[Phlegm-Rebellion with Anorexia]
Ezu (Morning Sickness) refers to vomiting, nausea, dizziness, aversion to food, and selective eating during pregnancy.
[From *Qianjin Fang*] Whenever a woman is physically weak and emaciated, deficient in Qi and Blood, and has weak Kidney Qi, or when she has been exposed to wind and consumed too much cold food or drink, leading to phlegm-fluid retention in the epigastrium, she is prone to Ezu when conceiving. The phrase "prone to conceiving" means that the woman's menstruation still comes regularly, her complexion and skin appear normal, but she suffers from heaviness and mental restlessness, lacks appetite, and does not know where the discomfort lies. At this time, if the pulse is smooth and harmonious, it indicates impending conception. After two months, if menstruation ceases, it confirms pregnancy. Patients suffering from Ezu experience mental restlessness, heavy head and dizzy eyes, heavy limbs, lethargy and unwillingness to work, aversion to the smell of food, craving for salty and sour fruits, preferring to lie down rather than get up. This is commonly called "aversion to food." If the condition persists into the third or fourth month, severe vomiting occurs, which the patient cannot control. This is caused by the closure of menstrual blood, allowing water-dampness to soak the Zang organs, preventing their Qi from circulating freely. Thus, there is mental restlessness, chest fullness, rebellious Qi, and vomiting. When blood vessels are blocked and meridians are obstructed, limbs become heavy; if accompanied by Wind, the head and eyes become dizzy. Upon noticing these signs, one should immediately administer Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction) for several doses, followed by Fuling Wan (Poria Pill) to eliminate phlegm-fluids, after which appetite will return. Once nourished by food, physical strength increases, Qi and Blood become robust enough to nourish the fetus, and the mother becomes healthy.
[From *Daquan Yifang*] Women with weak constitution during pregnancy are prone to Ezu. Their appearance remains unchanged, pulses are smooth and harmonious, but they feel heavy limbs, dizzy head and eyes, selective eating, aversion to food smells, and preference for salty and sour tastes. In severe cases, there may be alternating chills and fever, mental restlessness, vomiting of phlegm-fluids, and mental confusion making them unable to endure. Chao Yuanfang calls this Ezu, noting only differences in severity. Mild cases do not require medication; severe cases must be treated. *Qianjin Fang* uses Banxia Fuling Tang and Fuling Wan specifically for Ezu. However, these two prescriptions are rarely used nowadays because Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome) has properties that may disturb the fetus. Since the fetus is newly formed, there is concern about miscarriage, so caution is necessary. Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun* mentions using Huanglong Tang, which is essentially Xiaochaihu Tang without Banxia. This seems designed specifically for pregnancy. Wang Ziheng proposed Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder), *Ju Fang* offers Ren Shen Ding Xiang San (Ginseng and Clove Powder), Yang Zhen offers Ren Shen Ju Pi Tang (Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction), and Qi Shiming offers Xingpi Yin (Spleen-Awakening Decoction). None of these use Banxia, and they are generally effective. Li Maoweng stated: "If the left pulse is weak and vomiting persists despite various medications, one should take medicines that regulate Blood and restore origin, as the classic says: 'Absence of Yin leads to vomiting.'"
[Xue Ji] For the above symptoms, if there is phlegm retention in the Middle Jiao (Epigastrium), use Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with Zhike (Aurantium Fruit). If there is food stagnation, use Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Zhike. If Spleen and Stomach are weak, use Yigong San (Extraordinary Aid Powder). If Stomach Qi is insufficient, use Ren Shen Ju Pi Tang; add Zhike if accompanied by emotional distress, Su Geng (Perilla Stem) for chest/hypochondriac fullness, and Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) for hypochondriac pain. If appetite is low, use Liujunzi Tang with Zi Su (Perilla Leaf) and Zhike. For dizziness and fatigue, use Liujunzi Tang. For Spleen-Stomach weakness with vomiting and anorexia, use Banxia Fuling Tang. Banxia is the primary herb for strengthening Spleen Qi and transforming phlegm-stagnation. For Spleen-Stomach weakness with vomiting, phlegm-fluid obstruction, poor appetite, and unstable fetus, Banxia Fuling Tang with increased Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) is essential. Banxia, Baizhu, Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), and Sharen (Amomum Fruit) effectively calm the fetus and strengthen the Spleen-Stomach; I have verified their efficacy. For phlegm-rebellion anorexia due to food stagnation, use Banxia Fuling Tang with Zhike, adding Chaihu if emotional. For phlegm obstruction, use Banxia Fuling Tang with Baizhu. For external Wind-Cold, use Rensu Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction). For food-related abdominal distension, use Xiangsha Liujunzi Tang (Fragrant Amomum Six-Gentlemen Decoction); for chills/fever with vomiting, use Rensyang Wei Tang (Ginseng-Nourishing-Stomach Decoction).
