Frankincense (Ru Xiang) and Myrrh (Mo Yao) (each 2 qian, ground separately), Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathulae Radix), Qing Yan (Halitum) (each 0.5 liang, ground), Shu Ai (Prepared Mugwort Leaf), Chuan Wu (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Preparata) (3 qian), Quan Xie (Scorpio) (1 qian, stir-fried).
Take the above herbs; except for those already ground into powder, grind the remaining herbs into a fine powder. Then add the pre-ground powders to this mixture and blend evenly. Take one large papaya, cut off one end to serve as a lid, remove the pulp, and place the aforementioned herbs inside the papaya. Secure the lid; place the papaya among black beans and steam until extremely soft. Remove it, peel off the skin, and grind together with the herbs into a paste. Subsequently, add the powder of raw Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), mix thoroughly, and form pills the size of sophora seeds. Each dose consists of 50 pills, taken on an empty stomach with Papaya Decoction, or warm salted wine is also acceptable. Take three times a day. Avoid consuming blood products and garlic.
In the Yisi year, Lady Luo suffered from fever, spontaneous sweating, irritability, emaciation (body like bone standing), foot pain with spasms and contracture preventing flexion and extension, and inability to eat. Even experienced physicians could not cure her. I was summoned to treat her and found her six pulses wiry and weak. I said: "Although the pulse resembles that of Consumption (Lao Bing), it is actually not Consumption. The symptoms resemble Hong Kong Foot (Gout or lower limb joint disorder), but it is not typical Hong Kong Foot. One should first regulate the Spleen to generate Blood; the heat will naturally subside. Then, treating the feet offers hope for recovery." Searching through various prescriptions, I found no medicine suitable for this syndrome. Therefore, I prescribed Si Bai San (Four Whites Powder). After less than half a dose, the fever subsided and she could eat. I then prescribed Cang Zhu Wan (Cang Zhu Pill) to continue treatment. Eventually, her sinews and vessels relaxed, her feet could walk, and she recovered.
For patients with constipation, Qi Xuan Wan, Shen Gong Wan, Qi Sheng Bing Lang Wan, or San He San can be administered with effective results. (All these formulas are recorded in *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*).
Bone-steaming [text missing], Fu Lian, Shi Zhu (Corpse Transmission), Lao Zhu (Consumption Transmission), Chong Zhu (Insect Transmission), Du Zhu (Poison Transmission), Re Zhu (Heat Transmission), Leng Zhu (Cold Transmission), Shi Zhu (Food Transmission), Gui Zhu (Ghost Transmission), etc., are all referred to as "Chuan Shi" (Transmitting Corpse). Since "Zhu" implies "Zhu" (to pour/transfer), meaning the disease transmits from top to bottom and resembles previous cases, it is called "Zhu". Its variations number twenty-two, thirty-six, or ninety-nine types. Generally, it causes alternating chills and fever, night sweats, dreams of sexual intercourse with ghosts, seminal emission and white turbidity, dry and erect hair. Some have abdominal masses; some have small nodules on both sides behind the head, appearing singly or in clusters, moving or dispersing, accompanied by silent depression, coughing with phlegm-saliva; some expectorate pus and blood resembling Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy) or Fei Yong (Lung Abscess); some suffer recurrent diarrhea, extreme emaciation and fatigue, unable to support themselves; accumulating over months and years until death. After death, the disease may transmit to others, even wiping out a whole family. There are also Fei Shi, Dun Shi, Han Shi, Sang Shi, Shi Zhu, etc., known as the "Five Corpses". Along with Da Xiao Fu Zuo (Major and Minor Attachments) syndromes, where patients do not know their specific suffering, feeling discomfort everywhere, this involves demonic evils harming people. Examining via the Three Causes (Internal, External, Neither Internal nor External), internally it is not caused by Seven Emotions, externally not by Four Climatic Factors. Although it seems to belong to Neither Internal nor External Causes, its manifestations are manifold, and its transmission and migration are hard to predict. Thus, from ancient times to now, fewer than one in ten recover. Claims regarding Li Gu (Fox Bone), Ta Gan (Otter Liver), Tian Ling Gai (Human Skull Cap), Tong Jian Bi (Bronze Mirror Nose) are merely theories without observed efficacy. Only灸 (Moxibustion) applied early to Gao Huang Shu (BL43) and Cui Shi Xue (named Si Hua, consisting of six acupoints) might yield a fifty percent success rate; if applied late, it is useless.
When the patient fears cold, has fever, spontaneous sweating, pale complexion, dry eyes, bitter taste, mental instability, fear preventing solitary sleeping, the disease transmits to the Liver.
When the patient fears cold, has fever, dark complexion, dry nose, absent-mindedness and forgetfulness, difficult defecation or alternatively diarrhea, mouth sores, the disease transmits to the Heart.
When the patient fears cold, has fever, greenish complexion, yellow lips, stiff tongue base, inability to swallow, loss of taste, emaciated limbs, spitting saliva, the disease transmits to the Spleen.
When the patient fears cold, has fever, red face, white nose, dry skin and broken hair, coughing and wheezing, frequent spitting of white saliva or blood streaks, the disease transmits to the Lung.
When the patient fears cold, has fever, yellow complexion, scorched ears, [text missing] pain, white turbid urine, dribbling urination, chest pain, the disease transmits to the Kidney.
