Take the throat of a rooster and the white part of its feces, wrap them with Huangpi (Phellodendri Cortex), burn them into powder, and take them with clear wheat gruel. Alternatively, burn red chicken wings into powder, take one pinch with wine, three times a day.
Yizhi Ren (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit, 1 liang, stir-fried with salt water), Longgu (Fossilized Bones, 4 qian, ground separately), Muli (Oyster Shell, ground, half liang), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Preparata, peeled, half liang, stir-fried until yellow).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, use wine to make a paste for pills, sized like wutong seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, administered with decoction of Bibi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) on an empty stomach.
The disease of "Wu Dan" (Five Jaundices) is recorded extensively in various books; its symptoms are limited to five types: first, Huanghan (Yellow Sweat); second, Huangdan (Yellow Gallbladder/Jaundice); third, Gudan (Grain Jaundice); fourth, Jiudan (Alcohol Jaundice); fifth, Nulaodan (Sexual Exhaustion Jaundice). Huanghan presents with generalized edema, sweating without thirst, and sweat that stains clothes yellow like pagoda tree juice. This is caused by heat in the Spleen and Stomach leading to sweating, or by wind closing the pores causing heat accumulation, resulting in yellow sweat. Huangdan presents with immediate hunger after eating, generalized yellowing of the body, bluish or reddish discoloration during sleep, aversion to cold, and high fever. This results from excessive drinking and eating, causing internal heat, accumulation of food and fluids in the Spleen and Stomach, and struggle between Wind-Dampness and Heat. The steaming heat manifests in Yin areas causing vomiting, or in Yang areas causing chills followed by fever. Gudanzheng presents with dizziness after eating, mental restlessness, and generalized yellowing. This is due to heat in the Spleen and Stomach, caused by damaging Stomach Qi through overeating after extreme hunger. Jiudanzheng presents with yellowing of the skin and eyes, mental distress and pain, fullness in the calves, yellow urine, and red spots on the face. This is caused by drinking on an empty stomach, getting drunk and exposed to wind, or bathing in cold water. Nulaodan presents with yellowing of the skin and eyes, fever with aversion to cold, abdominal fullness and urgency, and difficult urination. This is caused by excessive labor and sexual exhaustion followed by exposure to water. Cases with severe thirst and abdominal distension are difficult to treat. Danyang stated: There is no need to distinguish these five grades; all are formed by Damp-Heat. This condition is like fermentation starter; when Dampness and Heat struggle, Qi cannot penetrate, leading to stagnation and yellowing. The distinction of the Five Jaundices is merely annotation by predecessors. As Zhang Changsha (Zhang Zhongjing) said, Yangming disease with no sweat, difficult urination, and mental distress leads to yellowing of the body. If the pulse is floating, slippery, tight, and rapid, it indicates Heat accumulating in the Yangming Stomach Meridian, diagnosed as Yangming Excess Yellowing. Zhu Gong said: When Cold-Dampness remains inside and does not dissipate, Heat accumulates in the Spleen and Stomach, pores do not open, and Stagnant Heat struggles with retained food, causing steaming and yellowing. Similarly, if Shanghan (Cold Damage) requires sweating but fails to sweat, or requires promoting urination but fails to do so, jaundice may also occur. The Spleen belongs to Earth and can cause yellowing when affected by Water-Dampness; if the pulse is deep, thin, and weak, and the body is cold and yellow, it indicates Cold and Heat struggling in the Taiyin Spleen Meridian, to be treated as a Yin Syndrome. There is also a syndrome of Blood Accumulation, where urination is normal, stool is black, and the patient goes mad; this is Yellowing caused by Blood Stasis accumulating in the Lower Jiao. People who love alcohol often develop yellowing because alcohol is very hot; Heat and Dampness struggle in the Stomach, causing external yellowing. Symptoms include no external heat, internal difficult urination, a sensation in the chest like eating garlic shoots, heat in the heart pit and soles, which may turn into Heidan (Black Jaundice) over time. If the pulse is floating and slippery with abdominal fullness and nausea, induce vomiting first. If the pulse is deep and slippery with abdominal fullness and constipation, purge first. There is also sudden yellowing with chest fullness and wheezing, life-threatening, called Cuhuang (Sudden Jaundice), characterized only by heart tremors and fever. Generally, Jaundice with thirst is difficult to treat; without thirst, it is easy. Jaundice toxin entering the abdomen with wheezing and fullness is critical; pulse surging and large, with free stool and thirst, indicates death; pulse minute and small, with free urination and no thirst, indicates survival; no pulse at Cun Kou and cold breath from the nose are also untreatable. Cases with bland taste, palpitations, tinnitus, weak legs, slight chills and fever, and turbid red-white urine should be treated as Deficiency Syndromes. Do not recklessly use cooling medicines, as they will further damage Blood and Qi. The treatment method of separating and draining Damp-Heat is most appropriate. In clinical practice, the key lies in differentiating pulse and symptoms. Human life depends on the physician; how can one not be cautious?
