Ancient formulas specifically for wind-stroke in women are collected here. They mostly use Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex); if it is not truly an invasion of external pathogenic factors, they should not be used lightly. It is better to regulate according to the method of Xue Ji. For other syndrome treatments and prescriptions, see the miscellaneous diseases section; there is no difference in initial treatment between men and women.
[Opisthotonos]
[Danjixi] Women suffering from opisthotonos are due to body deficiency receiving wind pathogens, which enter the Yang meridians. The Yin and Yang meridians circulate around the body. When wind enters the Yang meridians due to deficiency, the waist and back reverse and spasm, resembling a horn bow. Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation Decoction) is suitable.
[Xue Ji] Master Zhang Zhongjing said: Excessive sweating in Taiyang disease often leads to spasms; purging wind disease leads to spasms. *San Yin Fang* states: Internal deficiency of Qi and Blood, invaded by Wind-Cold-Damp-Heat, leads to spasms. Since Wind disperses Qi, sweating without aversion to cold is called Soft Spasm; Cold congeals Blood, so no sweating with aversion to cold is called Hard Spasm. This is not solely due to Wind-Damp, but arises from internal deficiency, excessive sweating causing blood loss, and tendons losing nourishment; it is a deficiency pattern. I believe that excessive sweating and purging in Shanghan, as well as conditions like postpartum ulcers, or damage to Qi and Blood by harsh medications, can transform into this. If Metal is weak and Wood is hyperactive, first use Xie Qing Wan (Drain Green Pill) [Pediatrics Liver Disease], then use Yi Gong San (Yi Palace Powder) [Pediatrics Vomiting/Diarrhea]; if Kidney Water is deficient, use Liu Wei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill) [Miscellaneous Deficiency Consumption]; if Liver Fire is hyperactive, first use Jia Wei Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction) [Heat Entering Blood Chamber], then use Jia Wei Si Wu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction); for fever, use Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder); if Wood insults Spleen Earth, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) [Miscellaneous Fatigue Injury] plus Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus); for Spleen Meridian depression, use Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) [Miscellaneous Forgetfulness]; for Spleen Earth Damp-Heat, use Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) [Shanghan Stomach Excess]. Generally, after illness when Qi and Blood are weak, decoct Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) thickly, assist with Jiangzhi (Fresh Ginger Juice) and Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), use frequently. If ineffective, use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) [Miscellaneous Deficiency Consumption]; if still ineffective, add Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) or use Shenfu Tang (Ginseng and Aconite Decoction); if slow, rescue is impossible. (Renshen one tael, Fuzi two qian, decoct in water and take.)

For others, refer to the Spasm section of Miscellaneous Diseases.
[Locked Jaw]
Women with wind-stroke and locked jaw are due to body deficiency receiving wind, which enters the tendons connecting the jaw and cheeks around the mouth. The tendons of the Three Yang Hand Meridians knot into the jaw and cheeks; the tendon of the Foot Yangming Meridian goes up along the mouth. Wind carrying cold enters these tendons due to deficiency, causing tendon contraction, thus pulling the jaw tight and locking the mouth.
[Xue Ji] If the previous symptoms are due to Wind Pathogens lodging in the Hand and Foot Yangming Meridians, causing facial deviation, use Qin Jiao Sheng Ma Tang (Gentian and Cimicifuga Decoction) [Miscellaneous Wind Stroke]. If Wind-Heat damages Qi, use Sheng Feng Tang (Wind-Prohibiting Decoction) [Miscellaneous Wind Stroke]. These should be used together with the following formula. One woman, due to anger, had dripping menstruation lasting half a month before stopping; upon anger, menstruation would return immediately. Severe cases involved locked jaw, tendon spasm, epistaxis, headache, phlegm-spasm, convulsions, and upward staring of pupils. This was extreme Liver Fire. Treat with Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) [Shanghan Shaoyang] plus Re Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis). It did not recur afterwards. Another woman, constitutionally Yin deficient, suffered generalized itching. Mistakenly taking wind-dispelling drugs led to locked jaw and convulsions; Liver pulse was surging and rapid. I said: Liver Blood is Yin/Water, Liver Qi is Yang/Fire. This is Liver Meridian Blood deficiency with Fire excess. Assist Yin/Blood and suppress Liver Fire using Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Heat and convulsions stopped suddenly. Then regulate with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), and Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) to recover.

Add four sheng of wine, decoct until two sheng remain. Strain and divide into four doses. Pry open the mouth and administer.
Treating wind-stroke in women with locked jaw, retracted tongue base, and difficulty speaking.
Jiezi (Brassicae Semenis Mustardae, one sheng) finely ground. Add three sheng of vinegar, decoct until one sheng remains. Apply to cheeks and under the jaw. Effective.
[Aphasia]
Chao Yuanfang discussed: The Spleen meridian connects to the stomach, runs alongside the throat, connects to the tongue base, and spreads under the tongue. The divergent channel of the Heart ties to the tongue base. Now, the Heart and Spleen organs receive Wind Pathogens, causing tongue stiffness and inability to speak. The throat is where Qi ascends and descends; the epiglottis is the door of sound; the tongue is the mechanism of sound; the lips are the fan of sound. Wind-Cold lodging between the epiglottis causes sudden loss of voice. All are caused by Wind Pathogen injury, hence called Wind-Stroke Aphasia. Classics say: Sleeping drunk facing the wind causes aphasia and inability to speak.
[Xue Ji] If the previous symptoms are due to Phlegm confusing the Heart Orifice, clear Heart Fire. If due to Damp-Phlegm tongue stiffness, clear Spleen Heat. If due to Wind-Heat locked jaw, clear Liver Fire. If due to Wind-Phlegm blocking the throat, guide out Phlegm-Fluid. If due to Deficiency Fire flaming upward, strengthen the Master of Water. If due to Qi deficiency and collapse, augment the Source of Fire. If due to Kidney deficiency with dark tongue and aphasia, tonify Kidney Qi.
One woman fell due to anger, with surging Phlegm and aphasia. Administered Niuhuang Qingxin Wan (Calculus Bovis Clearing Heart Pill) to regain slight consciousness. Used Shenxian Jieyu Dan (Immortal Unblocking Words Decoction) plus Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) to gradually improve. Then used Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) to recover. Another woman had sudden aphasia for half a year, unresponsive to various medicines. Both Chi pulses were floating and rapid. First used Liuwang Wan material plus Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) for several doses, slightly improved. Then used Dihuang Yinzi (Rehmannia Infusion) for over twenty doses to recover. Men often have this condition, also treated with this medicine. (All formulas see Miscellaneous Wind Stroke.)

