Huanggen (Radix Ephedrae), Muli Fen (Ostreae Cortex Pulvis), Baishanhui (Ash of Worn Fan), Gualou (Fructus Trichosanthis) (each 3 liang above), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 2 liang), Mixian (Rice Flour, 3 sheng).
Grind the above substances into fine powder, mix evenly with rice flour, place in a raw silk bag, and use the powder to dust the body. Apply three times daily. Avoid eating plums, peaches, and sparrow meat. Additionally, moxa-convulse the Dazhui (GV14) acupoint 500–600 cones. Moxa-convulse 14–35 cones daily, or as desired; the sweating will gradually cease.
Treats all types of deficiency sweating, night sweats, spontaneous sweating, and conditions such as Loufeng (Wind Leakage), where sweat flows uncontrollably and cannot be stopped by other medicines. This formula is suitable for all such cases.
Huanggen (Radix Ephedrae), Ben (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, likely typo for Gaoben or original text omission), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Muli (Ostreae Concha), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae) (each 0.5 liang above), Mixian (Rice Flour, 2 liang), Naozi (Borneolum Syntheticum, 0.5 qian).
Grind the medicine into a fine powder and mix uniformly. Wrap the powder in gauze and apply it to the sweating areas until the sweating stops.
Treats night sweats that persist for a long time.
Jiaomu (Semen Zanthoxyli), Huanggen (Radix Ephedrae) (equal parts).
Grind into fine powder. Take 1 qian each time, mixed with warm wine without sediment, taken after meals.
Treats axillary sweating in adults and children. In adults, this is due to abundant Heart blood and Qi, causing the face to often appear red; in children, it results from fright. The Zhensan (Pearl Powder) is suitable. Chancellor Shi suffered from persistent night sweats for a long time, with weak Qi and emaciated body, and treatment was ineffective. One day, when meeting Secretary Hong, a physician said: "Abundant Heart blood and Qi can also cause sweating; it is not a deficiency. It is appropriate to use medicine to收敛 (astringe/consolidate) the Heart channel." Thus, this formula was transmitted, and he recovered after taking it.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, from Silla), Chuandanggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, remove rhizome, dry-roast, each 0.5 liang).
Cut the medicine into small pieces. Use one pig heart, cut into three slices. Divide the medicine into three doses. For each dose, use one bowl of water and one slice of pig heart, decoct until one zhan remains, strain, and take. Take twice before meals. Another method adds Huangqi (Astragali Radix).
Generally, the human form is composed of skin, hair, blood vessels, sinews, muscles, and bone marrow, governed internally by the Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney. If emotions like joy and anger are unregulated, combined with overwork, internal essence and blood are depleted, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) become disordered, leading to alternating chills and fever. This causes the skin, blood, sinews, bones, and muscles to become flaccid and weak, unable to move, resulting in Wei syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome). The symptoms resemble Roufeng (Soft Wind) and Jiaoruo (Leg Weakness). Differentiate by pulse and signs and etiology; do not confuse it with discussions on Roufeng or Hongjiaojiao (Foot Qi/Gout). This belongs to external causes. Generally, Wei syndrome arises from insufficiency of internal organ Qi. Broadly, the cause of weakness is Lung heat and Spleen deficiency/thinness. When feet touch the ground, they become flaccid; the complexion is white and hair deteriorates, named Piwei (Skin Flaccidity), described as Lung heat scorching the leaves, stating that the five Zang organs develop Wei syndrome due to Lung heat. Heat below the Heart causes the knee joint to feel like it is breaking apart and cannot support the body; the calf sinews are relaxed and cannot bear weight. The complexion is red and collateral vessels are full, named Maiwei (Vessel Flaccidity). Caused by excessive sorrow, damaging internal Yang Qi, frequent hematuria, stating that large sinews become empty, developing into Jibi (Muscle Bi), transmitting to Maiwei. Liver heat causes bitter taste in the mouth, dry sinews, tight and contracted sinews, dark complexion, and withered nails, named Jinwei (Sinew Flaccidity). Caused by endless worry, unfulfilled desires, mental wandering, excessive sexual activity, relaxation of Zongjin (General Sinews), and occurrence of Baiyin (White Discharge), named Jinwei, originating from the Liver. Spleen heat causes dry stomach and thirst, insensitivity of muscles, yellow complexion, and muscle twitching, named Rouwei (Flesh Flaccidity), caused by gradual exposure to damp grounds, dwelling in low and marshy places, dampness soaking and obstructing sensation, named Rouwei. Kidney heat causes inability to lift the waist and spine, withered bones and reduced marrow, black complexion, and withered teeth, named Guwei (Bone Flaccidity). Caused by fatigue from long journeys, encountering hot weather and thirst, internal lack of Yang Qi, heat lodging in the Kidney, leading to Water failing to overcome Fire, resulting in withered bones and deficient marrow, thus named Guwei, originating from severe heat. The Nanjing states: Bone flaccidity preventing one from rising from bed is the case. Broadly, all Wei syndromes originate from Lung heat; this single phrase reveals the general principle of treatment. The Classic says: East is excess, West is deficiency, drain the South, tonify the North. This refers to generation and control relationships; the great principles of tonification and drainage are contained herein. East corresponds to Wood and the Liver; West corresponds to Metal and the Lung; South corresponds to Fire and the Heart; North corresponds to Water and the Kidney. Among the Five Elements, only Fire has two aspects. Although there are two Kidneys, Water resides in one. Yang is often in excess, Yin is often insufficient. Thus, the Classic says: One Water cannot overcome Two Fires, which is inevitable. Lung Metal is dry and resides superiorly, governing Qi and fearing Fire. Spleen Earth is damp and resides centrally, governing the four limbs and fearing Water. Fire nature is flaming upward; if desires are unregulated, Water loses nourishment, Fire lacks restraint and insults what it conquers, so the Lung receives Fire pathogen and becomes hot. Wood nature is rigid; rapid movement and heat reception cause Metal to lose nourishment, Fire lacks restraint and insults what it conquers, so the Spleen receives Wood pathogen and is injured. Lung heat cannot regulate the whole body; Spleen injury causes the four limbs to be unusable, and various Wei diseases arise. Draining the South clears Lung Metal, so East Wood is not excessive, how can Spleen be injured? Tonifying North Water descends Heart Fire so West Metal is not deficient, how can Lung be hot? Therefore, when the Yangming channel is full, Zongjin is moistened, able to bind bones and facilitate joints. The method for treating Wei syndrome does not go beyond this.
