*Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases in Chao's Work) on the condition of "Ke Wu" (Sudden Shock/Invasion by External Evil) in infants: When an infant suffers from Ke Wu, it is because the infant's Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy) is weak. Suddenly encountering unusual objects or being touched by people they have never seen before causes these external stimuli to clash with the infant's Shen Qi, leading to illness. This is called Ke Wu. It is also known as "Zhong Ke" (Struck by Guest) or "Zhong Ren" (Struck by Person). The symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea of green, yellow, or white substances, where food and water separate; abdominal pain with the body arching backward and twisting; facial color changing unpredictably presenting five hues; symptoms resembling epilepsy (Xian Zheng), but without upward deviation of the eyes. The pulse is wiry (Xian), rapid (Ji), and frequent (Shu). If treatment is delayed, it becomes difficult to cure after a long time. If the wet nurse drinks excessively, engages in sexual activity while drunk, and nurses the baby while still panting, this condition is most severe and can even kill the infant. (For cases with a rapid and frequent pulse, it is appropriate to use Long Dan Tang (Gentian Decoction) to purge, adding Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), with dosages adjusted equally according to the proportion of Long Dan Zhi (Gentian Juice).)
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou* (Ge Hong's Elbow Manual) discusses: When an infant falls ill with a soft body and occasional consciousness, it is called Xian (Epilepsy); when the body is stiff and arched backward with no consciousness, it is called Jing (Stiffness/Spasm). All diseases of Ke Wu generally present with vomiting and diarrhea of green, yellow, or white substances. The signs resemble epilepsy, but the eyes do not roll up. This refers to the separation of water and grain.
*Qian Jin* (Thousand Gold Formulas) discusses: The reason infants and young children suffer from Ke Wu disease is that the breath of outsiders clashes with them. It is also named Zhong Ren, which is Ke Wu. Even if it is family members or people from other rooms/households, whether it is the wet nurse or parents returning from outside, if their clothes carry the coarse, violent qi of ghosts/spirits, or the smell of cattle and horses, it constitutes a clash. Nursing when laborers are panting or the milk qi has not settled will all cause Ke Wu. There must be no human hair in infants' clothes, cloth, silk, or cotton, nor in shoes. Wearing white clothes with green belts, or blue clothes with white belts, will all cause Zhong Wu. Any unusual person or object coming from outside can also startle the infant and cause illness. The method of prevention is: whenever outsiders or strange objects enter the house, keep the infant away and ensure they do not see them. If avoidance is not possible, burn cow dung so that there is always smoke at the entrance, which is beneficial.
Infants suffering from Ke Wu can get sick at any time. But why do all infants fall ill in early autumn? Is it that all infants are struck by guest evil? Infants get fewer illnesses in spring and winter but more in summer and autumn because in summer and autumn, the infant's Yang Qi is on the exterior, and the blood vessels are tender and weak. In late summer and early autumn, sudden cold occurs in the mornings and evenings. Due to their tender constitution, infants are easily injured externally. Sudden cold damages the Yang Qi; when Yang Qi binds, it causes high fever; when the stomach is cold, it causes dysentery. Therefore, infants often suffer from high fever and dysentery in late summer and early autumn. It is not necessarily all caused by Ke Wu. Regarding the treatment of infants, one should frequently observe the temperature changes in late summer and early autumn. If there is sudden cold, infants are prone to high fever and dysentery. One must not use purgatives first; instead, one should first detoxify (eliminate pathogenic factors) and then purge.
When an infant suffers from Ke Wu, quickly examine the area around the uvula in the mouth. There should be swollen, dark blue-black nodules the size of hemp seeds, colored red, white, or green. In such cases, prick them quickly with a needle and suck out the blood. Alternatively, scratch them open with fingernails to drain the blood, and wipe the blood away using cotton wrapped around the head of a hairpin. The disease of Ke Wu in infants involves vomiting and diarrhea of green, yellow, red, and white juices, abdominal pain, body arching and lying on the side, panting resembling epilepsy, but without upward eye deviation and with little sleep. The face changes colors, and the pulse is wiry and rapid. If left untreated for too long, it becomes difficult to cure. To treat it, take several heaping spoonfuls of Dou Chi (Fermented Soybeans), moisten with water, pound until cooked, and form into pills the size of chicken eggs. Rub these pills on the infant's fontanelle, palms, and soles five or six times each. After finishing, rub the pill on the infant's chest and navel, moving up and down in circles. Break it open after a short while; there should be fine hairs inside. Throw the pill onto the road, and the pain will stop. (*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* also records this Dou Chi formula, called *Duan Ju Fang*, but it is not as detailed as here.)