Case 1: A pregnant woman vomited, disliked food, felt fatigued and sleepy due to deficient Stomach Qi causing Ezu. Treated with Ren Shen Ju Pi Tang for two doses with gradual improvement; then Liujunzi Tang plus Zi Su for two doses resulted in stability.
Case 2: A pregnant woman had acid regurgitation and nausea, wanting to vomit frequently due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency and food stagnation. Treated with Liujunzi Tang plus Zhike and Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), resulting in cure.
Case 3: A pregnant woman had food retention, abdominal fullness, vomiting, acid regurgitation, diarrhea, and anorexia. Diagnosed as food stagnation with Liver Wood attacking Spleen Earth. Treated with Liujunzi Tang to strengthen Spleen, Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome) and Houpo (Magnolia Bark) to digest food, and Coptis prepared with Evodia to clear Liver Fire. All symptoms resolved. Regulated with Liujunzi Tang plus Sharen to stabilize Spleen Earth.
Case 4: A pregnant woman vomited with hypochondriac distension, alternating chills/fever, and green-yellow complexion due to hyperactive Liver Wood attacking Spleen Earth. Treated with Liujunzi Tang plus Chaihu, Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), and Zhike, resulting in stability.
Case 5: A pregnant woman vomited acid water, had chest fullness and anorexia due to deficient Spleen Earth being bullied by Liver Wood. Treated with Liujunzi Tang plus Shaoyao (Peony Root), resulting in cure.
Case 6: A pregnant woman had chest/abdominal distension, vomiting phlegm, and anorexia due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency turning food into phlegm. Treated with Banxia Fuling Tang until improved, then Liujunzi Tang plus Zhike, Su Geng, and Jiegeng restored normal diet. Later, anger caused hypochondriac distension, anorexia, phlegm vomiting, and nausea. Treated with Banxia Fuling Tang plus Chaihu and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), resulting in cure.
Wang Shishan treated a thin woman with purplish complexion who, over a year postpartum, had amenorrhea. In early summer, she suddenly developed vomiting, finger numbness, inability to extend fists, hoarse voice, and silent hiccups. Physicians considered it critical Wind disease. Wang diagnosed fine, slightly slippery pulses, identifying it as Pregnancy Ezu. Others questioned how pregnancy could occur with amenorrhea. Wang replied: "There are constants and variations in nature; this is a variation." Although pulses were fine and nearly slippery, the Chi (Cun) pulse at the wrist was unceasing upon pressure, confirming pregnancy. He treated with Sijunzi Tang (Four-Gentlemen Decoction) plus Erchen Tang. Symptoms decreased, though she feared porridge, preferring dry, fragrant, dry foods, showing signs of life.
Madam You Rangxi, wife of a Censor, recovered from illness a month prior, missed her period, suffered from hiccups, dizziness, and difficulty eating. Physicians attributed it to Two-Yang diseases affecting Heart and Spleen, deeming amenorrhea incurable. Jiang Yingsu diagnosed small but slippery and unceasing Chi pulses, identifying it as Pregnancy Ezu, not a ominous sign. Treated with Liujunzi Tang plus Sharen; stabilized after several doses, later delivering a daughter.
[From *Jin Gui Yao Lue*] If a woman has a normal pulse, with slight weakness in the Yin position, thirst, inability to eat, no chills/fever, it is named Pregnancy. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated. According to method, this symptom appears around the 60th day. If improper treatment causes vomiting/diarrhea after a month, stop treatment. Lou Quanshan explained: "Stop treatment" means cease medical intervention and wait for self-healing. I once treated women with Ezu vomiting who worsened with medicine. Reflecting on Zhongjing's principle, I stopped medication for over a month, and they healed naturally. Truly profound words of sages!
