According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Master Chao) regarding the syndrome of Qi Lin (Qi Strangury) in children: Qi Lin is caused by Kidney deficiency, where the Bladder is affected by heat qi from the Lung. When qi stagnates in the Bladder, it causes distension. The Lung governs qi; when qi is invaded by heat, it flows downward into the Bladder. The Bladder and Kidney have a interior-exterior relationship. Heat in the Bladder leads to qi obstruction and failure to dissipate. This manifests as fullness of qi in the lower abdomen, inability to promote water metabolism, resulting in painful, difficult urination characteristic of strangury. The symptoms include fullness of the Bladder and lower abdomen, astringent and difficult urination, and often a sensation of incomplete emptying with post-void dribbling. It is also referred to as "Qi Long" (Qi Retention). Upon diagnosis, if the Shaoyin pulse is rapid, this condition in males is identified as Qi Lin.
*Ji Yan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) offers Disengaging Sage Powder (Disengaging Sage San) for treating Qi Lin:
Red Peony Root (Chi Shaoyao) (one tael, raw), Areca Seed (Binglang) (one piece, wrapped in flour and roasted until yellow).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one qian per dose, decocted in one cup of water until reduced to seven-tenths. Take on an empty stomach, three times daily. Recovery will be immediate. For infants, reduce the dosage accordingly.
*Ying Ru Shu* (Book for Infants and Children) provides a formula for treating infant Qi Long:
Take the hair from the prepuce of a male ox, burn it to ash, grind it finely, and administer one dao gui with warm rice water, twice daily. The disease will resolve immediately.
According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* regarding the syndrome of Re Lin (Heat Strangury) in children: Re Lin occurs when heat qi in the Triple Burner transmits to the Kidney and Bladder, flowing into the bladder/cyst region to cause strangury.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* (Imperial Grace Formulary of the Taiping Era) states: Reddish, astringent, and obstructed urination in children is due to heat in both the Bladder and Kidney. The Kidney governs water, and the Bladder is the fu-organ of fluids. These two meridians share an interior-exterior relationship. Water passes through the Small Intestine, enters the bladder to become urine. Currently, with excess heat in the zang-fu organs, heat travels to the bladder, causing reddish, astringent, and obstructed urination.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* offers Zi Qin San (Zi Qin Powder) for treating children with stagnant heat, reddish and astringent obstructed urination, and unbearable pain in the urinary tract:
