Zishiying Wan (Purple Quartz Pill) [from *Benshi Fang*] treats women's diseases characterized by fluctuating menstrual volume (suddenly more or less), early or late onset, and frequent pain. Physicians generally call this a menstrual disease without distinguishing whether Yin overcomes Yang or Yang overcomes Yin, hence medications are often ineffective. When Yin Qi overcomes Yang Qi, the uterus becomes cold, and blood circulation is obstructed, as stated in the classics: "When heaven is cold and earth frozen, water condenses into ice," causing sudden reduction in flow occurring after the expected date. If Yang Qi overcomes Yin Qi, blood flows and spills excessively, as stated: "When heaven is hot and earth warm, menstrual water boils over," causing sudden increase in flow occurring before the expected date. One should harmonize Yin and Yang, regulate Qi and Blood, prevent mutual overcoming, and aim for balance. This pill is suitable.

Shengyang Jujing Tang (Ascending Yang and Elevating Menstruation Decoction) [Li Dongyuan] treats irregular menstruation. The right chi pulse is empty upon pressure, indicating depletion of both Qi and Blood, a severe cold syndrome. Light pressure reveals a rapid pulse; deep pressure reveals a wiry, tight, or choppy pulse, all signs of Yang depletion. Yin fire is also extinguished, presenting with heat symptoms in the mouth, nose, eyes, or thirst, indicating Yin restlessness and departing Yang. Treatment should involve warming, descending, guiding, and drying. This method greatly ascends and floats Qi and Blood, tonifying the depletion below the Mingmen (Gate of Life). For root herbs, use the part near the shoot, removing the shoot itself.

[Acupuncture]
[Xin] Irregular Menstruation: Yindu point (needle 3 cun, this point is highly effective, depth determined by menstrual phase. Located between the fourth toe, moxa 3 cones.)
[Dong] Another method: Moxa on the blue vein at the white flesh margin below the medial malleolus, number of cones according to age.
[Ji] Another method: Zhongji, Sanyinjiao, Shenshu, Qihai.
[Xin] For long-term amenorrhea suddenly turning into severe metrorrhagia, then stopping again, followed by heavy irregular flow: Fenglong (needle 6 fen, stop bleeding.) Shimen (needle 5 fen, stop menstruation.)
For women aged fifty whose menstruation stops and then resumes, with varying amounts, blood clots or red blood mixed, and abdominal distension like pregnancy: Tianshu, Zhongwan, Qihai (each needle 5 fen, immediate cure.)
[Jia] For women with metrorrhagia, suffering from blood closure and obstruction, rebellious qi and distension: Xuehai governs. For uterine pain and irregular menstruation: Tianshu governs. (*Qianjin Fang* describes it as abdominal distension, borborygmus, qi rushing to the chest.) For lower abdominal fullness and pain radiating to the yin, lumbar and spinal pain when menstruation arrives, uterine masses, and cold in the zi men radiating to the patella and thigh: Shuidao governs. (*Qianjin Fang* describes radiating to patella and thigh as difficulty in urination and defecation.)
[Body Pain]
[Chanbao] Menstrual blood circulates Qi and Blood, harmonizes Yin and Yang to nourish the body. When Qi and Blood are abundant and Yin and Yang are harmonious, the body is smooth. If external Wei-Qi nourishment is lacking, or internal Ying-Blood irrigation is deficient, Qi and Blood are insufficient, and before menstruation begins, the body first feels pain.
Yuetong San (Exceeding Pain Powder) treats body pain due to Qi and Blood deficiency-cold.
Hugu (Pantheris Os), Fuling (Poria Cocos), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma), Ben Cao (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, each 3 zhu).
Make into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add two zhan of water, five slices of ginger, two dates, decoct until one zhan remains, and take at any time.
[Abdominal Pain]
[Liang] Abdominal pain during menstruation is caused by wind-cold invading the Bao Luo (Uterine Vessels) and Chong and Ren vessels, or damaging the Hand-Taiyang and Hand-Shaoyin meridians. Use Wen Jing Tang or Guizhi Tao Ren Tang. If worry and thought cause Qi stagnation and blood stasis, use Guizhi Tao Ren Tang or Dihuang Tongjing Wan. (Formula see Amenorrhea.) If blood knots into masses, use Wanbing Wan.
[Xue] For the above syndromes, if wind-cold damages the Spleen, use Liu Junzi Tang plus Pao Jiang. (Formula see Miscellaneous Diseases Consumptive Weakness.) If worry and thought damage Blood, use Siwu Tang plus Renshen and Baizhu. (Formula see Miscellaneous Diseases Consumptive Weakness.) If worry and thought damage Qi, use Guipi Tang plus Chaihu and Zhizi. (Formula see Miscellaneous Diseases Forgetfulness.) If depression and anger damage Blood, take Guipi Tang and Xiaoyao San together. Refer to previous discussions for other treatments.
[Dai] Abdominal pain during menstruation or when menstruation is absent indicates irregular Blood. To regulate Blood, first regulate Qi. Use Siwu Tang plus 0.5 qian Wuzhuyu and 1 qian Xiangfu. Heqi Yin plus 0.5 qian Wuzhuyu is also usable. For severe pain, use Xianshusuo Tang. However, one must carefully examine if pain is caused by external pathogens or dietary injury rather than Blood. Heqi Yin can treat both. If pain is due to cold leading to stagnation and then pain, use Da Wen Jing Tang; for severe cold, remove Maimendong.
[Dan] Yi Qi Wan treats abdominal pain at the onset of menstruation.
Use Siwu Tang plus Xianshusuo, Chenpi, Mudanpi, and Gancao. For severe pain, administer with Doulin Jiu (Bean-dripping Wine); for mild pain, cook Xiangfu with Tongbian (Child's Urine) and add Tiao Qin (Scutellariae Radix) to form pills. For pain before menstruation, use Siwu Tang plus Taoren, Xiangfu, and Huanglian.
[Hai] Ba Wu Tang treats cramping pain in the umbilical and abdominal region before menstruation, and pain at onset due to sluggish Blood.

Take as one dose, add two zhong of water, decoct until one zhong remains, and take before meals.
[Ben] For women with menstrual congestion, unbearable heart, abdomen, and umbilical pain, and postpartum slow lochia expulsion, blood rushing to the heart causing coma and near-death, use Hupo San.
Jing Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Peng'e Zhu (Curcumae Rhizoma), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Liu Jinu (Ayapani Herba), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Guanzi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Zhen Puhuang (Pollinis Typhae), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, each 1 liang). *Jisheng Fang* lacks Juhua and Puhuang, but has Xianshusuo and Wuyao.
Take the first five herbs, boil with one sheng of black soybeans, half a jin of ginger (sliced), and four sheng of rice vinegar until beans are soft, dry them, add the remaining five herbs, grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine, on an empty stomach before meals. Another prescription omits Juhua and Puhuang, using Wuyao and Xianshusuo, which is also good. This is my family's secret formula. For ordinary Qi and Blood pain, one dose suffices; for postpartum blood rushing to the heart, two doses expel it; regular use is excellent.
