Chapter: All Types of Gan Syndrome Part 3 (3/5)
Category: Comprehensive
For carbuncles and ulcers on the back, and miasma pestilence (Lanzhang Qi), as soon as headache is felt and stiffness/tightness in the back and shoulders occurs, this medicine should be taken immediately. The dosage is adjusted until a brisk bowel movement is achieved. Regular use can prevent contracting miasma diseases. All miasma diseases are caused by excess heat in the spleen and stomach, and are commonly treated with cooling medicines. For heat congestion in the upper chest/diaphragm, using this medicine to promote unblocking and purgation is even more effective. This pill was originally highly effective for treating Lanzhang and warm malaria (a type of malaria with periodic chills and fever). Li Xiaoli Dunyu once circulated this prescription and carved it on stone at Dayu Ridge; the number of people who benefited from its efficacy is countless. My elder uncle served in Fujian and once led troops to suppress mountain bandits. Passing through Zhangpu, all soldiers contracted malaria. Using this medicine to treat them, they recovered at that time. When I was in Jiangnan, during a year when warm malaria was prevalent, I used this medicine to help people, and its efficacy was miraculous. In all cases, the goal was to achieve a brisk bowel movement. It is also recorded: For chronic malaria, after taking medicine, moxibustion should be applied to Qihai (Ren-6, located 1.5 cun below the umbilicus) for one hundred moxa cones, and then to Zhongwan (Ren-12, located 4 cun above the umbilicus) for thirty moxa cones, which is particularly beneficial. "Zhang's Family Collection" states: The prescription for treating Gan syndrome (childhood malnutrition/wasting disease) and expelling miasma used by Academician Li of the Ministry of Justice was obtained from Ma Ducheng, with slight variations in dosage: Mugwort (Muxiang) and Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi) each two liang; Rhubarb (Dahuang), Ginseng (Renshen), and Magnolia Bark (Houpo) each one liang; Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Areca Seed (Binglang), Cardamom (Doukou), and Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) each three liang; the remaining herbs each half a liang; and Semen Koelpinia (Qianniuzi) one sheng.