Mr. Mao describes the manifestations of Ke Wu: Eyes rolling, stiff back and waist, stiff neck, stiff hands and feet, body arching backward like a bow, and black complexion. This condition arises because the newborn never goes outside. When invited to be a wet nurse, carriers carrying the baby may have sweat odor, axillary odor, or smells of cattle and horses, which the baby inhales. Since the baby's five zang organs and blood/qi are immature and tender, inhaling these qi accumulates in the heart. Over time, wind pathogens exploit the deficiency to trigger this condition.
*Ying Tong Bao Jian* (Baby Mirror) Song on Infant Ke Wu:
Ke Wu is often caused by clashes with people or objects, and encountering ghostly qi is similar. Vomiting green, yellow, and white foam, with separated food/water and abdominal pain. Facial colors change frequently, and the pulse is wiry, rapid, and frequent, unrelated to wind. Similar to epilepsy and shock syndromes, the eyes show abnormalities indicating wind.
*Qian Jin* Formula for treating infants with Ke Wu, stiff neck, and near-death state:
Take ten white fish found in clothes, grind into powder, apply to the mother's breast, and let the infant drink. It cures immediately upon swallowing. Another method: Use two fish, place them on the mother's hand covering the infant's navel. The infant cures after vomiting/diarrhea. Can also massage the infant's neck and stiff spine.
*Qian Jin* Formula for treating infant Ke Wu, applying two-substance loess to the head:
Equal parts of loess from the stove and earthworm feces, pounded together, mixed with water to the size of a chicken egg yolk. Apply to the infant's head and five centers (palms, soles, chest). Effective. Another version: Mix with egg white to a paste.
*Qian Jin* Another Formula:
Swallow Mosiang (Musk) the size of a bean. Cures immediately. *Sheng Hui Fang* grinds it into powder, mixes with clear water for a dose of "one character". (*Guang Li Fang* treats Ke Wu by mixing musk and applying to the infant's mouth.)
*Qian Jin* Formula for treating infants with periodic attacks of Ke Wu:
Cover the infant with the mother's menstrual cloth. Very effective.
*Qian Jin Yi* (Supplement to Thousand Gold) Double Pill Formula for treating newborns with Ke Wu, Zhong E (Evil Strike), epilepsy, fever, indigestion, wind-stroke with body reversal, tongue protrusion, Zhu Wu (infectious disease) with blue face, upward eye deviation, abdominal distension, epilepsy, emaciation, Zhu infection, and failure to walk by age three.
Ingredients: Mosiang (Musk), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome - from Xuanzhou, 2 liang each), Dansha (Cinnabar), Te Sheng Fan Shi (Alum, calcined), Fuzi (Aconite Root, processed, peeled), Xionghuang (Realgar), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Wuzui Yu Gu (Cuttlefish Bone, 1 liang each), Badou (Croton Seed, 60 seeds, peeled, heart removed, roasted), Chi Tou Wugong (Red-headed Centipede, 1 piece, roasted. *Sheng Hui Fang* uses half the musk and niuhuang, adds half a centipede).
Pound and sieve the eleven ingredients separately. Grind Badou into a paste separately, then mix with other herbs. Blend with refined honey and pound 3,000 times. Seal tightly to prevent gas leakage. For infants 10 days to 1 month old, administer 2 pills the size of millet grains daily. For 40 days to 100 days, administer 2 pills the size of sesame seeds daily. For over 1 year, increase dosage as appropriate. For small infants with severe illness, increase pill size; do not strictly follow this size. Infants with Ke Wu are often resistant to drugs; sweating indicates efficacy. If no sweat, not cured. Administer 4-5 times a day until sweating occurs. Regarding infants struck by guests: If a woman nurses a new baby while still nursing an older one, it can cause Ke Wu. Blood in the mouth is "Yue Ke" (Monthly Guest). If present, administer this medicine to save the infant. Saliva accumulation and abdominal heat require moxibustion on the navel (up to 14 moxa cones) along with diligent medication. For mothers who lost a child, if the baby's cry hasn't stopped after falling, scrape the tongue to remove blood like a leek leaf, then administer 2 pills the size of millet grains. Continue for 7 days. No case fails. If Chi Tou Wugong is unavailable, Chi Zu (red-footed) centipedes work; use the first two segments of three pieces; the rear part is unusable.
