Facial Zang-Fu Distribution and Color
The left cheek corresponds to the Liver. The right cheek corresponds to the Lung. The forehead corresponds to the Heart. The nose corresponds to the Spleen. (Another theory states that the lips and mouth correspond to the Spleen.) The chin (Yi area) corresponds to the Kidney. A bluish color indicates Wind pathogen; a red color indicates Heat pathogen; a yellow color indicates Food retention; a white color indicates Qi deficiency; a black color indicates Cold pathogen.
Facial Zang-Fu Colors Corresponding to the Four Seasons
Medical classics state that the colors of the Five Zang organs manifest externally on the face; thus, life, death, and diseases are associated with these colors. The Liver governs Spring, its color being Green; the Heart governs Summer, its color being Red; the Spleen governs Late Summer, its color being Yellow; the Lung governs Autumn, its color being White; the Kidney governs Winter, its color being Black. These are referred to as the intrinsic colors of the Five Zang organs, flourishing on the face according to the four seasons. If the color is neither deep nor shallow, but maintains luster and moisture, it indicates a state of harmony and health. If the color is heavy and deep, it indicates excess in the corresponding Zang organ; if light and pale, it indicates deficiency in the corresponding Zang organ.
Facial Zang-Fu Colors Indicating Life and Death
Medical classics state: Lustrous and vibrant colors indicate life. Green like a kingfisher's feather, red like a rooster's comb, yellow like a crab's belly, white like suet, black like a crow's feather. Dry and withered colors indicate death. Green like dead grass, red like coagulated blood, yellow like dried zhi shi (Fructus Aurantii), white like dry bone, black like soot.

Facial Zang-Fu Colors Showing Seasonal Overcoming (Cheng)
Medical classics state: Green and Red appearing in Spring, Red and Yellow in Summer, Yellow and White in Late Summer, White and Black in Autumn, Black and Green in Winter. This represents the generation cycle of the Five Zang organs and the sequential progression of the Five Elements, indicating mild disease. If the Liver color appears Green-White (Metal overcoming Wood), the Heart color appears Red-Black (Water overcoming Fire), the Spleen color appears Yellow-Green (Wood overcoming Earth), the Lung color appears White-Red (Fire overcoming Metal), or the Kidney color appears Black-Yellow (Earth overcoming Water). These represent the colors of the True Zang organs and the overcoming cycle of the Five Elements, indicating severe disease.
Facial and Ocular Colors Indicating Life and Death
The *Neijing* (Inner Canon) states: In any illness, if the face is yellow while the eyes are green, red, white, or black, the patient will not die. The *Shengji Jing* (Holy Relief Classic) states: The Spleen's true qi is the root. The reason why a yellow face indicates survival is due to the manifestation of true qi externally. Conversely, if the face is green with red eyes, green face with white eyes, green face with black eyes, black face with white eyes, or red face with green eyes, the patient will die. This is because there is no external flourishing of Spleen color, and the true qi has been exhausted.
Color Above the Nose
The *Shengji Jing* states: Cyan at the nasal tip indicates cold abdomen; black indicates fluid accumulation; white indicates blood deficiency; yellow indicates chest cold; red indicates wind pathogen; bright and clear indicates retained fluids (Liu Yin).
Color Inside the Eyes
Red indicates Heart Heat; pale red indicates Deficiency Heat; green indicates Liver Heat; pale green indicates Liver Deficiency; yellow indicates Spleen Heat; lack of luster in the eyes indicates Kidney Deficiency.
Death Colors from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*
In pediatric patients, if black color covers the entire face, or surrounds the mouth and enters the lips, or extends over the eyebrows and around the eyes, or darkens the Renzhong point, it indicates death. If green color spreads across the face, connecting the eyes into the ears, it indicates death. Lack of luster in the eyes, or presence of foreign matter in the eyes resembling a horizontal red needle, indicates death.