*Wan Quan Fang* states: For pregnant women with food aversion, allowing them to eat whatever they crave will cure them.
Zhongjing stated: For persistent vomiting in pregnancy, Ganjiang Renshen Banxia Wan (Dried Ginger, Ginseng, and Pinellia Pill) is indicated.
**Ganjiang Renshen Banxia Wan**
Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Renshen (Ginseng Root) (each 1 liang); Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome, washed in hot water to remove slipperiness) (2 liang).
Grind the three ingredients into powder, mix with fresh ginger juice to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 10 pills with warm water, three times daily.
**Banxia Fuling Tang**
Indicated for Pregnancy Ezu, vomiting with mental restlessness, dizziness, aversion to food smells, craving for sour/salty, preferring to lie down, joint pain, emaciation with phlegm, and unstable pregnancy.
Banxia (washed) (1.25 qian); Chifuling (Red Poria), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) (each 0.75 qian); Juhong (Tangerine Red Peel), Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower - note: *Qianjin Fang* omits Xuanfuhua, adds Xixin (Asarum Root) and Zisu (Perilla Leaf)); Renshen, Shaoyao (Peony Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 0.5 liang).
Chop ingredients. Take 5 qian per dose, with 7 slices of ginger, decoct in water, take on an empty stomach. Also take Fuling Wan.
Modifications: If external heat, thirst, mouth ulcers, remove Juhong and Xixin, add Qianhu (Peucedanum Root) and Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) (0.75 qian each). If cold abdomen with diarrhea, remove Dihuang, add fried Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) (0.5 liang). If deficient heat in Stomach, constipation, red/scanty urine, add Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) (0.75 qian), remove Dihuang, add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (0.25 qian).
**Fuling Wan**
Indicated for Pregnancy Ezu, mental restlessness, vomiting phlegm, dizziness. Take Banxia Fuling Tang for two doses first, then this pill.

Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung seeds. Take 50 pills with rice water, three times daily. One formula adds Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber). *Zhouhou Fang* adds Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry).
**For Pregnancy Chest/Epigastric Fullness, Phlegm-Rebellion, Anorexia**
Chifuling, Qianhu, Baizhu, Zisuye (Perilla Leaf) (each 1 liang); Banxia, Maimendong, Renshen, Dafupi (Areca Peel) (each 0.5 liang).
Grind into coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, with 1 cup water, 5 slices ginger, decoct to 0.7 cup, strain, take warm. One formula omits Dafupi and Renshen, adds Dafuzi (Areca Nut).
**For Pregnancy Diaphragm Qi Stagnation, Vomiting, Thirst, Mental Restlessness, Limb Weakness**
Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), Banxia, Maimendong, Renshen, Gancao (0.5 liang); Hemei (Chebula Fruit), Huoxiang (Patchouli Leaf) (each 1 liang); Chifuling, Zhike, Chenpi (each 0.75 qian).
Chop. Take 3 qian per dose, with 1 cup water, 3 slices ginger, 1 jujube, decoct to 0.7 cup, strain, take warm. One formula omits Hemei and jujube.

One dose. Boil in 2 zhong water to 1 zhong. Take before meals.
All the above formulas use Banxia, likely for its acridity to disperse knot-Qi and direct rebellious Qi downward, stopping vomiting. It is not solely for phlegm. Lou Quanshan noted: *Daquan* avoids Banxia fearing fetal disturbance, while Zhongjing uses it. I have used Banxia repeatedly for Pregnancy Ezu without disturbing the fetus. As the Classic says: "When there is pathology, there is no injury" (the pathogen bears the brunt, sparing the fetus).
**Baizhu San**
Indicated for Ezu vomiting clear fluid, severe cases unable to take fluids for over ten days.
Baizhu (1 liang), Renshen (0.5 liang), Dingxiang (Cloves) (0.25 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root) (0.1 qian).

Grind to powder. Take 2 large qian per dose, with 1 large cup water, 2 jujubes, 3 slices ginger, decoct to 0.8 cup, strain, sip warm.
Mild cases heal after 1-2 doses. Old formula included 2 liang Juhong for chills/fever/malaria/dysentery anorexia; later removed Juhong, replacing with Ganjiang. Ganjiang is excellent for elderly Qi deficiency, constipation, and dry mouth/thirst. Obstetrician Qi Shiming retained Ganjiang, removing Juhong, also named Xingpi Yinzi, highly effective for Ezu.
