Mr. Donggang, Prefect Cao, suffered from pain in the right hypochondrium. Palpation revealed a wiry and large pulse on the left and a slippery and large pulse on the right; this was caused by external wind invasion and internal food injury. Additionally, he had coughing, with pain worsening at night, a fat body with a bluish complexion, and both sleep and appetite were abandoned. I administered Zisu (Perilla Leaf) and Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) to release the exterior, Baijiezi (White Mustard Seed), Guipi (Cinnamon Bark), and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) to treat the hypochondriac pain, Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus) and Luobozhi (Radish Seed) to digest the food stagnation, Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed), Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Pericarp), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), and Gualouren (Trichosanthis Semen) to treat the cough. After four doses, diet improved, cough ceased, and hypochondriac pain decreased by seventy percent. Subsequently, Baohe Wan (Harmonize the Stomach Pill) was administered, leading to recovery.
Mr. Jingyang, Magistrate of Yixing, had floating heat in the upper jiao (Upper Burner) and food stagnation with phlegm-fluid retention in the stomach. He usually preferred hot foods; slightly cool foods would cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. Occasionally, redness appeared after defecation. Due to mental labor stirring up fire, sores and boils appeared on the head and face causing pain. The pulse was rapid on the left and slippery-rapid on the right. Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), and Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) were each used at two qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) at one qian, Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), and Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) each at one qian, Fuling (Poria) at eight fen, and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) at five fen. After four doses, all sores and boils healed. Subsequently, Baohe Wan (Harmonize the Stomach Pill) was modified with Jianglian (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Bile Scutellariae), Huashi (Talcum), Hongqu (Red Yeast Rice), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) made into pills and taken for half a month, resulting in complete health.
Mr. Wuyuan suffered from coughing and dry mouth, a sensation of fire rolling in the abdomen, unaware of satiety or hunger, and no desire for food. He had pain in the right hypochondrium. The pulse was slippery-rapid on the right and wiry-rapid on the left, indicating phlegm accumulation in the middle jiao (Middle Burner). First, Zongguan Wan (Chief Commander Pill) was used to remove phlegm, followed by spleen nourishment. After taking it, a large amount of thick, sticky, yellow mushy stool was discharged, and urine resembled blood, indicating heat moving downward. Then, Baohe Wan (Harmonize the Stomach Pill) was used to regulate the spleen and eliminate residual phlegm, preventing new food intake from generating phlegm. Externally (via oral administration), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Jiuhuang Qin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Huashi (Talcum) were taken, eliminating the cough.
Madam Wu, wife of Hezhou, suffered from epigastric pain. Physicians attributed it to parasites, fire, phlegm, qi stagnation, food stagnation, deficiency, blood stasis, or cold. Various theories abounded, yet hundred treatments failed, and the crowd unanimously labeled it a strange disease. Upon my diagnosis, both hands showed large but forceless pulses, counting six beats per breath. I said: Is it truly a strange disease? It is merely a syndrome of liver overcoming spleen. Following Li Dongyuan's treatment principles, for abdominal pain, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) is the sovereign herb; if there is aversion to heat with pain, adding Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) is effective. Applying this method ensures complete success. Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) four qian, half raw and half wine-fried, acts as the sovereign herb to subdue the liver and tonify the spleen; Da Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) two qian, half honey-fried and half raw, acts as the minister herb to soothe the liver and tonify the spleen; Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus) serves as the assistant herb; Chaohei Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen prepared and charred black) and Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces) each one qian act as the envoy herb to relieve pain. After three doses, the illness was cured. Mr. Hezhou rejoiced, saying: You truly possess divine medicinal skills to subdue strange diseases! Alas!
