It is stated: The Chong and Ren meridians originate within the uterus (Bao Gong) and serve as the sea of the twelve meridians. The Hand-Taiyin Large Intestine Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian are exteriorly-interiorly related. The Heart governs blood; its qi ascends to transform into milk and descends to transform into menstruation. When girls reach fourteen years of age, Tian Gui (substances that promote reproductive maturity) arrives, Kidney Qi becomes fully abundant, the Chong and Ren meridians flow smoothly, menstrual blood fills up, and flows down at the appropriate time, which is named menstruation. It typically occurs once every thirty days, which is referred to as physiological harmony. If menstruation is delayed, it is due to labor injury damaging Qi and Blood, causing stagnation and accumulation, thus leading to amenorrhea.
To treat amenorrhea in women and unmarried girls, accompanied by pain or formation of Xue Jia (abdominal masses), use Tong Jing Wan (Menstruation-Regulating Pill).
Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), Qing Pi (Aurantium Peel), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, stir-baked), Chuan Jiao (Sichuan Pepper), E Zhu (Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome), Chuan Wu (Aconitum Carmichaelii Lateral Root, soaked and peeled), Gan Qi (Dried Lacquer, crushed and stir-fried until smoke ceases), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Tao Ren (Peach Seed, skin and tip removed, double-kernel ones excluded, stir-baked with bran), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) (all in equal parts).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder, divide into four portions. Take one portion, simmer with rice vinegar to form a paste, and mix with the remaining three portions of herb powder to form pills. Pound in a mortar. Shape into pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds, and dry them. Each dose consists of 20 pills, taken with light vinegar water, up to 30 pills; warm wine may also be used. Take on an empty stomach, before meals.
To treat amenorrhea in unmarried girls. (From *Sheng Hui Fang*)
Xiong Shu Shi (Male Rat Feces, 1 liang) is burned to retain its properties, then ground into a fine powder. On an empty stomach, take 1 qian mixed with warm wine. This is highly effective.
Kou Zongshi states: Human life is based on Qi and Blood. Diseases do not occur without first injuring Qi and Blood. There are unmarried girls and young boys whose minds are burdened with excessive thoughts and over-anxiety, often resulting in consumptive disorders. In men, mental spirit scatters first; in women, menstruation closes first. Why is this so? Generally, sorrow and anxiety injure the Heart. When the Heart is injured, blood becomes rebellious and exhausted. When blood is rebellious and exhausted, mental spirit scatters first, and menstruation closes first. Since Fire (Heart Fire) is diseased, it cannot nourish its offspring (Spleen Earth), leading to poor appetite. Since the Spleen is deficient, Metal (Lung) Qi is depleted, leading to coughing. Once coughing occurs, Water (Kidney) Qi is cut off, leading to dry limbs. Since Wood (Liver) Qi is insufficient, irritability increases, temples and hair become brittle, and tendons become flaccid. After the pathology spreads through all five Zang organs, death does not occur immediately, but ultimately will. Among these types of consumption, this one is the most difficult to treat. Because the disease originates within the five Zang organs, there is no definite end date, and medicinal power cannot reach it. If the patient can change their mindset and receive medicinal support, there is a chance of survival out of nine deaths. Taking this as an example, other types of consumption can be treated according to pulse and syndrome.
Zhang states: For unmarried girls with long-standing amenorrhea, Qing Hao (Artemisia Annua Herba) and other cooling medicines must absolutely not be used. Physicians often believe that unmarried girls have Blood Heat, so they use cooling medicines to resolve it. They fail to realize that blood flows when warmed and coagulates when cooled. *Yang Sheng Bi Yong Fang* discusses this in detail. This theory is very reasonable and should not be ignored.
If menstruation is scanty and gradually stops, accompanied by vexation and pain in the hands, feet, bones, and flesh, progressive emaciation, and developing tidal fever, with a slightly rapid pulse, this is caused by Yin deficiency and Blood weakness, allowing Yang to invade. Just as little water cannot extinguish a raging fire, the fire forces the water to dry up, depleting body fluids. One should nourish Blood and benefit Yin. Caution is advised against using toxic medicines to forcibly unblock menstruation. Bai Zi Ren Wan (Biota Seed Pill) and Ze Lan Tang (Lycopus Decoction) are suitable.
