Shi Yan (Throat Affected by Corpse Worms) refers to the condition where corpse worms within the abdomen ascend and erode the throat, causing sores. This is primarily due to the disharmony of Yin and Yang, stagnation of Spleen and Lung Qi, and the retention of Wind-Heat Toxic Qi in the area treated for Shi Yan. When Wind-Heat Toxic Qi attacks upward into the throat, it causes itching and pain; it is appropriate to use Jin Lu Wan (Golden Dew Pill) administered by holding in the mouth for gradual dissolution.
Cinnabar (Qianzhu, 1 qian), Alum (Baifan, 1 fen, used raw), Licorice Root (Gancao, 0.5 liang, crushed and sifted into powder), Lead Frost (Qianshuang, 1 qian), Musk (Shexiang, 1 qian).
The above herbs are all ground together until uniform, mixed with refined honey, and formed into pills the size of a soap pod. After meals and before bedtime, wrap one pill in thin silk, hold it in the mouth, and allow it to dissolve slowly while swallowing the saliva.
For treating Shi Yan causing throat itching, pain, and difficulty in swallowing, use Zhusha Wan (Cinnabar Pill).
Cinnabar (Qianzhu, 1 liang, finely ground and purified by water flotation), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Chuan Shengma, 1 liang), Realgar (Xionghuang, 1 liang, finely ground), Apricot Seed (Xingren, 1 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double-kernel seeds selected, stir-fried with bran, then ground).
The above herbs are crushed and sifted into powder. Mix thoroughly with the previously ground ingredients. Combine with refined honey and pound three to two hundred times until uniform. Form into pills the size of a paulownia seed. Take at any time, washed down with millet gruel broth.
For treating Shi Yan causing throat itching, pain, and aphonia (loss of voice), this formula is suitable for oral administration.
Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, powdered, 1 qian), Wine (Ban zhan, half cup), Butter/Ghee (Su, 1 qian).
Mix the above ingredients together. Consume warm on an empty stomach.
Another formula:
Chinese Gall (Wubeizi, 0.5 liang), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai, 0.5 liang, sliced), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Chuan Shengma, 3 qian), Licorice Root (Gancao, 1 fen, honey-fried until slightly red and sliced), Belamcanda Rhizome (Shegan, 0.5 liang).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one small cup of water, decoct until reduced to one-fourth of the original volume. Strain out the dregs. Take warm at any time.
Another formula:
Belamcanda Rhizome (Shegan, 1 liang), Rosa Multiflora Root Bark (Qiangwei Genpi, 1 liang), Licorice Root (Gancao, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and sliced).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one medium cup of water, decoct until reduced to six-tenths of the original volume. Strain out the dregs. Take warm at any time.
For treating internal pain in the throat due to Shi Yan, approaching aphonia, this formula is suitable for oral administration.
Cinnamon Twig (Guixin, 3 liang), Apricot Seed (Xingren, 2 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double-kernel seeds selected, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow), Chaulmoogra Seed (Wuyiren, 1 liang).
The above herbs are crushed and sifted into powder. Wrap in silk cloth to form a packet the size of an apricot seed. Hold in the mouth, swallowing the saliva. Continue taking until the medicine is fully consumed.
For treating Shi Yan causing throat pain and itching, resembling symptoms of Gu Poison (parasitic disease):
Regularly holding fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) in the mouth will lead to recovery.
Another formula:
Wrap Ephedra Herb (Mahuang) in blue cloth, burn it, and use a bamboo tube to direct the smoke to fumigate the throat. This is effective.
