Mr. Mao pointed out that if a newborn infant presents with the signs of Slow Spleen Wind (Man Pi Feng): frequent vomiting, constant teeth grinding, convulsive twitching of the limbs, curled tongue and drooping head, eyes staring upward, initially with the head low and gradually raising it.
This condition often arises from prolonged diarrhea or dysentery treated inappropriately with cold-purgative medicines. Although the diarrhea may stop, the Spleen's function is not restored, leading to Spleen deficiency and invasion by other Zang-Fu organs taking advantage of the deficiency. Therefore, treatment should first use Yunqi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder) (see section on Disharmony of Stomach Qi) for one day, followed by administering Zuigao (Intoxicating Paste) for purgation (see this section). Thereafter, continuously administer Zhipi San (Spleen-Regulating Powder) (see this section) combined with Zhenxin Wan (Heart-Calming Pill) (see section on All Kinds of Fright) and Jianpi San (Spleen-Strengthening Powder) (see section on Disharmony of Stomach Qi), which will lead to recovery. If symptoms such as panting and vomiting, five types of throat obstruction (Wu Geng), and body stiffness resembling opisthotonos appear, these are signs of death and are incurable.
The *Yu Jue* records the signs of Slow Spleen Wind in infants: This occurs after wind-cold or measles, where unskilled physicians fail to understand the exterior and interior conditions, prematurely using purgatives and allowing hot and cold medicines to conflict. This causes the infant to have convulsions without eye deviation, extreme Spleen exhaustion leading to unconsciousness, and flaccid limbs. This disease can only be cured by restoring Yang, awakening the Spleen, and regulating treatment. If vomiting and diarrhea recur, life will certainly be endangered.
Mr. Mao’s verse on infants contracting Spleen Wind:
Cold extremities, body heavy and lethargic, due to excessive emesis and purgation with delayed tonification. Dampness lingers in the Spleen and Stomach, phlegm obstructs the Lungs, Heart generates toxic heat causing a greenish complexion. Such excessive saliva indicates Slow Spleen signs; if accompanied by panting and coughing with obstruction, it is difficult to treat.
Verse from *Xiao Er Xing Zheng Lun* on the forty-eight manifestations of Slow Convulsion transmitting to Slow Spleen:
Slow Spleen results solely from damaging the Spleen and Stomach, leading to abnormal transformation. Vomiting and diarrhea leave deficient phlegm in the Spleen and Stomach; cold extremities and frequent vomiting occur. The pulse is deep and difficult to feel; waking up is hard, how can it be easily understood? Lips red, eyes open, hands slightly twitching; the disease path travels through the Heart channel and Spleen spirit. Physicians should prioritize calming the Heart and opening orifices, discussing carefully. Do not let panting worsen or the head become soft first; if the whites of the eyes turn white and rigid, life is lost.
This disease involves Wind-Fright transmitting to the Stomach, which also has deficient phlegm. Administer Daqing Dan (Great Blue Pill) one or two doses, then use Chubi San (Nasal-Inhalation Powder) to open the orifices. (Daqing Dan formula see section on Acute Wind-Fright; Chubi San see this section.) Subsequently use Xingpi San (Awakening Spleen Powder) (see this section).
Another verse on the forty-eight manifestations of impending death in Slow Spleen:
Wind-Fright entering epilepsy transmits to the Spleen; the child lies straight and motionless like a corpse. Convulsions have ceased, twitching is fixed; appearing well, no need to doubt. Bowel movements and urination are smooth but unable to suck milk; the whole body is ice-cold, sweat like mud. Eyes unclear, always seeming asleep; in sleep, unknowingly departing to the underworld.
Another verse on the forty-eight manifestations of Slow Spleen invading the Lungs:
Slow Spleen involves heavy sleep and repeated treatments; vomiting and diarrhea transmit, making the Spleen and Stomach more deficient. Cold extremities bring multiple burdens; deficient phlegm hides in the Spleen, abundant and hard to remove. Generating Wind invades the Lung organ, adding evil obstruction; calling a thousand times, breath is still uncomfortable. Do not let the eyes close and neck become soft; ten people, hardly one survives.
Mr. Mao’s Huopo San (Spleen-Reviving Powder) for infant Slow Spleen Wind-Fright:
Sheep feces (31 pieces, roasted) Dingxiang (Clove, 100 grains) Hujiao (Pepper, 50 grains)
Grind into fine powder. Take half a qian each time, mixed with decoction of wall soil exposed to the east sun for six years.
Mr. Mao’s Xingpi San (Awakening Spleen Powder) for infant Slow Spleen Wind:
Maqinzi Baijiangcan (White Silkworm) Dingxiang (Clove)
Grind the three ingredients into equal parts powder. Take one qian each time, mixed with decoction of roasted Citrus reticulata peel.
Mr. Mao’s Yizuigao (Intoxicating Paste) for infant Slow Spleen Wind signs:
Huashebi (Flower Snake Nose) Xiewei (Scorpion Tail) Tiannanxingxin (Arisaema Core) Chuanwuqi (Sichuan Aconite Navel) Dafuzi ce (Large Aconite Side) Baifuzi er (Typhonium Ear) Wugongchudu (Centipede Belly)
Each of the seven ingredients, half a qian, used raw. Mix with 50 jujube meats, grind into a paste, and form pills the size of a large bead.