[Wind-Bi Limb Paralysis]
Women's Wind-Bi is caused by the combination of Wind, Cold, and Damp pathogens forming Bi. Predominance of Wind makes it Wind-Bi, characterized by pain throughout the skin and muscles. All Yang meridians originate from the hands and feet and circulate through the body. Wind-Cold lodges in the skin and muscles, initially forming Bi. Further injuring Yang meridians, it stagnates in deficient areas, fighting with Qi and Blood. As Qi and Blood flow slowly, Wind-Bi results in limb paralysis.
[Xue Ji] Classics say: Where pathogens gather, Qi must be deficient. If the previous symptoms are due to rampant Wind Pathogens, or anger stirring Liver Fire, dry Blood and contracting tendons, use Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). If Spleen and Lung Qi are deficient, insensitivity of skin and muscles, numbness of hands and feet, use Sanbi Tang (Three Bi Decoction). If Kidney Water is depleted, failing to nourish sinews and bones, or Liver/Spleen Blood deficiency causing flaccid Bi, use Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill). If sinew contraction occurs after taking drying medicines, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) and Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). If both Qi and Blood are deficient, use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction). He's *Yilin Jiyao* and other formulas, newly published *Danxi Xinfa Appendix* says: If a person has numbness and insensitivity in the thumb, or weakness in hands/feet, or slight muscle twitching, severe Wind disease will occur within three years. Preventively take Bafeng Tang (Eight Winds Decoction), Tianma Wan (Gastrodia Pill), and Fangtong Sheng San (Saposhnikovia and Magnolia Powder). Little do they know Hejian said: Wind is the end of disease. Therefore, stroke with paralysis is not due to internal Liver Wood Wind, nor external Six Evils Wind invading. It is truly due to extreme Five Emotions, blazing Heart Fire, depleted Kidney Water unable to control it, leading to Yin deficiency and Yang excess, stagnant heat, confused spirit, useless sinews and bones, and sudden collapse without consciousness. Treatment should focus on consolidating Yuan Qi. If one hastily takes Bafeng etc., it damages Yuan Qi, inviting Wind and Stroke. One woman, due to anger, vomited Phlegm with chest fullness. Took Erchen Tang (Two Aged Decoction), Shunqi (Regulating Qi), Huatan (Resolving Phlegm) agents, resulting in hemiplegia, internal heat, dry mouth, extreme fatigue. I examined her and found blazing Liver Fire insulting Spleen Earth. Used Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). Fortunately she was cautious about illness, recovered in over a year. A widow had chest/hypochondriac distension/pain, internal heat and afternoon fever, irregular menstruation, sore/numb limbs, frequent Phlegm vomiting. Using Qingqi Huatan (Clear Qi Resolve Phlegm) meds caused throat discomfort, leukorrhea, abdominal distension. Using Qingre Liqi (Clear Heat Regulate Qi) meds caused chest oppression, intermittent limb numbness. I said: This is originally Depression/Anger injuring Liver/Spleen, previous meds damaged severely. Morning use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) to resolve depression, generate Spleen Qi. Evening use Jia Wei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to generate Liver Blood, clear Liver Fire. Over a hundred doses to recover. Later, anger caused limb numbness again. Used Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang plus Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) to cure. Later anger caused relapse, menstruation like pouring, pulse floating/surging/rapid. This is Liver Fire injuring Spleen failing to control blood. Used Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Paojiang (Roasted Ginger). One dose stopped bleeding. Used Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang plus Paojiang (Roasted Ginger), Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma). Four doses woke the Stomach. More use of Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction), Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to regulate and recover. Another woman had dizziness and Phlegm vomiting. Using Huatan Liqi (Resolve Phlegm Regulate Qi) meds, limbs sometimes numb. Taking Qufeng Huatan (Dispel Wind Resolve Phlegm) meds, limbs constantly numb, hands/feet alternately cold/hot. This is Spleen Earth deficiency failing to generate Lung Metal. Used Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang plus Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Paojiang (Roasted Ginger). Over twenty doses, Spleen Qi gradually recovered, symptoms slightly improved. More use of Jia Wei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) over thirty doses to recover. Later anger caused Phlegm vomiting. Self-administered Qingqi Huatan Wan (Clear Qi Resolve Phlegm Pill). No appetite, much Phlegm vomiting, chest/hypochondriac distension. I used Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) doubling Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), adding little Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix). Several doses to health.
Sanbi Tang (Three Bi Decoction): Treats Qi and Blood stagnation, limb spasm, Wind-Bi, Qi-Bi and other diseases.
