Twelve Congenital Syndromes (In Utero)
1. Bilateral blindness (Shuanggu). 2. Monocular blindness (Zhimiao). 3. Syndactyly of thumb and index finger (Pianmu). 4. Polydactyly with six fingers (Liuzhi). 5. Physical deformity or mutilation (Tican). 6. Limb paralysis or atrophy (Zhi fei). 7. Solitary kidney (Dushen). 8. Aphonia or muteness (Yinya). 9. Cleft lip (Quechun). 10. Facial malformation resembling premature aging (She lao). 11. Finger contracture or clenched fist (Luanquan). 12. Dwarfism (Zhurou).
Twelve Postnatal Syndromes
1. Proptosis or bulging eyes (Jingtu). 2. Myopia or nearsightedness (Jindu). 3. Nasal obstruction (Bi sai). 4. Eversion of the auricle (Er fan). 5. Prominent laryngeal prominence (Jiehou). 6. Neck goiter or swelling (Xiangying). 7. Short tongue (She duan). 8. Joint clicking or popping (Jie dan). 9. Pigeon chest or carinatum sternum (Guixiong). 10. Kyphosis or hunchback (Tuobei). 11. Genu appositum or knees touching (Xi bing). 12. Criss-cross ankles or bowlegs (Jiaojing).
Polydactyly (Six Fingers)
For infants born with six fingers, surgeons use a sharp knife to amputate the extra digit. Applying raw oil paste externally often results in healing without visible scars.
Cleft Lip
Infants born with cleft lips can also undergo surgical repair. However, scars cannot be completely concealed. Among the twelve syndromes, only these two have effective treatment methods. What ancients could not cure, descendants have achieved. A thousand years later, there will undoubtedly be those who can treat diseases currently deemed incurable by physicians.
From conception to birth and growth, the fetus inherits the Five Elements (Wu Xing) which differentiate into the Five Zang Organs. Thus, from the Five Qi arise five distinct physical constitutions. The *Shengji Jing* states: "The Five Elements nurture distinct essences; the Five Constitutions preserve unique Qi." Uniform endowment leads to hidden differences in physique and temperament due to the mother's Qi during gestation having fluctuations of excess, deficiency, emptiness, and fullness. Consequently, offspring are born with varying degrees of robustness, timidity, courage, and weakness. As the classics state: "Deficient Heart Qi causes delayed speech; weak Liver Qi causes delayed walking; weak Spleen Qi causes emaciation; timid Kidney Qi causes fontanelle non-closure (Jiechu)." Such cases are all consistent with this principle. Although the Qi of the Five Zang Organs varies in inheritance, for those with deficiency or timidity, the Sages provided formulas and medicines for tonification and nourishment.
Heart
When Heart Qi is abundant, the child is intelligent, speaks and laughs early, has a clear spirit, and abundant hair. When Heart Qi is timid/deficient, the child is dull, speaks late, hair grows slowly or not at all, and if it grows, it is not black. The Heart governs Blood, and hair is the surplus of Blood. Timidity leads to prolonged absence of hair growth. The Heart connects to the root of the tongue; timidity leads to delayed speech.
To treat infants born without hair, burn crucian carp to ash, mix with sauce, and apply to the scalp. Hair will grow.
Jusheng Dan (Sesame Pill)

Liver
When Liver Qi is abundant, the child is agile and walks/stands early. When Liver Qi is timid/deficient, the child cannot walk even when grown, and legs are thin, known as Crane Knee (He Xi). The Liver governs tendons; timidity leads to weak tendons, hence inability to walk. Eyebrows may also fail to grow for a long time; eyebrows belong to the Liver. If Liver Qi does not nourish, eyebrows do not grow. How do we know eyebrows belong to the Liver? All five Zang organs have associated hairs. Hair belongs to the Heart; Heart is Fire, Fire flares upward, so hair grows on the head. Beard belongs to the Kidney; Kidney is Water, Water flows downward, so beard grows downward. Women lack external Kidneys, hence no beard. Body hair belongs to the Lung; the Lung is superior among Zang organs and governs the exterior, so hair grows on the skin surface. Eyelashes belong to the Spleen; eyelids belong to the Spleen. The Spleen is positioned slightly to the right, so eyelashes slant upward on the eyelids. Eyebrows belong to the Liver; the Liver is positioned slightly to the left, so eyebrows slant upward above the eyelashes. Left is superior, Right is inferior. Thus, eyebrows are above and eyelashes below.

Lung
When Lung Qi is abundant, skin is bright white, smooth, and greasy; hair is fine, black, and light. When Lung Qi is timid/deficient, skin is rough and degenerated, appearing like blood coagulation without skin. Hence *Baojian* calls it Blood Coagulation. Sun Simiao stated: "Upon birth, infant flesh is still blood, gradually hardening." The Lung governs skin. If Lung Qi is insufficient, blood degenerates, failing to form proper skin. Thus, without hair/skin, blood coagulates; face around nose/mouth is yellow, eyes closed, face pinched, mouth dry, limbs immobile, crying without sound, refusing suckling. This is failure of skin/hair to consolidate. Most such infants do not survive. *Qianjin Fang* treats with Longdan Tang (see below).
To treat newborn blood coagulation, non-consolidated skin/flesh, silent crying, refusal to suckle: Grind Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate) fine, mix with wine, apply. Reapply when dry.

When Kidney Qi is timid/deficient, fontanelle remains open (Jiechu) and does not close, teeth erupt late or not firmly, complexion is pale, eyes have excessive white sclera. The Kidney governs bone marrow; brain is the Sea of Marrow. Timidity leads to incomplete brain/marrow formation, hence fontanelle remains open. Unclosed fontanelle invites myriad diseases, difficult to care for. This is a major disease. Kidney governs bones; teeth are surplus of bone. Timidity leads to delayed tooth eruption.
Yuru Dan (Jade Milk Pill)
