The wife of Mr. Shi Jingyang, aged fifty-eight, had phlegm-fluid retention in the left hypochondrium. Whenever the phlegm-fluid rose to the throat, she experienced distension and fullness followed by loss of consciousness, generalized swelling, inability to lie down, and dark red urine. Her pulse was examined: both cun (inch) and guan (bar) positions were surging, slippery, and rapid; all six positions were rapid. I diagnosed this as a Phlegm-Fire syndrome (Phlegm-Fire syndrome). Phlegm generates heat, and heat generates wind, which is why each episode resulted in loss of consciousness. I prescribed Niuhuang Qingxin Wan (Calculus Bovis Heart-Clearing Pill), Liangge Wan (Cooling Diaphragm Pill), and Heihu Dan (Black Tiger Pill) to be taken together. She slept that night, and her mental state became calm. Subsequently, Erchen Tang (Two-Chen Decoction) was administered with additions of Talcum (Huashi, 滑石), Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru, 竹茹), Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome (Yujin, 郁金), Mint (Bohe, 薄荷), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, 黄芩), Peucedanum Root (Qianhu, 前胡), along with Juncus Effusus Stem (Dengxin, 灯心) and Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 生姜) decocted and taken orally. She recovered completely.
The wife of Tu Xuexuan, one day postpartum, was angered. She presented with diarrhea, stupor with loss of consciousness, high fever, shortness of breath, and profuse sweating. The attending physicians stated that a large pulse is inappropriate after childbirth. Her pulse was large and scattered at the left hand, accompanied by sweating and panting, which they deemed incurable according to medical principles. I said, "Indeed so. It is recorded that some patients die despite treatment, but none have recovered without medication. Is it better to watch them die without treatment, or to treat them in hopes of saving their lives?" I attempted treatment. Urgently, I prescribed Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma Rubra (Renshen, 人参) 5 qian, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) 3 qian, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhi Gancao, 炙甘草) 1.5 qian, Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum (Pao Jiang, 炮姜) 2 qian, Myristicae Semen (Rougu, 肉豆蔻) 6 fen, and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 五味子) 7 fen, decocted and taken orally. She slept slightly that night. I was secretly pleased; sleeping after tonification indicated the harmonization of Yin and Yang. The next morning, her pulse had indeed become slightly restrained, and her panting eased. She had three episodes of diarrhea in the first half of the night, drank half a bowl of porridge at wu geng (3-5 AM), and urination became smooth. There was significant vitality. Again, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma Rubra (Renshen, 人参) and Donkey-Hide Gelatin (Ejiao, 阿胶) were used as Sovereign herbs to consolidate Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi) and stabilize panting; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) and Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum (Pao Jiang, 炮姜) as Minister herbs to tonify Spleen; Lantana Herb (Zelan Ye, 泽兰叶) as Assistant herb to clear postpartum heat; Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 五味子) to astringe Shen (Spirit) and stop sweating, and Myristicae Semen (Rougu, 肉豆蔻) to stop diarrhea, also as Assistant herbs; Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) as Envoy herb to harmonize the middle. After five doses, she recovered.
The wife of Mr. Tu Xueheng, due to lack of postpartum nourishment, presented with mental fatigue, weak Spleen and Stomach, intermittent pain in the middle abdomen, and diarrhea. Both hands' pulses were soggy, soft, and powerless. Liu Junzi Tang (Six-Gentleman Decoction) was administered with additions of Agastache Rhizome (Huoxiang, 藿香), Amomum Fruit (Sharen, 砂仁), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu, 香附), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术), and Alisma Rhizome (Zexie, 泽泻). She recovered after regulation.