The above formulas combined with Fuling Wan, Dingxiang and Ganjiang are suitable only for Cold-Interior with slow pulse.
**Ren Shen Ju Pi Tang**
Indicated for Ezu vomiting phlegm-fluids.

Cut finely. Boil in 1 sheng water to 0.5 sheng, strain, divide into two doses, take before meals.
Formulas using Maimendong, Zhuru, and Lugen are cool in nature and neutral in effect, serving as balanced remedies for heat patterns without cold.
**For Pregnancy Food Aversion [Gujin Lu Yan Fang]**
Renshen (4 liang), Nongpo, Shengjiang, Zhike, Gancao (each 2 liang).
Boil in 6 sheng water to 3 sheng, divide into three doses.

Chop. Take 3 qian per dose, with 4 slices ginger, decoct in water, take warm anytime. Variations: One omits Banxia/Diyü, adds Renshen/Sangjisheng (Mulberry Mistletoe Stem); another omits Huangqi/Baizhu/Banxia/Diyü, adds Aiye (Mugwort Leaf); this is simply Jiao'ai Tang plus Baifuling.
**Xiao Dihuang Wan**
Indicated for Pregnancy Nausea, vomiting clear fluid, abdominal pain/anorexia.
Renshen (remove radix tip), Ganjiang (stir-fried/pao, equal parts).
Grind to fine powder, mix with fresh Dihuangjuice (Rehmannia Juice) to form pills size of tung seeds. Take 50 pills before meals with rice water.
The above formulas all regulate Blood. Li Maoweng's statement about weak left pulse/vomiting unresponsive to meds healing with "Blood-Regulating Origin-Restoring" drugs refers to such categories.
**Baosheng Tang**
Indicated for women with absent menstruation, seemingly ill but healthy, slippery/large/equal six pulses (pregnancy pulse). One dose. Boil in 2 zhong water with 3 slices ginger to 1 zhong. Take anytime.
**Erxiang San**
Indicated for Pregnancy Unstable Fetus, Qi non-ascent/descent, poor appetite, vomiting acid water, heaviness upon rising/sitting.
Xiangfuzi (1 liang), Huoxiangye, Gancao (each 3 qian).
Grind to powder. Take 2 qian anytime, mixed with boiling water.
*[Supplement]* I once treated a pregnant woman with Ezu, vomiting/anorexia, dizziness unable to walk. Decocted bitter pomelo peel thickly, drank several cups, cured. For severe vomiting, add ginger juice.
Another Formula: Sha ren (Amomum) powder, 2 qian per dose, mixed with ginger water or rice water.
The above formulas all regulate Qi. For Qi Deficiency, the first two are suitable; for Qi Stagnation, the third is suitable.
[Lou Quanshan] A woman, 3 months pregnant, vomited phlegm-fluids and food, occurring daily at Yin/Mao hours (5-9 AM). During attacks, she felt Qi rushing up from lower abdomen, then chest fullness and vomiting, red face, slight agitation, dizziness unable to rise, limb pain, slight thirst. This is Liver Fire carrying Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) Fire upward. Severity alternated daily. Pulses harmonous except Right Cun was flooding. Hundred herbs failed. Approaching 2 months. My son was ill; I accidentally used Chenxiang (Agarwood) ground in water to dissolve Baolong Wan (Bear Dragon Pill) for him. His chest widened, Qi stopped rushing up. After 2-3 doses, vomiting stopped, dizziness reduced, appetite returned, stabilized.
Another case: Mrs. Ying had heartburn/vomiting, congested pulses, epigastric fullness/blockage, Qi attacking back, both elbows painful, requiring constant hot rubbing. Vomiting provided slight relief. Pulses flooding. Prescribed:

After 2 doses, heartburn/vomiting stopped, epigastric blockage receded. Nighttime back/elbow pain remained, treated with rubbing, then dissolved Baolong Wan. Disease vanished.
[Danbo Yuanjian] A woman near 30, 2 months pregnant, suffered vomiting/dizziness, feeling unbearable. Took Renshen, Baizhu, Chuanxiong, Chenpi, Fuling etc. for 5-7 days, felt heavier. Called me to pulse. Both hands wiry, Left worse, and weak. I said:
