Lung meridians, causing diffuse swelling on the hands, feet, chest, and back, resembling plums or peaches. This often appears after the scabbing stage, when the body temperature is normal and there is no thirst, which is considered an auspicious sign. Internal resolution is unnecessary; instead, apply Taiyi Gao (Great Emperor Ointment) externally. Once the pus matures, puncture it with a needle. For patients with deficient Yuan Qi (Primal Qi), taking Baoyuan Tang (Preserve the Origin Decoction) to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach is essential.
This formula treats post-pus discharge conditions characterized by weak Spleen and Stomach function, thin pus, and failure of wound closure.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (0.3 qian), add one slice of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and two dates. Decoct in two bowls of water until reduced to 0.8 bowl. Take after meals.
Dou Ding (Varicella Carbuncle) is caused by incomplete eruption of smallpox toxins remaining in the Heart and Liver meridians. Initially presenting as purple spots, they turn black the next day. If the toxin is shallow, the lesion floats high and remains moist; if deep, it sinks deeply and becomes scorched. These lesions often appear around the seventh day, just before scabbing, particularly on the buttocks, legs, hands, and feet. Auspicious signs include mild body temperature, moist lesions, and clear voice. Inauspicious signs involve lesions on the abdomen, waist, or kidneys, accompanied by fever, withered complexion, and hoarseness. Upon seeing this condition, urgently prick the root of the carbuncle with a needle, insert a Chan Su Strip (Toad Venom Strip), and wait until the surrounding tissue cracks and the carbuncle moves. Then, cut it off with a knife and apply Yuhong Gao (Jade Red Ointment) to promote granulation and healing. If pricking yields no blood and the inserted medicine causes dryness without pus formation, the condition is incurable. Since this syndrome belongs to excess patterns, Jiajian Shuniangzi Tang (Modified Burdock Seed Decoction) should be used throughout the treatment course.
Add Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) for fever; add Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) and Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus) for phlegm; add Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) for hoarseness; add Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) for teeth grinding; add Feng Mi (Honey) and Xuan Ming Fen (Mirabilite) for constipation; add Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) for confusion; add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) for dry scabs; add Chan Tui (Cicadae Periostracum) and Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) for delayed scab shedding.
Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) treats post-Dou Ding conditions characterized by Qi and Blood deficiency, excessive pus discharge, and failure of granulation and wound closure.
