The so-called "Lao Zheng" (Consumptive Fever) comprises twenty-four types, which can be traced according to specific symptoms. Withered hair and brittle scalp, rough skin resembling fish scales or armor plates, indicate that the fever is located outside the skin; a sensation of heat accompanied by aversion to cold and severe tremors of the body indicates that the fever is internal.
Brittle hair, epistaxis (nosebleed), or hematuria (blood in urine) indicate that the fever is in the Blood level.
Body heat, irritability, and pain like needle pricks indicate that the fever is in the Mai (Vessels/Pulse).
Brittle and withered nails, blurred vision, and tight, painful hypochondrium indicate that the fever is in the Jin (Sinews/Tendons).
Blackened and dry incisors, and soreness/pain at Dazhu (BL11), indicate that the fever is in the Gu (Bones).
Pain in the back and spine, and soreness in the thigh bones (Bi), indicate that the fever is in the Sui (Marrow).
Dizziness, head heat and stuffiness, vomiting of turbid saliva, and excessive eye discharge and tears indicate that the fever is in the Nao (Brain).
Spermatorrhea in men and leukorrhea in women indicate that the fever is in the Yufang (Reproductive Organs).
Alternating chills and fever, with stifling and oppression in the Zhongwan (CV12) and Shanzhong (CV17) regions, indicate that the fever is in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner).
Red and yellow urine, turbid like paste, indicates that the fever is in the Pangguang (Bladder).
Irregular transmission, manifesting as either constipation or diarrhea, with borborygmus (rumbling in the abdomen), indicates that the fever is in the Xiaochang (Small Intestine).
Dull pain in the large abdomen, dryness and pain in the mouth and nose, indicates that the fever is in the Dachang (Large Intestine).
Dryness of the mouth and nose, abdominal distension, restlessness during sleep, and spontaneous sweating indicate that the fever is in the Wei (Stomach).
Bitter taste in the mouth, deafness, and pain under the hypochondrium indicate that the fever is in the Dan (Gallbladder).
Tenesmus (straining with little result), and astringent constipation of the anus, indicate that the fever is in the Huichang (Rectum/Descending Colon).
Pain in the lower abdomen, flaccidity of sinews and vessels, and spontaneous erection of the genitalia, indicate that the fever is in the Zongjin (Major Sinews).
Blurred vision, tearing, occasional dizziness, and frequent irritability and anger indicate that the fever is in the Gan (Liver).
Scorched and black tongue, shortness of breath, stifling sensation, and feeling chilly/shivering indicate that the fever is in the Xin (Heart).
Dry lips, oral ulcers, chest and abdominal distension, aversion to cold, and loss of appetite indicate that the fever is in the Pi (Spleen).
Cough, wheezing, chest fullness, expectoration of phlegm and blood, hoarseness, and weak voice indicate that the fever is in the Fei (Lung).
Withered earlobes, soreness from Jiaogong (Beriberi/Foot Distemper), and inability to rise or lie down comfortably indicate that the fever is in the Shen (Kidney).
Restless thoughts, spontaneous spermatorrhea without cause, and continuous discharge of white matter indicate that the fever is in the Right Kidney.
Involvement of Xinbao (Pericardium) and Baoluo (Uterus/Matrix), with a choking sensation in the heart and diaphragm, attacking pain, and feelings of grievance and distress during flexion and extension, indicate that the fever is in the Ge (Diaphragm). Although these syndromes are described differently, their root often involves worms devouring the Heart and Lungs; treatment must not fail to eradicate the root cause.
