[Da] Abdominal and epigastric pain in women caused by blood and qi [Qi (Vital Energy)] results from the deficiency of the Zang-Fu organs [Zang-Fu Organs], allowing wind pathogen [Wind Pathogen] to invade and strike against the true qi [True Qi], causing pain. The pain moves up and down with the flow of qi, sometimes rushing upward to the heart region, or attacking downward into the abdomen; hence it is called "blood and qi attacking the heart and abdomen."
[Xue] If the aforementioned condition is due to qi stagnation and blood stasis [Blood Stasis], use Moyao San (Myrrh Powder). If it is due to exhaustion damaging the primordial qi [Primordial Qi], use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) (from miscellaneous diseases of injury and fatigue). If it is due to liver-spleen depression and knotting [Liver-Spleen Depression], use Siqi Tang (Four-Seven Decoction) (from miscellaneous diseases of qi). If it is due to anger stirring up liver fire [Liver Fire], use Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) (for heat entering the blood chamber [Blood Chamber]). If it is due to liver-spleen blood deficiency [Blood Deficiency], use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) (general prescription). If it is due to spleen-lung qi deficiency [Qi Deficiency], use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) (from miscellaneous disease of consumptive disease). If it is due to middle-jiao qi deficiency [Middle Jiao Qi Deficiency], use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). If it is due to both qi and blood deficiency [Qi and Blood Deficiency], use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) (which is the Bajiaowu Tang for consumptive disease). A certain woman suffered abdominal and epigastric pain every time she became angry, which persisted for a long time without healing; this was liver fire damaging spleen qi. Using one liang of stir-fried Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), along with five slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), decocted and taken orally stopped the pain. Subsequently, using Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) added with Zhizi and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) prevented recurrence. Another woman suffered intermittent abdominal and epigastric pain due to emotional depression, responding to no medicines. She was cured using Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) (from miscellaneous disease of forgetfulness) with doubled amounts of stir-fried Zhizi.
The mother of Lu Xiaocun from Chenhu suffered from chronic abdominal and epigastric pain. Every episode was accompanied by chest fullness and vomiting, cold hands and feet, flushed face, numb lips, dry throat, and dry tongue. She experienced alternating chills and fever, unable to sleep through the night for over a month. Her pulse was surging [Surging Pulse]. Treated as phlegm-fire [Phlegm-Fire] by many, it would subside temporarily but recur repeatedly. In the spring of the Yisi year, attacks became frequent and severe. Continuing with previous medications aggravated the condition. This was due to cold-cooling herbs damaging the true yang [True Yang], presenting as internal true cold with external false heat. Furthermore, the pulse was surging, wiry [Wiry Pulse], and abnormal, indicating spleen qi deficiency with liver wood [Liver Wood] overacting upon it. Treatment should warm and tonify stomach qi. Thus, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) was used with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix). After one dose, she slept soundly until dawn; the surging pulse immediately subsided, the abnormal pulse disappeared, and all symptoms resolved.
